I have been told by HMRC to revert back to the previous operating system as BASIC PAYE tools is not compatible with the Sonoma at the moment. This looks like a huge mistake on HMRC, clearly they have not tested the software on the new operation system. Luckily I had an old Lap top with windows which I downloaded Basic Paye Tools and was able to use last months back up. If you do not have a back you are screwed. Hope this helps.

I have had the same problem - Basic Paye tools is not supported by Sonoma 14. I am on the verge of having to roll back my Mac to Ventura but really dont want to do this! HMRC just said there were no updates on the horizon and it would probably be next tax year... not very helpful! There must be many people having the same problem.

Don't be embarrassed, Basic Tools has it's place however, I wouldn't consider using it for multi-company payroll regardless of how small the company is. There seems to be little appetite in HMRC to fix issues that crop up from time to time and they are adamant Basic tools will never support auto enrolment. The writing is on the wall IMHO.

BrightPay and Moneysoft are excellent value for money and both provide very comprehensive payroll solutions. BrightPay offers a free 60-day trial, it might be worth considering? Best of luck!

Using The Pensions Regulator's auto enrolment toolkit comes with a number of limitations, risks and restrictions. The process of complying with auto enrolment is difficult enough without further shortcomings. The Pensions Regulator continues to advise employers that without adequate payroll software, Basic PAYE Tools users will be at risk of assessing their workforce incorrectly. Without the right payroll tools in place, Basic PAYE Tools users may not know how to assess their employees or calculate the necessary contributions. The assessment feature of the AE Toolkit is a downloadable spreadsheet and quite a manual process, therefore there is a higher margin for error.

A bit of investigation by us shows that Basic Tools software automatically creates full data backups as zip files when the software is updated and apparently on every system close and these are stored in AppData\Roaming\HMRC\payetools-rti\backups.

Decided to do own nanny PAYE using HMRC basic tools. Am in a muddle already and managed to miscalculate nannies first payment. Think I'm a bit clearer now but in terms of what odd payable to HMRC each month can someone just confirm that it is the income tax and national insurance OK the nannies gross pay, plus employers national insurance?

Also any recommendations for free electronic payslip software?

Thanks

Have you tried brightpay? It's free and super user friendly. If you're stuck you just call them and they help you out. It's approved by hmrc as well and every month sends the relevant info to hmrc. You still need to log on PAYE once a month to pay employers tax and ni though.

There used to be some free software that worked alongside the Basic Tools to produce a payslip but I can't seem to find it.

I did find this (although haven't tried it):

(If it's any good let us know!).

Also, re. paying of PAYE. If your PAYE bill is less than 1,500 per month you can pay quarterly in July, October, January and April. Just be aware though that if you've already made a payment outside of one of the quarters, your account is automatically flagged as monthly by HMRC and they'll expect payments each month by 22nd (or 19th if you pay by cheque). You'll need to call them to request it's marked as quarterly if that's the case.

Hope that's helpful. :-)

Unlucky83 - Thanks and no worries, I've realised I don't have to pay employers NI normally due to the number of hours nanny worked. But yes quarterly payments I can do.

ZestClaire - Thank you so much! That payslip tool works perfectly and is really simple! I haven't found any other tools online that work with the HMRC Paye Basic Tools and all the other ones I've looked at you seem to need to subscribe too and pay for, and they were horribly complicated.

Will look into quarterly payments too.

A versatile payroll management software for UK-based SMBs that provides fast, accurate, and fully compliant payroll processes. Apart from that, it has tools for employee engagement and for task automation. Moreover, it ensures that users can find their way around the interface through accessible how-to videos.

From April 2020 the assessment obligation will sit with the business that engages the contractor. Should the contractor be treated as an employee for tax purposes, then the organisation which pays the PSC (the 'fee payer') will be responsible for the tax burden. The fee payer could be an agency; or the end-user business itself where no intermediary other than the PSC exists. As noted above, any tax liability could ultimately fall on the end-user where there is no realistic prospect of recovering it from the agency within a reasonable time. 2351a5e196
