I started down the south slope towards Mono Pass, only finding a few patches of sand that I could boot ski and similar to the ascent, taking a touch longer than I had hoped. As I neared Mono Pass, I could see the meadow was quite flooded, and I needed to cut a bit to the west to pick up a use trail across the soupy grass to reach the Parker Pass trail heading south. This was the easiest hiking of the day, with a slow and gentle incline up to Parker Pass, followed by a descent of a few hundred feet through alpine meadow and around small lakes on the far side.

At the final switchback I left the trail and hiked directly up slope to the summit of Parker Peak, finding some easy class 2 on much more solid rock than it had looked from below. The views from the top were fantastic to the south with Mount Ritter, Banner, the Minarets and summits around Mammoth Lakes laid out. Dana and Gibbs were stacked on top of eachother to the north, and Koip Peak lay immediately west.

The last push from the saddle to the summit offered a short stretch of class 2-3 scrambling, taking another 30 minutes to cover the distance between the two peaks. As the highest summit of the day, the views were also the best, particularly of Mount Lyell and Maclure to the immediate west, Mount Ritter and Banner Peak to the southwest, and the Conness grouping to the north.

The clouds were turning darker and darker by the minute, and it was genuinely starting to look like it would rain, despite there being no chance in the forecast. So I continued along the ridgeline to the north, looking to drop directly into Helen Lake to avoid needing to go up and over Parker Pass via my ascent route. This was easy enough at first until I hit a steep notch along the Kuna Crest. I had read about this spot in prior trip reports, and knew there was an improbable class 3 gully just to the southwest of the notch proper. I found it easily enough, and scrambled down into the notch, finding cleaner slabs on the opposite side.

Ada West Professional Center (South Meridian)

Located just southwest of the Eagle Road and I-84 exit, the 27,000 square foot building is located by the entrance of Mountain View High School, and near the Majestic movie theater and High Desert Harley Davidson Motorcycles. This south Meridian clinic is closest to Kuna, Nampa, and Boise, ID patients. This location also houses our premier CAP-certified dermatopathology lab and one of our ACMS-fellowship trained Mohs surgeons (Dr. Dan Winchester).

Kuna Peak is the third highest peak in Yosemite National Park, on the park's southeastern border at the junction between the main crest of Sierra Nevada and Kuna Crest, a high spur ridge extending west to massive Mammoth Peak, visible from Tuolumne Meadows. Kuna Peak is the highest point of Kuna Crest, but it is flanked by lesser peaks of almost equal height (Koip Peak, only a mile to the east, is 40 feet lower).

As a result, it is difficult to see Kuna Peak from most vantage points. Understandably Kuna Peak is one of the least known, yet relatively accessible high peaks in Yosemite. The summit of Kuna Peak is a thin ridge bounded by vertical cliffs on north and south sides, but it is easily climbed (class 2) from the east via Koip Peak. The west side of the summit is rated class 3.

Kuna Crest is a popular ski-touring area of moderate difficulty. It is on the main ski-touring route between Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite Valley. The moderate slopes of Kuna Crest and Koip Crest, as well as their high elevation, are ideal for snow accumulation. The large and deep Kuna-Koip glacial bowl north of the summit looks like fantastic ski terrain as well. However, the summit of Kuna Peak is not well known as a climbing destination, summer or winter; you'll find plenty of solitude on this mountain. In addition, the summit views of Mount Lyell group is especially magnificent.

West side: the trailhead on Tioga Pass Road (Highway 120) is signed "Mono Pass Trail", a few miles east of Tuolumne Meadows or west of Tioga Pass (east entrance to Yosemite National Park). Take Mono Pass Trail southward, switch to Parker Pass Trail (right fork) after about two miles. From Parker Pass Trail you can approach the west side of Kuna Peak by taking a branch trail to Spillway Lake and continue upstream cross-country to Helen Lake. Or you can continue south on Parker Pass trail which leaves Yosemite National Park at Parker Pass, approaching Koip Peak and the east side of Kuna Peak.

East side: the trailhead is in Parker Canyon, reached by a dirt road off Highway 158, the June Lake Loop. Take the north intersection of Highway 158 and US Highway 395, proceed west a few miles then turn right for Parker Canyon. Take Parker Pass trail from here until reaching Parker Pass, then follow directions above.

Kuna Peak can be climbed in winter or summer, but in summer the access is shorter. Between October and May Tioga Pass Road is closed for winter, so you will have to cross-country ski from Yosemite Valley or Lee Vining in order to take the west side approach. However, due to the endless talus fields of sharp metamorphic rock, it may be preferable to climb when there is snow cover.
