But are these spice-studded, brisket-filled creations even kolaches anymore? Is this progression decidedly un-Texan, or indicative of a new kind of Texas? I needed to find out. So I plotted a 375-mile road trip from my hometown of Dallas to Houston, and several cities in between. All in: 20 kolache spots in two days. To layer on the drama, I decided to invite my parents...who both happen to hate kolaches.

Hands down, Chart House is the best river view restaurant in the city. Whether dining outside on the patio or indoors, our seafood restaurant gives gorgeous panoramic views of the waterfront and the sparkling city. Before or after their visit, guests have easy access to famous Old Town sites such as Robert E. Lee's boyhood home, George Washington's Townhouse and Market Square, one of the oldest market places in the whole country.

We announce, with a heavy heart, that our beloved friend, rather, brother from another mother, Prabir Poddar is no more. He died on March 18, 2023 of a massive heart attack in his hometown, Bangalore. He is survived by his loving wife Keka and two sons Aniruddha and Agneeva.

M. N. Ramamurthy joined with my batch in 1966 in Met Engg department and was a cohabitant of H6. A pretty jovial guy, an enthusiastic Bridge player. It is indeed sad to know of his death. May his soul attain 'sadgati'. - Milind Patankar

There were some positive qualities in Linus which I want to highlight. He was conspicuous because of rare qualities I find in human beings. In my interactions with him -- I knew him for many years -- I never saw him displaying malice towards anyone. In this dog-eat-dog world this is rare. He was ambitious. I understand he narrowly missed topping his class in B. Tech. He was given the Institute's Silver Medal in Chemical Engineering which disappointed him and many of his batchmates who expected him to get the President of India's Gold Medal.

Born in a lower middle-class family in Gujarat, he was the youngest of five brothers and a sister. He turned out to be the first amongst his family to graduate in mechanical engineering from IIT, Bombay, 1971 batch. Also, he was specially felicitated by his community in 1981, when he was the first from among them to go abroad, when he was deputed for training at Inventa, Switzerland by GSFC. He dedicatedly served Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals for over 30 years before retiring in 2009 as Addl. General Manager. Prior to GSFC he worked for Nirlon and Petrofils Plant in Vadodara. After retirement, he served as a consultant to several other companies such as Linde, L & T Tech. Services, IBI Chematur, SNC Lavalin and Shiva Engg. Services till June 2022.

At IITB Yogesh was the consummate batchmate. Adventurous and persevering, he was always fun to be around. You could wake him up at 4 am to play soccer or join him every day from 4-6 for a swim as he tried and successfully made the IIT swim team in his junior year. He also helped organize many events at Mood Indigo.

Uday was a strong and proud member of the IIT fraternity and through the years he maintained close ties with his wingmates, batch mates and university chums. He really enjoyed reconnecting with his wingmates at the '68 batch 50th year celebration in Williamsburg, Virginia in 2018. The reunion rekindled many happy memories and was an occasion for all of his wingmates to sit together, with their spouses, reminiscing about their past decades of work careers, family lives, interests and hobbies.

As batchmates, we had several get-togethers in the past, very often led by our batch-leader Dipak Sheth. However, most recent memories are of 15 Feb 2020, when a few of us lucky ones came together and had a gala time with a dinner party when Soman was also present.

The passing of Brian has left a huge void not just in the hearts of his wife Maria and his family, but also his many batch mates all over the world. They will miss his ever-smiling face and friendly disposition, which have left an indelible and unforgettable mark in their lives. Brian truly belonged not just to his family or Hostel 7 or his Civil Engineering class or the Class of 1970, but to the entire community of IITB globally.

Deepak Ghodke, batch of 1994, Mechanical Engineering from H6, passed away from cardiac arrest on January 25, 2020, in the San Francisco Bay area. A fitness enthusiast and an avid runner, swimmer, trekker since his IIT days, Deepak was running the last leg of a half marathon at the time of his sudden and unexpected demise.

After IIT, Deepak completed his Masters from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and had a stellar career in software sales spanning over two decades. He joined i2 technologies in 1996 and was with Hyperion/Oracle for a few years. Over the better part of the last decade, he worked for Tableau, where his career grew to new heights along with the company. He joined Bristlecone in 2019.

