Many organizations sponsor annual parties across the country, with Lovingday.org providing an online legal map, courtroom history of anti-miscegenation laws, as well as offering testimonials by and resources for interracial couples. Inspired by Juneteenth (which commemorates the end of slavery in the state of Texas), Loving Day seeks both to commemorate and celebrate the Supreme Court's 1967 ruling, keeping its importance fresh in the minds of a generation which has grown up with interracial relationships being legal, as well as explore issues facing couples currently in interracial relationships. The Loving Day website features information, including court transcripts of the Loving v. Virginia case and of other court cases in which the legality of anti-miscegenation laws was challenged. To celebrate the holiday, people are encouraged to hold parties in which the case and its modern-day legacy are discussed, in smaller settings such as living rooms, backyards, etc., as well as in larger gatherings. Ken Tanabe is credited with forming the idea for Loving Day. He created the idea in 2004 for his senior thesis at Parsons the New School of Design.[8]

In our home we try to play down the holidays as we have so many outside pressures until later in the month. We like to decorate just before Christmas Eve and leave all the special foods until Christmas Day and afterwards. The practical aspect is that we still have school, homework, school projects and we need to get laundry and chores done as well. As they get older, the school pressures with finals, performances, etc. makes December very hectic. If grandparents or extended want to visit or to have you over for a family gathering it becomes a nightmare to schedule so it really is better to leave these until the lull between Christmas and New Year. And for younger children who are excited about receiving presents, the longer you leave putting up the tree the better as their excitement can mean lack of sleep, lack of eating sensibly and grumpiness as a result. Leaving it as late as possible and as short as possible really helps.

The other thing I discovered is that as January rolls round and if everything gets put away without them noticing they don't understand. It is better to at least try to get them to help and at least to see where stuff get stored. Explain that Christmas comes every year and they will be needed again when they are a year older. It is good to point out that they will be a year older, a year advanced in school, have experienced all the fun of other celebrations, birthdays, etc. and summer, and then there will be a "next Christmas".

Mother of 4 - Thanks for reading and commenting. It sounds like you came up with great ways to keep the holiday season enjoyable for you and your family. I like the idea of having the kids help put everything away in January.

Memories serve as constant reminders of loss. Watching others celebrate can be painful and overwhelming. Particularly in the first year after a death, survivors must learn how to develop new holiday rituals and traditions.

The first step in coping with grief at the holidays is to acknowledge that the first holiday season is difficult. You can prepare for it by making specific plans and obtaining the support you need. Remember too, that sometimes anticipation of a holiday can be more difficult than the day itself.

Surround yourself with people who love and support you. Share your plans with family and friends and let them know of changes in holiday routines. Memories can sometimes be a source of comfort to the bereaved, so share them by telling stories and looking at photo albums.

Draw comfort from doing for others. Consider giving a donation or gift in memory of you loved one. Invite a guest who might otherwise be alone for the holidays. Adopt a needy family during the holiday season.

Take care of yourself. Avoid using alcohol to self-medicate your mood. Try to avoid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Physical exercise is often an antidote for depression. Writing in a journal can be a good outlet for your grief. Give yourself permission to buy something frivolous and indulgent, just because. ff782bc1db
