Newb trying out sports photography here. Badminton legend Peter Gade played an exhibition match today in Toronto against Tommy Sugiarto and I went and try to take some jump smash pictures. Total newb here but hopefully these pictures won't blind anyone!

Badminton is not an outdoor sport so lightning is always an issue, coupled with lack of skills (of the user, me) and less than stellar glass (Nikkor 24-120 F4) attached to the camera I can only get marginally recognizable shots. C&C welcomed of course and hope to improve later on!

The Jump smash is also very difficult due to the problems of background clutter.If your lucky,you might gat a solid surface,wall or curtain,but the only real help is a darkened arena.Ive found the only way to get some useable images,is to get high and shot down.You obviously loose a little scale but the backgrounds can be better.

Good day, i would like to seek your advice with my badminton smash swing/stroke, i just noticed that my wrist is always bent when i'm about to swing and ends up with the racket facing the sides instead of facing down before the racket behind the back motion unlike most of the players ahead of my level, they all have the same swinging motion and wrist position. I asked these players about my smash and i was told it was indeed powerful but it is mostly flat or reaches behind the doubles service line and if i indeed change it, it can improve my power further. I also tried thinking about my swing and wrist position during friendly games but i lose focus and end up reverting back to the old ways which i find myself comfortable to generate power. As for the jumpsmash, my jump height is apparently high based on their comments andi was told that my right leg does the kick minimally.

I just recently started training to focus on my whole game and our coach also noticed the same problem about my swing/smash, since the training is about improving your overall game, i don't want to rush his program and ask him to go directly into jump smashing part. I will really appreciate any advice, i'll be taking it all and put it into mind, this can help improve my training output as well.