Deepak had a unique ability to forge deep long-lasting friendships wherever he went. He was also a passionate follower of the Art of Living. He is survived by his wife Girshmi and his 16-year-old daughter Anura, and fondly remembered by a very large circle of friends and colleagues.

Mr. Navratan Singh Verma, Chemical engineering, 1967 batch, IIT Bombay, expired on 9th March 2019 at the age of 75 years. He was admitted to a hospital in Bulandshahar U.P. on 28th February and expired on 9th March due to acute blood infection in the hospital itself.

Mr. Verma was a very hardworking, honest and dedicated engineer. His work ethic was extraordinary and commendable. Due to this he was not very social and had relatively fewer friends. During our graduate studies at IIT from 1962 to 1967, Mr. Verma, Mr. Radheshyam Goswami and I, Gajraj Singh Sachan, lived in the same hostel no. 6 and also were in the same wing and same floor. We all maintained close cordial contacts in later part of life as well.

Mr. Verma worked for over a decade initially in two chemical companies, first in a sugar mill in Kopargaon in Maharashtra about five years and later in another sugar company in Uttar Pradesh. Subsequently, he started his own consultancy company for setting up very economically viable small chemical plants in and around Delhi area. As for as we recollect, he established many Oxalic Acid manufacturing plants, Antimony Oxide plants, Organic, Oxygenated and Halogenated Solvent plants. He continued with his consultancy work until the end.

Mr. Verma was highly appreciative and had very high regards for Prof. N.R. Kamath. Whilst working in a sugar mill in Maharashtra, he met Prof. Kamath on many occasions to seek his advice on various engineering issues. His work and also his health suffered significantly after passing away of his wife in 2011 and his elder son in an accident in 2015. Now, he is survived by his two other sons and a daughter.

During the last five months, I tried contacting him many times but of no avail. Finally, it was by chance that when I called his number on " The Friendship Day" in August 19, I was told by his cousin that he is no more. We all pray for his soul to rest in peace in eternity

Typical of him, he chose a beautiful Knowledge Tree for this and got it executed. This was his last and memorable contribution to our batch: truly representative of his thirst for knowledge and intellectual search.

Ganesh was a close friend for many but for us few guys including Kalyankrishnan and Deepak Thakur, Dinesh Vadera of 69 batch and Mrudul Mody and NJ Sudarshan, Gaurishanker all from IITB he was a participant, promoter or an instigator of various activities that we did together since late seventies on continuous basis. Classical Music, hikes to Matheran or elsewhere, travelling out of town on various occasions, someone you took for granted as one of the group. There were times we met every day, I remember dissecting the Bofors scam based on daily developments coming on TV or Evening News .

Two more of our IIT Powai batchmates, Mr. Sharad Nandurdikar and S. Pancharatnam (Pancha), and Pancha's brother S. Santosh who went into medicine, had also joined us the same time. While Sharad came from Jalagaon, Pancha and Santosh came from Walchandnagar. But somehow Dilip and I became good friends in a very short time. I learned that his birthday was December 12 and that he was born in 1944. When we recite multiplication tables in Marathi, we say "baram bare chavve chalase (i.e. twelve times twelve are hundred and forty-four)!" I quickly associated "baram bare chavve chalase" with Dilip's birthday. Since then, Dilip has been the only friend of mine, whose birthday I have remembered without fail. I have wished him a happy birthday every year right on time. When the month of December arrives this year, I will surely and sorely miss him.

When we finished high school in 1961 and earned our Secondary School Certificate (SSC) after passing the state-wide examinations conducted by the state of Maharashtra, we had to attend a college for at least one year, since the last grade in most of the Marathi medium high schools in Maharashtra used to be the 11th grade in those days. Dilip came back to Pune and I was delighted to find him once again in my class in the local S.P. College. We had never discussed which college to go to at any time while in high school, and several of our classmates form the high school had chosen to go to Fergusson College, which was generally perceived as a more prestigious local college. Mr. Sadanand Yadwadkar, another IIT batchmate, came from Mumbai and joined us at the S.P. College. All three of us happened to be in the same class, because we had chosen the Science branch and German language as one of two elective courses. Dilip stayed in the S.P. College hostel, which was right by the side of the playground. ff782bc1db
