I was curious about this release and decided to do the 2 week trial on Funimation since they have the entire series in the new version up already. I have the first digital release on iTunes and compared to this new one on Funimation, I can definitely see the improvement in sharpness (probably baecause it's in HD) and brightness. The sound effects are from the classic TV show that I remember and not that crappy new version they did when the 5.1 mix first came out. But one thing that threw me off is how grainy it is. For a version thats much sharper and brighter, the overall graininess feels like its been added on as a special effect and doesn't seem natural.

I think the review made a good case for the quality of the HD content. As for the source, yeah, Animeigo and Funimation were working from the same HG film stock. And Animeigo's remaster was done decades ago! I agree with the reviewer and think that a lot of the inconsistencies in the Funimation release are just signs of the film's age. So I think Funimation brought their "A" game.

Sounds about right. It's not like Funimation was going to spend a lot of money on digital cleanup for a high-def re-release of a series with an expected sales volume of only a couple thousand copies worldwide. I'm actually kind of surprised they went to the trouble of doing a new transfer from source instead of just upscaling the last DVD release.

I noticed the same things and posted a similar comparison on TFW2005. I have a 110-inch screen with 1080p projector. It's pretty difficult to watch that large with it that grainy. But I do like the 5.1 audio better than the stereo from the SDFM Blue Ray (regardless of sfx etc.)

I have a question, since these new Funimation sets use the "remastered" audio (I'm presuming the one from the Protoculture Collection set from years ago), does this mean that the Funimation sets contain the additional content that the old remastered DVD releases has? Such as the nudity. Well, mostly the nudity. Just want to know if there's anything that I'd need to cover the kids' eyes for

Thanks for chiming in! I appreciate all this great insight from everyone! I think in this situation it was a combination of a lot of things, most importantly the timing. I made the dolls in 2017, just a year after the series aired and YOI fever was still very much alive, so they were most likely monitoring the IP pretty closely (I checked yesterday and there are some dolls on Etsy with a similar naming that are still up for purchase).

Like you said, Funimation was fully within their rights to hit me with the DMCA, it was just frustrating as a small time creator. But, it is what it is, I learned a lot from the experience, and now I can look back on the whole thing and laugh.

Part of the issue usually is that you are profiting from a copyrighted property without a license to do so. Which in turn can be used to argue that you are devaluing said licenses. If you can profit from branded merch without having to pay, why should anyone?

Although profiting from the work is not required to be considered infringement, it does make it easier to claim damages so it tends to annoy holders more. Also as Jon pointed out you did use the copyrighted name when promoting the product which is another no no.

Space opera manga series The Knights of Sidonia, written by Tsutomu Nihei, first appeared serialized in a Japanese magazine beginning in 2009. The series was first made into an anime show in 2014 with a subsequent season in 2015, both airing on Netflix as well as Japanese platforms. The show was officially Netflix's first original anime series and gained a lot of traction from then on, but a new movie is now coming from Funimation.

After delays due to the pandemic, the second film in the franchise, called Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars, is finally here and will be available internationally faster than the anime seasons or the previous film ever were thanks to Funimation. Deadline reports the film currently has a premiere date of September 13th in Canada and the U.S. and brings audiences ten years forward in time from the setting of the last release. Funimation released a short trailer and a poster teasing the film.

The new Knights of Sidonia film will follow the main character and ace pilot Nagate Tanikaze in a final battle to save the spaceship Sidonia (and also humanity's last home) from a threatening and dominating alien species called the Guana. The short trailer from Funimation builds a tragic and intense story around a dangerous fight to keep Sidonia in one piece. Audiences are shown their favorite characters in states of distress while fleets of alien ships surround Sidonia, threatening to advance at any moment. Funimation will also begin streaming both season one and two of the anime series beginning August 3rd, after obtaining the rights from Netflix. e24fc04721
