Script that will check your operating system resources and settings as well as your running PostgreSQL database and will make recommendations based on actual load. Works on new netdisco installs but will make the best suggestions once the database contains a bigger dataset.

The following is a general guide which works well in most circumstances. It assumes you have a user netdisco on your system, that you want to perform an on-line installation, and have the application run self-contained from within that user's home. There are alternatives: see the Deployment documentation for further details.

Just watching a Pauls Security weekly podcast and one of their guests (Amanda Berlin) was plugging their book, which looks quite good (called Defensive Security Handbook: Best Practices for Securing Infrastructure, co written with Lee Brotherston), and mention two open source products. I've had a quick look at their websites (for Open Audit) http:/ Opens a new window/www.open-audit.org and (for Netdisco) http:/ Opens a new window/netdisco.org

The VM is built on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, there are two shell accounts setup by me, netdisco and disco. The Netdisco 2 install instructions also installed an account called postgres. All passwords are netdisco. The VM is setup to use DHCP, if you are on a network with no DHCP, login on the console, edit /etc/network/interfaces and there is a sample interfaces.static that you can copy over interfaces and edit. Restart the network or VM to activate changes.

pgtune is installed and was run, letting it autodetect the hardware, which is at 2 vCPU and 4gb of ram. If you modify these settings in the virtual machine, it's probably best if you re-run pgtune. See the netdisco2 docs about pgtune.

qtmib supports out of the box a large number of MIBs. We are currently trackingnetdisco MIB archive. A full listof supported devices is here. You can also install private MIBs by dropping them in ~/.config/qtmib/mibs directory.

While there is a package available for install from the Ubuntu repositories (see netdiso-common, netdisco-backend, and netdisco-frontend) it is somewhat outdated. A more recent version can be installed from source on their site.

In a Win2K network, is there a windows cscript/wscript that can be run against my catalyst 3548XL switches that will tell me what PC is connected to which switch port? Either by IP address or by MAC address.

I have not seen one available. I have seen various snmp perl scripts that will pull from arp table's and mac-address-tables. But for this purpose I have not yet seen anything. A good way to map your ports is telnet to the switch, issue the command show mac-address-table int fa0/1 (or whatever port), next telnet to your router and issue the command "show arp | indluce 000a.8acd.0765" (or mac address returned by the previous command). You now have the IP address of the machine, issue the windows command prompt command "nbtstat -a X.X.X.X" and that will give you the machine name and logged on user. Now thats alot of work for many ports to map but you can grab the entire mac table, dump it in excel, pull the arp table, dump it in another excel and start stripping what you dont want. Than run the command. I have SoloarWinds and I dont believe it provides the functionality you want. 006ab0faaa
