In TLM TwinSoul mentions a Dark Aether that caused his people to become refugees. This is most likely the Aether of Night. In its trunked eponymous novel this Aether seems to allow for the generation and control of "darkness". However "darkness" isn't a tangible material in the way verdant greenery, roseite crystal, ferrite metal, or even light so how can that be generated or controlled. We do however see stuff like Midnight Essence which Brandon has said it also related to Nightmares and further relates that to the black smoke of Nightblood. What if generating and controlling this substance is the power that has been granted to the Sorceress of the Midnight Sea?

Essence, also known as vliya, which translates to "blue fire", was the life force of all living beings. During the final years of the Age of Division, the Skeksis began draining Gelfling of their essence in order to attain immortality, an act which resulted in the spread of the Darkening and the collapse of the Alliance of the Crystal. When the Gelfling were largely exterminated during the Garthim War, the Podlings became the new targets for essence extraction.

When extracted, Gelfling essence manifested itself in a glowing whitish-pink liquid. When a Gelfling died, its essence would return to Thra, thus restoring the planet's balance and preventing the spread of the Darkening.[1] Full draining resulted in the victim evaporating in an explosion of light,[2] while partial draining caused subjects to visibly age and lose all higher mental functions, thus rendering them susceptible to suggestion.[3]

Gelfling essence had the effect of temporarily rejuvenating the Skeksis when consumed, restoring their strength[2] and healing their infirmities.[4] It also had an intoxicating effect when imbibed in large quantities, causing the Skeksis to audibly slur their speech, lose inhibition and act jovially.[5] Podling essence was notably poorer in quality, lacking the glow characteristic of Gelfling essence, and restoring vigor for only a few seconds.[3]

During the mid to late Age of Division, skekGra and urGoh, in an attempt to weaponize the Shard of the Division, forged the Dual Glaive, a weapon with the ability to drain its victims of essence. Ordon used it to attain victory during the First Battle of Stone-in-the-Wood, but hid it away after learning of its life-draining properties, fearing its misuse.[6]

30 trine later, skekTek, while attempting to force the Crystal to relinquish its life-giving properties, accidentally reversed its magnetostatic field, causing it to partially drain him of his essence. Seeing an opportunity to cheat death, skekSil suggested harvesting the essence of Gelfling, as they were the beings closest to Thra, and thus richest in the substance.[2]

After having coerced skekTek into revealing the number of Gelfling needed to keep the Skeksis alive indefinitely, skekSo demanded an annual tribute of seven Gelfling from each Gelfling Clan, concocting a fabricated war against the Arathim as a pretext for their enrollment and subsequent disappearance.[7] The Skeksis were, however, unable to maintain the pretense, as their actions were causing the Darkening to spread faster, and news of their betrayal had been spread by Rian and Aughra. The Skeksis then accelerated their essence draining, starting with the Castle Guards and the Stonewood rebels.[4]

After the Garthim War, with the Gelfling largely exterminated, Podlings became the new targets of essence extraction. Due to the poor quality of Podling essence and the need for only partial draining in order to maintain a staff of slaves, skekSo decreed that essence consumption was the sole prerogative of the Emperor, a privilege later inherited by his successor skekUng.[3]

Light in this instance is being manipulated, being parted, for Daisy and Gatsby. Personifying light renders it susceptible to human control, and Gatsby seizes this idea in his interactions with light. He has an incessant need to be in control of everything he can, even that which is far beyond his scope as a human being. The darkness being parted and moved out of the way for Daisy and Gatsby to exist in a bright, sunlit state, even temporarily, reflects the warmth and contentedness that isolation from darkness can bring.

Transfer essence, also known as essence transfer or transfer life, was a radical dark side Force power used to transfer a person's consciousness into another body, or in some cases an inanimate object. Ancient Sith Lords and other powerful darksiders used this technique to cheat death again and again, haunting their tombs and possessing those who stumbled across their sarcophagi in order to continue their reign of terror. In more recent eras, masters of this dark side art had used advanced cloning technology to assure their immortality.

The Sith Emperor Vitiate was one of history's most powerful practitioners of this art. Not only did he reign for over 1000 years using a multitude of different bodies he called Emperor's Voice, he also imparted some of his essence into several hundred, maybe thousand individuals he called his Children of the Emperor. His skill in this power was so great that he could continuously exist without a host without succumbing to chaos or madness, could inhabit a host's mind without displacing the original personality for extended periods of time, and even maintain complete control over several thousand bodies at once.[9] Also unlike Sidious, Vitiate seems to have been able to limit the amount of premature degeneration which would usually be caused by powerful dark side energy, to the point where his last known body seems to have aged at the same rate as an ordinary human with little to no dark side degeneration. This might have been caused by Vitiate using the bodies of individuals already powerful with the Force, while Sidious used empty clone bodies.

