I accidentally deleted a message string from someone, now the phone shows an unopened message. When you open the message app, there are no unopened message showing, but yet, the app icon still shows the unopened message.

I was able to solve it by opening the Messages app so my texts were listed out, then hit "Edit" in the upper left-hand corner, and then selecting the option "read all", which is listed on the lower left-hand corner of the screen. I noticed that one of my messages came up as unread and I opened that message and then closed it, and then exited the Messages app and returned to the phone home screen and the notification for my Messages app was no longer there. Success!

I had this happen twice. Found out how to fix it. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings. It goes back to factory setting. After that, several new voicemail messages (dated days ago) popped up all at once. I opened them and the red badge went away. Apparently there was some WiFi blockage such that incoming voicemail could not get on the phone. Last time it was after I was using an Overseas Access from AT&T, and when I came home, apparently the phone was still stuck in the overseas mode, and the voicemails were waiting out in cyberspace.

I have the message notification showing "1" on my home screen. I went into it hit edit and read all as you said, but the badge app icon is still red and showing "1". Any other ideas that anyone has to get rid of this??? Obviously all my messages have been read anyway. I did delete a few messages that I hadn't read as I knew what they contained. Please help. I'm using an iPhone 6s and iOS 10.3.2.

Give this a try, make sure your badge icon is turned on, send your self a message, leaving the message app open, do a restart by holding the home button and the sleep button until you see the apple logo. The unread message badge should be gone

I have this problem too. It is caused when you delete a group message (may also happen with one on one message, but I haven't seen that yet) and then someone "likes" or reacts to something on that message string. If someone posts something new to that message string, the deleted message string reappears in your messages app and you can click on it and the notification will go away (so no problem in that case); but if someone only "likes" or reacts to something on the deleted message string then you will get a notification but the deleted message does not reappear in your messages app and you can't get rid of the notification icon. In some earlier iOS versions it used to be that if someone "likes" or reacts to something on the deleted message string it would reappear in your messages app, but that feature was removed for some reason a couple of iOS updates ago.

jmlevy52...I think it could be a bug in the latest update (but that's just my guess). It never happened to my iPad or my grandsons iPad mini before the update. I found the fix by accident just by trying different things, I didn't what to go through the headache of restoring it and starting over from scratch. The one thing I may have failed to mention was I deleted all of my messages then... sent myself a message, leaving the app open then a forced restart ..good luck

One way to avoid this problem if it is caused by the situation I explained in my post above (someone on a group message that you deleted reacting (liking etc) to it) is to left-swap on the lock screen notification when you get it and choose "view". This will clear the notification from the messages icon.

My watch does not receive text message notifications all of the sudden. It receives all other notifications, but not texts. I do not think I changed any settings on my watch or my phone to cause this change. Could it be related to the recent iPhone update? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks.

I have tried turning off message notifications on my iPad to see if that would work to send it to my phone but it did not, so I tried resetting network settings (found tip on google) and that did not work either, I also do not get the notifications even when my iPad is shut off. Does anyone know what I do to fix this??

It sounds like you've taken great steps so far! Since you mentioned turning notifications off and on, we'd like to go a step further and check the specific settings for Messages and try adjusting the sound and notification options. The steps below will help:

I've also tried marking all as read and scrolling through all my messages, yet my unread messages still shows 12 on my iPhone 13 Mini iOS 16.2. What fixed is for me was triggering "Hey Siri, read my messages"

Otherwise, the trick is that Siri can read your past unread messages. The counter is shown because, while Siri reads the latest message in all conversations, some unread messages remain inside your conversations.

"Hey Siri, read my unread messages" works in my case however there are still 140 messages to go. There has to be a better way! OK - After Siri reads your message, the ask is always "Do you want to reply to the group?" and the answer is always "No". So as Siri starts reading a message, tap the Siri circle and say "no". Siri starts dictating the next message, tap the Siri circle and say "no". Repeat. This cycle is probably ~3-4 seconds. I'm down to 117.

Non of these solutions worked for me. What did is turning iMessage off then holding power and home to force a restart (will be different on non home button devices) When my iPad restarted, the message count was cleared and iMessage was turned back on. This is on an iPad mini 2 running iOS 12.

This fixed the issue on my iPhone 13 where 22 messages were unread. The issue is likely due to conversation threads where the most recent message is read and the ones before have been left unread. Apple needs to find a fix. If Siri can detect these unread messages, they are known to the iOS and must show up in unread messages. This is a long standing issue continuing over several generations of iOS

The similar issue happened to me on my Mac. There was 1 red notification badge on Messages app on Mac (macOS Ventura 13.5.2), even though there was no unread messages at all. As @ryingg suggested, I told Siri on Mac like "Read my message". Siri started reading a message that I didn't recognize (maybe a junk message?). The red badge disappeared after Siri reading the message. Thank you @ryingg for leaving the answer here!

My Approach: I've devised a more efficient strategy by employing Siri on CarPlay. Leveraging the skip button feature, I managed to handle 500 messages in less than 10 minutes. This new method significantly streamlines the process compared to the conventional approach, enhancing both speed and efficacy.

I looked forever before I found something that actually worked. The only fix I found is to ask Siri "Read me my unread messages" she'll read out all of the lost/hidden messages that are still showing as unread. When she's done it will finally show zero unread messages.

If your iPhone is updated and you're still seeing an incorrect number of badge notifications for Messages on your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Messages, and turn off Badges. Afterwards, restart your iPhone using the steps you posted, and then turn on Badges again.

If the issue persists, let us know if you have any unread messages at all in the Messages app and make sure you've tapped on Filters in blue in the top left corner of the Messages app to ensure 'All Messages' are selected so that you can check for those unread messages.

I just transfers from Android to Apple and took across all my text messages. The Google Pixel had a great feature where it would block spam message and did this very well. Now those spam messages are showing as unread, 155 of them! They are also not visible in my list anywhere, however Siri can find them.

So is my only choice to sit here for a hour or so saying "No" while Siri reads out every spam message I have received for the past 5 years? Surly there is a better way. Or do I just live with 155 unread messages for the next few years...

Only solution that actually works other than deleting all data on the phone. Had to repeat the process a few times and you have to say no when it asks if you want to reply. Excellent solution, Thank you very much. Now my OCD can rest assured there are no more 'unread' messages.

YESS!!! This actually worked! I have been trying to find a solution for this for probably almost a year now!!! A ton of messages got deleted before they were read and I always had 55 notifications. This actually worked! It was a huge pain in the *** to have to tell Siri no each message but well worth it to watch the notifications drop off one by one!!!

My iPhone 4S always showed a notification in banner (that is, the top of the iPhone screen) when a new message/mail came to me. Those notifications can be viewed in any state(Means, Even if I am playing a game or I am seeing some other apps, I can see the notification in the banner if a new message came). 006ab0faaa
