Consistent with the guidelines outlined in NIST SP 800-63B, authenticators are required to use FIPS 140 validated cryptography. This helps federal agencies meet the requirements of Executive Order (EO) 14028 and healthcare organizations working with Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances (EPCS).

I would like to know the possibility for integrating Google and Microsoft authenticator application for MFA in AUth0. Is it possible? If then it would be great if someone can provide the documentation for the same.

I am using TwoFactorAuth.net to show a QR code for scanning into an authenticator app. This works if I use a name in the "label" parameter. However, if I use an email address as the "label" in creating the QR code, Microsoft Authenticator uses the domain from the email as the Issuer, rather than the provided issuer.

Again, we had a user try to self-change their password in Outlook. They then tried to sign in and sign up for the authenticator app for their phone and afterwards they could not sign into Outlook or create and account because the auto-discovery did not find them at all. We had to change their password in AD and then delete their profile in Windows and re-create it before auto-discovery could find them and let them create a profile in Outlook. We do not want the rest of out users doing this and then we would need to fix them all the same way. Also our users cannot follow directions and they usually ignore them when we do give them out.

Users traveling abroad may experience issues trying to log into their Microsoft account if the account is configured to use text message rather than the authenticator app. These instructions show how to change over to using authenticator.

Important: The first time you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you might receive a prompt asking whether to allow the app to access your camera (iOS) or to allow the app to take pictures and record video (Android). You must select Allow so the authenticator app can access your camera to take a picture of the QR code in the next step.

ITS strongly recommends using the Microsoft Authenticator app as your preferred MFA authenticator, especially with this new security feature. For instructions on making the change, please see How do I switch to using the Authenticator app instead of receiving a phone call? on the ITS Knowledgebase and Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app on the Microsoft support website.

Using an authenticator app for two-factor authentication (2FA) is more secure than SMS messages, but what if you switch phones? Here's how to move your 2FA accounts if you use Microsoft Authenticator.

Make sure you have a copy of the backup codes for each account before you attempt to change your authenticator device. You'll then be able to use those if you experience any issues when trying to recover your accounts.

I figured it out. Add an authenticator extension to your web browser, such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. The extension will let you scan the QR code by dragging a window around it with your mouse. Once you get confirmation that Concur was added, access the extension again and the 6-digit number will show. Type that into the Concur Two Factor Authenticator page, and you should be good to go. Worked for me anyway. Good luck.

If you no longer want to use your authenticator app as a security info method, you can remove it from the Security info page. This works for all authenticator apps, not just the Microsoft Authenticator app. After you delete the app, you have to go into the authenticator app on your mobile device and delete the account.

These measures generally require users to not only enter their password when accessing accounts, but to also complete an additional step such as providing a one-time code that's usually generated via an authenticator app. Microsoft Authenticator originated in 2016 and has since been used to facilitate easier and more secure sign-ins, also providing users with the option to sign into their Microsoft accounts without a passcode.

3. Now set up a method of authentication. The default method is the recommended Microsoft Authenticator application, but you can use another authenticator. To download and install the Microsoft Authenticator application on your phone, click Download now on this screen to send an installation text message to your phone.

Setting up the authenticator will require the Microsoft Authenticator app be installed on your mobile phone or tablet. It can be found in the Apple and Google Play app stores published by the Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft has an app store portal that contains links to the app for both Android and iOS.

After installing the app on your mobile phone or tablet, go to the My Account portal on your computer and sign in with your Western Universal account (username@wwu.edu).

Select Security info on the left to access your existing authentication methods. The methods listed here will be used when you are prompted for MFA. Select + Add method then select Authenticator app then follow the prompts presented to finish setup on your mobile device or tablet. Following setup, you will want to set the authenticator app as your default sign-in method.

A video example from ATUS shows how to configure your account for MFA using the Microsoft Authenticator.

After configuring the app, please complete this opt-in form to enable the policies that will enforce multifactor authentication using the additional methods configured on your account. Without completing the form, MFA will not be enabled on your account.

If you need additional assistance with step by step instructions Microsoft has a support article with included screenshots here or you may reach out to the Help Desk.

There are some situations where an alternative to the Microsoft Authenticator may be useful. The Alternative Authentication Methods knowledgebase article contains a list of additional methods that may be utilized as an authentication method. Some situations where these additional methods may be useful are for cases where using the Microsoft authenticator app online is not possible or practical or providing a backup means of authentication in the event your primary device is lost.

Please note: Before using the Authenticator app, OIT recommends registering a phone number for authentication. If you only use the authenticator app you may be locked out of your account temporarily if you lose or replace your mobile phone.

Your Security info page will now show that the authenticator app is the default sign-in method. Return to this page if you change devices or want to switch back to receiving text or phone calls for sign-in. 006ab0faaa
