"Red Right Hand" was a single off the eighth studio album from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, 1994's "Let Love In." Allegedly originating during a jam session for the album, Cave co-wrote the song with Mick Harvey. Its Milton inspiration first comes in the title, which recalls a line from "Paradise Lost" including, in part, "Should intermittent vengeance arm again / His red right hand to plague us?" The phrase is in the chorus of the song too, which Cave growls with his signature dark baritone. Like a poem, every chorus ends a little differently, a variant on what this character is doing with his "red right hand." None of it good.

And it's ominous. Despite or perhaps because of the jangly instrumental with its perky percussion, the lyrics spin a murder narrative about a mysterious figure who seems to offer you everything you want, including love and money, but has a nefarious, hidden purpose. Maybe he's a demon. Maybe he's an assassin. Maybe he's a vengeful god. But his red right hand, crimson as if soaked in blood, a kind of permanent Lady MacBeth, doesn't bode well.

Cave told the New York Times in 2014 he "filled an entire notebook" with place descriptions of the song's setting, "including maps and sketches of prominent buildings, virtually none of which made it into the lyrics." That town with its railroad tracks, mill and viaduct which "looms, / Like a bird of doom" very much recalls the fog-strewn world of "Peaky Blinders" with its docks and liquor warehouses and race horses and seedy industry, a world that Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) walks through with his burdens, trauma and violence. His red right hand holds a gun.

Nobody walks like Roy. Except possibly Tommy Shelby. Even though "Red Right Hand," is used for humorous effect in "Ted Lasso," Roy as Tommy . . . makes sense. Roy is the taciturn character, the most obviously burdened one (although we don't yet know the extent of his burdens . . . room for a spin-off, creators). He also carries the weight of family responsibility, like Tommy, caring for his niece seriously and often. He's the protector. He's sometimes the enforcer. If anyone in the show has a red right hand, it's Roy.

"Red Right Hand" is timeless. Time will tell if "Ted Lasso" as a show is, but some of its characters, like Roy, are etched in our consciousness. He's so distinctively himself, we can't help but try to compare him, to look for his ilk. He's the Tommy Shelby of soccer. He's the sporty Spike. He's the "tall handsome man. / In a dusty black coat with a red right hand."

In the story a typically Seuss wide-eyed young boy, who has wandered "past the square, past the bridge, past the mills, past the stacks", encounters the benign-looking "tall handsome man in a dusty black coat, with a red right hand".

After being wrapped in his arms and having rekindled "all the dreams it took you a lifetime to destroy" by the stranger, the boy finds things getting a little trickier, as we see the red right hand disappear into his body.

And lest you think to yourself "I do not like this Sam I Am", worrying about scaring the young 'uns, the song/illustration finishes on an enigmatic rather than terrifying note as the tall handsome man watches a bright city in the distance where "they're whispering his name, through this disappearing land/But hidden in his coat is a red right hand".

Milton wrote:"Chained on the burning lake? That sure was worse. What if the breath that kindled those grim fires,Awaked, should blow them into sevenfold rage,And plunge us in the flames; or from aboveShould intermitted vengeance arm againHis red right hand to plague us? What if allHer stores were opened, and this firmamentOf Hell should spout her cataracts of fire,Impendent horrors, threatening hideous fall"

I always wondered if Nick Cave is a Stephwn King fan, because this song is a perfect description of Randall Flagg in The Stand. Everything about it is so perfect for that character, especially the lines 'On the gathering storm comes a tal handsome man in a dusty black coat with a red right hand.'

red right hand means he has killed people. red as in blood. I think they are talking about a government man. A shady unknown man that has done bad things involved with the government, such as war, illegal testing, corruption, and such. they are talking about uncle sam / the government. / the unknown and faceless government agent.

he will comfort you, that can represent the way they may give you a job and say you are protecting people, and it is in the interest of the nation, while in reality you are doing shady things. stacks of green paper in his red right hand, well that's obvious, the government has money to spend, and they have power and are corrupt.

this song was used in the x files tv series. In the show, they show shady government figures, like the cigarette smoking man, skinner, and others, that are involved with corrupt plots and cover ups. Some of them are murderers, aka "red right hand" (in my opinion, I think that is what the show and song is driving at)

i think john andrew philot is more or less right except that his explanation is about as cryptic as the song.the man with the red right hand is a broad metaphor for something/someone which can make you feel better but not actually make you better. perhaps something which tricks your body or your mind into feeling more at ease, drugs for example or perhaps a fashion label. things you have been convinced to like by other people and those people (the ones with the red right hands) make "stacks of green paper" out of your addiction.

What if the breath that kindled those grim fires,Awaked, should blow them into sevenfold rage,And plunge us in the flames; or from aboveShould intermitted vengeance arm againHis red right hand to plague us?

So Belial in the extract that Nick cave refers to in his song Red Right Hand is attempting to persuade atan that the rebellion against God and the war in heaven is lost and to give up the fight. It is interesting to note that the phrase "Red Right Hand" refers to God and the fear of God's retaliation and not Satan or a lesser demon of hell, which isn't suprising since in religous terms right hand path denotes judeo-christian beliefs and left hand path alternative/satanist views.

thanks for your indepth analysis dressed 2 depress.

i just read an interesting take on the whole story behind the song:

apropos of his serial killers being handsome etc... check out Alvin Thomas' post

have no idea if it's true, but the story definitely sends chills down my spine.

This, to me anyway, points to nothing other than drugs. Coming in through the poorer sections of a city and leaving it's shadow cast on every where it's presence is known. Then, of course, the stacks of money piling up in it's red right hand.

A story of a vacation gone wrong and one ambitious (and dangerous) crook with a deft hand at understanding social media, Influencer pinpoints its critique of social media on the idea of the online persona and how easily we can be manipulated to believe anything accounts will say on the internet. Cassandra Naud takes advantage of this and quickly shifts her initial persona of a chill free spirit into a cunning, vindictive, and selfishly evil leech with frightening ease. ff782bc1db
