Hotspots are a convenient way to distribute your Internet access across multiple devices, but did you know that you can also use your PC to share your connection? If your device is running Windows 11, you can turn it into a mobile hotspot in a matter of seconds. Learn why laptop hotspots are useful and how you can utilize this setting on your Windows PC.

Some laptops, like the Surface Pro 9, can come with 5G to provide users with Internet access from most anywhere. If your laptop comes with 5G, that connection can be shared with others as well. Sharing your own 5G connection is a good way to ensure that the devices you are connecting are equipped with fast Internet.

Windows 11 makes it easy to share your Internet connection with others. Simply select Start and go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot.

This program is made possible by the Emergency Connectivity Fund Program. If eligible, students, school staff and library patrons, can participate in the program. Please visit one of the participating locations to borrow a laptop and hotspot while supplies last.

Students who have a hotspot or laptop checked out and are enrolled for in at least one class during the upcoming semester can fill out our HLLP Device Renewal Form and can keep their devices and continue using them during that semester.

In addition to the computer labs that students can use during building hours and the federal internet/computer discount programs, NWTC also has a collection of 8-week checkout laptops and some hotspots to assist NWTC program students who:

Program Students - If you meet the requirements above and require a laptop or laptop/hotspot combination, go to the Resources section of the My.NWTC Student Portal to complete the Laptop Application Form (GED/HSED/ELL students use a different form, see below).

Upon submission, your application will be reviewed for eligibility and holds. While you will receive an email confirmation right away, DO NOT come to pick up until you have been told that you have been approved for a laptop and there is one available for you at the location you selected (around 2 weeks before classes start).

GED/HSED/ELL Students - You will receive a link to your laptop application form from the Adult Basic Education staff when you enroll for classes or from your instructor if continuing classes. While you will receive an email confirmation right away, DO NOT come to pick up until you have been told that you have been approved for a laptop and there is one available for you at the location you selected.

Applications are reviewed in the order they are received. Approved students are added to a waitlist once all laptops in the collection have been checked out. Waitlist students are contacted as laptops are returned by other students.

Green Bay Pick Up - Once contacted for pick up, visit the Library during our hours by driving to 2740 W Mason St and parking in Lot E or F. Walk down the path, under the skywalk, and over the courtyard to door #5. See our map. Come prepared to login to the laptop while on campus (using your NWTC ID number and password). Librarians will teach you how to connect to the College's resources remotely.

8-Week Laptops are due back after the session ends but can be renewed in August, December, and March if you are still taking classes. All laptops will need to be returned in May after the school year ends during our hours. Please reply promptly to emails and texts about renewing or returning. All laptops must be returned by their due date to avoid being charged a daily late fee ($3 per item) as well as the replacement fee ($800 for laptops, $200 for hotspots, and $1500 for Macs).

Students who have been denied a laptop due to previous billing, damages, or financial/conduct holds on their account may appeal the decision after clearing current holds and meeting with the Manager of the Library. During the appeal process, they will be asked to meet with the dean of their program to discuss the situation. If the dean approves an exception and signs the appeal form, the student will need to meet additional conditions to check out a laptop for the next 8-week session.

2. Semester-long checkout of laptops: The library currently has laptops and Chromebooks for semester loan at no cost to students. These are a limited supply and are first-come, first served. Checkout instructions are below.

I recently moved apartments and right now it isn't possible for me to directly connect my PC via Ethernet-cable to my router (and my PC also has no WLAN-adapter), so I was wondering if I could use my Laptop as a sort of hotspot but with a LAN connection to my PC?

since I forgot to mention it: both my Laptop and my PC are running the latest versions of Windows 10 and the network adapter on my laptop is a Broadcom 802.11n with the latest drivers, netsh also says that my adapter is compatible for network sharing (can confirm since I already managed to create a new wireless hotspot)

We are excited to have started distributing technology to our students. At events across campus starting on March 22 students have started to receive individual laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots with the goal of giving them better access to technology and to facilitate their education during their academic careers.

Digital coaches support students in the laptop and hotspot program by providing personalized guidance, troubleshooting, and motivation for an improved online learning experience. If you need any help feel free to reach out to Ana Eugenio: aeugenio@mercy.edu & Gillian Fraser: gfraser@mercy.edu.

Students do get to keep the laptop permanently after graduating from Mercy. The laptop and hotspot are provided for enrolled students to support their studies but become their property once they complete their degree program.

If your provided laptop breaks or becomes damaged, replacement options are available on a limited basis. Students may receive up to 1 additional laptop replacement during their enrollment in the program, depending on the nature of the damage and current availability of equipment.

For minor issues or malfunctions, our IT support staff will attempt repairs so the original laptop can remain in use. In cases of significant damage, students should alert their digital coach or our IT help desk to report the issue.

I'm trying to get Win10 Mobile Hotspot to work, using Lenovo P70 laptop which is ethernet cable connected to a router/modem/internet. I want to share its wired ethernet connection, via the Win10 Mobile Hotspot functionality, so that nearby devices (phones, other laptops, etc.) can connect via WiFi to the P70, sharing the P70's wired ethernet connection to the internet. Same concept as using mobile hotspot functionality on a smart phone, to provide internet via Wifi (to the phone's hotspot functionality) to nearby laptops, tablets., etc.

Everything is set up and configured to work, and it all looks like it's correct. Except that the nearby client phone and laptop do not successfully connect to the P70's Mobile Hotspot SSID. The phone fails to be given an IP address, and the laptop connects (ending up with a bizarre IP) but "no internet access" (no doubt because the IP address is garbage).

The issue may be elsewhere, but I'm just asking here if anybody who's running BitDefender has ever successfully implemented this Win10 Mobile Hotspot functionality, and had client phones and laptops successfully connect via WiFi to the Mobile Hotspot running on the PC running BitDefender. If so, did you have to do anything special in BitDefender to facilitate the success? Firewall exceptions? Anything?

In other words BitDefender Firewall IS doing what it is supposed to do, namely to protect arbitrary client devices from connecting to my "defended" PC's WiFi Hotspot without my knowledge or authorization. Unfortunately, this type of connection requires DHCP (from the hotspot default gateway, i.w. IP 192.168.137.1) because devices like phones and laptops depend on being assigned an IP dynamically when connecting to a "hotspot", rather than connecting through a manually assigned static IP address. That means BitDefender can really do all-or-nothing. Either it PREVENTS/BLOCKS ALL external devices from making use of Hotspot, or it ALLOWS ALL external devices to connect.

So, after adding the following firewall exception rule the problem was 100% solved. Mobile Hotspot now works perfectly, and both my phone and second laptop are now connected through the hotspot provided by the primary laptop which is ethernet cable-connected to the router/internet.

Need more time to look for jobs online? Sharing a device with other family members? Feel like you're missing out on opportunities to use library resources like e-books and other e-content? Check out a laptop and/or a Wi-Fi hotspot from your neighborhood library and connect to the internet on your terms!

An eligible customer may borrow one Chromebook and/or one Wi-Fi hotspot for 21 days. Each device may be renewed for up to two additional 21-day loan periods so long as no one has reserved the device and is waiting.

Hotspot shouldn't cause blue screen as it is only a means of transferring data and isn't running any type of program on your laptop. Sounds like you may have another program installed causing your BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death), or you may need to run a virus scan....too many possibilities here to really pin point what the issue is there, good luck! 006ab0faaa
