Five years ago, my family and I set out on a journey to stretch ourselves. Professionally, it was time to prove to myself (and the industry) that I could build something outside of my comfort zone. Personally, there was value in demonstrating to our kids that you grow the most when you are forced to swim. Fortunately, our family can swim with the best of them and we are better for it. And, by the way, there are worst places to live (and swim) than St. Petersburg, FL!

Our baby girl transitioned to Heaven in 2012 days before her second birthday, due to a very rare heart condition. After losing Ella, her picture started to travel the world with family and friends. Her life was taken way too soon and by traveling all over the world she was experiencing everything she never got the chance to. Before we knew it #ellasjourney took over on social media and on random days we would see Ella in Paris, Dominican Republic, Disney World and the list goes on. It truly was magical to see #Ellasjourney happening. One day she showed up with her cousin at a @selenagomez concert with Selena holding her picture!

This year as the new school year was approaching, I started to think about how much Ella loved to learn and draw with her big brother Milian. The idea of a handwriting book came to mind and how #ellasjourney could continue into the home of children everywhere helping them to learn and write their letters!

Today, our hearts are overwhelmed by the support. Help us continue #ellasjourney around the world and into the homes of children everywhere. A portion of sales will be donated to the Heart Association.

Third, I will continue to develop GiveLiveExplore into the virtual home for my personal platform and professional projects. GiveLiveExplore started as a platform to share my physical journey through Europe. Similarly, it will continue to be a platform to share the continuation of my broader journey: A journey in designing a life of creativity and freedom. A journey to do work that matters and to pursue worthy projects. A journey to create art. To craft masterpieces. To live a legacy. To be a story worth sharing.

By sharing my personal journey, I hope to be an inspiring and comforting voice for others on a similar journey. I hope my story provides others courage to become deliberate journeyers, to care enough to ask questions, and to have the confidence to live with those questions.

One of the lessons Dan and Nancy have learned over the past two years is that a journey with long-term, or terminal illness is very difficult for the caregivers. My life completely changed in 1993 when I took the oath of enlistment and committed to four years of service in the United States Air Force. What began as a way to make a better life for my family turned into an adventure in the Armed Services, guiding me through 30 years of technological advancements and the opportunity to shape the United States Space Force. Throughout this journey, I have been blessed with amazing experiences, a respected education, and life-long friendships that feel more like family. Taking off the uniform after 30 years was challenging, but aligning with the leaders in the VMware Corporate Fellowship Program (CFP) made all the difference in proving to myself that my purpose was still strong.

I understand the process will not be easy. It takes time to get better, but I will enjoy the journey. I love running and everything about it. Now that I have a solid group of guys to train with, my next main goal will be Tokyo 2020.

I started the year asking the risk management community to join me down the Road to Resilience. That journey required us to come together and support one-another to advance our profession. It also empowered us to take the lead to help our organizations and communities be more resilient. I was overwhelmed to see such a positive response.
