Puga, a first-generation Mexican-American, lived among a large family in a house as a child. To make the cartoon feel authentic, he shared his experience growing up in East Los Angeles and how his home was always crowded with family and parties. Nickelodeon executives bought in.

Puga wanted to get more Latino artists involved, however. So, he reached out to syndicated cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, who was a consulting producer on the Oscar-winning 2017 animated Disney/Pixar feature Coco.

The Ren & Stimpy Show was the quintessential alternative cartoon. The humor was adult; the animation and voices were strange and anxiety-inducing; the themes ranged from neurotic to shocking; the episode "Man's Best Friend" is famously controversial. Shows like Ren & Stimpy prove that Nickelodeon wasn't afraid to push the envelope and try new things. Its impact was so profound that it's hard to believe it only lasted three seasons.

Here's shouty chef Gordon Ramsay in an ad for Nickelodeon's math-centric toddler cartoon Team Umizoomi, getting mad about patterns. The patterns in a strawberry shortcake, to be precise. No f-bombs are dropped, obviously, but Ramsay does get mad enough to make the Team think long and hard about the job he offers them. Spoiler: the shortcake passes the Ramsay taste test in the end, and some poor pastry chef has to deal with the fact that tiny preschool-aged cartoons can do his job better than him. Go, watch:

Since then Nickelodeon has made cartoon hits as well as some off-kilter toons like The Fairly Odd Parents, Invader Zim, and Ren and Stimpy. Nick is also the creator of some cutting edge programming like Avatar: The Last Airbender and its current follow up, Avatar: Legend of Korra.

Nickelodeon might not make the live action shows that some of us grew up loving anymore, but they certainly have made up for it by producing some of the best cartoons around. Vote for your favorite old and new Nickelodeon cartoons here on this Nickelodeon shows list! And if you loved these toons, check out our list of the best Nickelodeon movies.