Darth Bane learned this power after acquiring Darth Andeddu's holocron. The gatekeeper of the holocron refused to teach this power to Darth Bane, so Bane decided to rip the information out of the holocron, absorbing it directly into his mind. He later attempted to transfer his essence into his apprentice, Darth Zannah, during their final duel,[1] but her willpower was strong enough to repel the invasion, thus proving her worth to carry on Darth Bane's legacy. However, some of Darth Bane's consciousness still lingered within Zannah.[13]

Darth Plagueis was aware of the concept of transfer essence. However, he deliberately avoided using it, as he intended to maintain his own body in complete immortality. Unfortunately for Plagueis, he ultimately never discovered a way to cheat death before his assassination at Darth Sidious' hands in 32 BBY.[14]

The Hutt crime lord Durga Besadii Tai claimed to know transfer essence and implied that he'll use it on Lemelisk should he fail on the Darksaber. However, Lemelisk wasn't sure if this was true, or even if he was skilled at it to Palpatine's level, fearing that the result will be botched.

Perhaps the most unusual examples of this technique in practice occurred in 18 BBY, and again in 12 ABY, when Jedi Knight Callista Ming made use of the power to transfer her soul into the mainframe of the Imperial battlestation Eye of Palpatine. She was able to "inhabit" the gunnery computer of the dreadnought for some three decades before swapping her essence with the willing Cray Mingla, although this came at the cost of her ability to use the light side of the Force.[19]

The series is written by Daisuke Aizawa and illustrated by Tzai. It began serialization online in May 2018 on the user-generated novel publishing website Shsetsuka ni Nar. It was acquired by Enterbrain in November 2018, who have published six volumes. Yen Press licensed the series for English publication.[4]

An anime television series adaptation was announced on the fourth volume of the light novel on February 26, 2021.[3] The series is produced by Nexus and directed by Kazuya Nakanishi, with scripts written by Kanichi Katou, character designs by Makoto Iino, and music composed by Kenichiro Suehiro.[46] It aired from October 5, 2022, to February 15, 2023, on AT-X and other networks.[47][48] The opening theme song is "Highest" by OxT,[49] while the ending theme song is "Darling in the Night" by Asami Seto, Inori Minase, Suzuko Mimori, Fairouz Ai, Hisako Kanemoto, Ayaka Asai, and Reina Kond.[50]

They are interrupted by skekSil, who reveals the prophecy was the reason for the Gelfling genocide while trying to trick them into coming with him to the castle. But the Gelflings run off and reach the castle on Landstriders, intercepting the Garthim that attacked Kira's village. While trying to free the captured Podlings, Kira, Jen, and Fizzgig descend to the Castle's dry moat (revealing Kira has wings) and use the catacombs to gain access. But they are intercepted by skekSil, who attempts to drag them to the other Skeksis when they refuse him further. Jen stabs skekSil's hand with the Shard in defiance (which leads to his Mystic counterpart, urSol the Chanter, to receive a similar wound on his). SkekSil, in a fit of rage, buries Jen in a cave-in and takes Kira. Reinstated as Chamberlain, skekSil gives Kira to skekTek the Scientist; she is to be drained of her life essence for the Skeksis to drink and regain their youth. Aughra, imprisoned in the Scientist's laboratory, tells Kira to call the captive animals for help; they break free in response and free Kira while causing skekTek to fall down the crystal shaft to his death. At that moment, skekTek's Mystic counterpart urTih the Alchemist vanishes in a burst of flame. Aughra frees herself soon after Kira leaves and before Jen arrives.

The three suns begin to align as the Gelflings reunite at the Crystal Chamber and the Skeksis gather for the ritual that will grant them immortality. When they are discovered and the Garthim attack, Jen leaps onto the Crystal but drops the Shard. Kira takes it after Fizzgig is thrown down the shaft by skekUng, but is saved by Aughra shortly after. Kira throws the Shard back to Jen and is fatally stabbed by skekZok the High Priest. The heartbroken Jen plunges the Shard into the Dark Crystal, fulfilling the prophecy. The Garthim disintegrate and the Podling slaves regain their essence while the dark stone covering the Castle crumbles away to reveal a crystalline structure. The urRu arrive and use the Crystal to merge themselves and the Skeksis into the beings they once were: the angelic urSkeks. UngIm, the urSkeks' leader, explains to Jen they had mistakenly shattered the Crystal a thousand years ago; doing so split them into two races, thus decimating Thra. Jen's courage and Kira's sacrifice have restored them. The urSkeks revive Kira in gratitude and then ascend to a higher level of existence, leaving the Crystal of Truth to Jen and Kira on the now-rejuvenated Thra. 006ab0faaa
