Third-party apps are applications built on the X platform by external developers, and are not owned or operated by X. When you connect a third-party app to your X account, you are granting that app access to use your account. Depending on its permissions, an authorized app may be able to obtain information from and use your account in various ways, such as reading your posts, seeing who you follow, updating your profile, posting posts on your behalf, accessing your Direct Messages, or seeing your email address. The term app was popularized in the early days of smartphones, after Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007 and then launched the App Store in 2008. At the time, the term applied primarily to mobile apps, which were lightweight and focused on a specific purpose or task, such as checking the weather, taking notes, performing calculations or reading the news.

Over the years, the term has grown in scope and is now often used to refer to applications running on any type of device. This trend has been reinforced by major vendors who now use the term routinely to reference software applications. Once you download a budgeting app to your mobile device, tablet or computer, the app helps you track your money. The basic budgeting apps show you how much you earn and organize your expenses into separate categories so that you can see where and how much you spend.

Many budgeting apps offer much more than that, however. The best ones come with other services, such as monitoring your savings, your investments, your debts and/or your credit score. They will offer alerts when you have an upcoming bill due or recommend ways you can save.

You don't need to pay for a budgeting app. There are plenty of free budgeting apps on the market if you don't want to invest in one. Free budgeting apps can, however, have limited features or a bunch of in-app ads.

Budgeting apps typically link to your banking and credit card accounts, automatically tracking your purchases and payments. Many categorize spending into different buckets (transportation, food, entertainment, etc.), so you know where your money is going. A good budgeting app can save you time and energy while helping you to spend smarter and save more.
