A few years ago my church was teaching through the books of Galatians and Philippians and we wanted to help people memorize a number of the verses. We invited the members of the church to contribute original songs and ended up setting about 1/3 of each book to music. They were low-budget projects, but even to this day when I read those verses I hear melodies running through my mind.

It's safe to say that songs bring back memories. In fact there's nothing in the world, perhaps besides photos and videos, that can transport you to memory lane more swiftly than a song. In modern times, we've come to use pieces of music to mark special memories. For instance, when couples first begin dating, they may assign a song to their relationship that symbolizes feelings that their own words can't describe.

This song broke records on the Billboard charts and won a BMI award. Two of the hottest music artists of the 90s, Mariah Carey and the group Boyz II Men, teamed up for an emotional and beautiful song dedicated to the memory of loved ones they'd lost. It perfectly articulates the nostalgia we feel when we look through photos. Through the song, the lead singer recalls memories from his youth and young adult life. Say what you want about Nickelback today, but this song is one of the most memorable songs about memories ever produced.

Long before Kanye became a pop culture icon known for controversy, the young Chicago producer-turned-rapper created one of the most enduring (and endearing) hip-hop records about memories. One of the last tracks on his now-classic debut album, "Family Business" is a trip down memory lane like no other. Kanye talks recounts wonderful, funny, and heart-warming memories about his family, using family gatherings as a common theme throughout the song. Whether you like the public figure of Kanye or not, this brilliantly-produced track is one many people can relate to.

If you listen to Adele's catalog, you'll notice that a lot of her songs are about memories, or a haunting past. Perhaps the soulful songstress is still dealing with emotional wounds from a heartbreak, or maybe looking back on the past is her way of reminding herself where she came from as she skyrockets to superstardom. Whatever the case may be, she is without a doubt one of the best songwriters to poetically explore the complex nature of memories.

Well, just finished the game, and a lil disappointed that so many good songs were left out of the game, and the KH3 worlds just had 1 song for each world. So I hope to god that Square Enix will add these songs.

Curated by Emily Zimmerman, Assistant Director/Assistant Curator, Songs for Ritual and Remembrance will offer a series of programs that aim to cultivate community memory and create space for embodied healing after the prolonged period of illness, stress, and confinement brought on by the pandemic.

Adele gives us a reflective soul ballad, though the singer-songwriter has many songs about memories, I settled on this one as musically it has a real seventies vibe and it is nice to hear something different from her.

The auditory cortex, which processes sound, is located close to the hippocampus and amygdala, brain regions that are responsible for memory and emotions. When we hear a song that we associate with a particular event or time in our lives, the brain connects the music to the memories and emotions associated with that experience. This is why hearing a certain song can trigger vivid memories and feelings from the past, even years after the original event occurred.

The role of left and right temporal lobes in memory for songs (words sung to a tune) was investigated. Patients who had undergone focal cerebral excision for the relief of intractable epilepsy along with normal control subjects were tested in 2 recognition memory tasks. The goal of Experiment 1 was to examine recognition of words and of tunes when they were presented together in an unfamiliar song. In Experiment 2, memory for spoken words and tunes sung without words was independently tested in 2 separate recognition tasks. The results clearly showed (a) a deficit after left temporal lobectomy in recognition of text whether sung to a tune or spoken without musical accompaniment, (b) impaired melody recognition when the tune was sung with new words following left or right temporal lobectomy and (c) impaired melody recognition in the absence of lyrics following right but not left temporal lobectomy. The different role of each temporal lobe in memorizing songs provides evidence for the use of dual memory codes. The verbal code is consistently related to left temporal lobe structures, whereas the melodie code my depend on either or both temporal lobe mechanisms, according to the type of encoding involved.
