Sunanda Murali Manohar was keen to film Tamil versions of A. R. Rahman's songs from the Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (1998) as a music album, and discussed making the project with director Praveenkanth, cinematographer Jeeva and choreographer Raju Sundaram.[1] Praveenkanth, reverted to his original name, after being known as Praveen Gandhi in his debut film Ratchagan (1997).[2] He later chose to write a script and screenplay to accompany the songs, carefully deciding on the placement of them in the proposed film. The idea was later backed by Manohar and Rahman, who added two further songs for the film.[3]

Jodi was dubbed in Telugu under the same name later that year.[13] The film was remade into Kannada as Sajni, released in 2007. A Hindi version of Jodi was planned by the director with different songs and small changes in the storyline, but the project never took off.[14]

This book tells the story of Jane and Oliver Jones and their fifteen year old daughter Rebecca. Throughout their marriage, there have been difficult times and over the years the couple have grown further and further apart. Oliver is a marine biologist who studies the songs of humpback whales and Jane and Rebecca almost always have to take second place behind his career. One day though, Jane finally snaps and after a tremendous row she and Rebecca leave. They travel across America guided by letters from Jane's brother Joley until they finally reach the sanctuary of the New England apple orchard where he lives and works. However, life becomes more complicated for both of them on meeting Sam, the owner of the orchard. Jane suddenly starts to experience feelings which have been dormant for years and worry her because she is still married to Oliver. At the same time Oliver is following them on the same journey and as he approaches his destination the novel meets it's very emotional climax.

Disney's original Ariel Jodi Benson was fully supportive of the studio's new live-action update to "The Little Mermaid." In particular, the fact that director Rob Marshall decided to update the lyrics to some of the classic songs such as "Kiss the Girl" to better reflect the times we live in.
