The Hitchhiker follows a middle-aged man taking an impulsive road trip across Australia. In pursuit of the adventure he feels has always eluded him, he decides to pick up a mysterious hitchhiker \u2013 only for things to take a very dangerous turn.

Currently I'm trying to bring back 3 kerbals from the moon. I have an mk1-2 capsule with 3 kerbals, attached to a hitchhiker pod also with 3 kerbals, orbiting earth. I have a large heat shield on the bottom of the hitchhiker pod, the mk16 xl parachute with 2 mk2 radial parachutes on the hitchhiker. The problem is, I cant seem to land. Either my parachutes burn up because I run out of charge and am unable to hold retrograde, or the hitchhiker pod explodes when I land on the ground. My question is, what is the best way to get a hitchhiker pod back to kerbin? Do I need more parachutes? More importantly, how the heck am I supposed to take advantage of the tear drop shape of capsule if I have to attach things to it?

Adams claimed that the title came from a 1971 incident while he was hitchhiking around Europe as a young man with a copy of the Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe book: while lying drunk in a field near Innsbruck with a copy of the book and looking up at the stars, he thought it would be a good idea for someone to write a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy as well. However, he later claimed that he had forgotten the incident itself, and only knew of it because he'd told the story of it so many times. His friends are quoted as saying that Adams mentioned the idea of "hitch-hiking around the galaxy" to them while on holiday in Greece in 1973.[14]

Celebrated on 25 May, Towel Day is a fan-created event in which they carry a towel with them throughout the day, in reference to the importance of towels as a tool of a galactic hitchhiker described in the work. The annual event was started in 2001 two weeks after Adams' death.[89]

Hitchhikers use a variety of signals to indicate they need a ride. Indicators can be physical gestures or displays including written signs.[3] The physical gestures, e.g., hand signals, hitchhikers use differ around the world:

Hitchhiking is a historically common (autonomous) practice worldwide and hence there are very few places in the world where laws exist to restrict it. However, a minority of countries have laws that restrict hitchhiking at certain locations.[5] In the United States, for example, some local governments have laws outlawing hitchhiking, on the basis of drivers' and hitchhikers' safety. In 1946, New Jersey arrested and imprisoned a hitchhiker, leading to intervention by the American Civil Liberties Union.[6] In Canada, several highways have restrictions on hitchhiking, particularly in British Columbia and the 400-series highways in Ontario. In all countries in Europe, it is legal to hitchhike and in some places even encouraged. However, worldwide, even where hitchhiking is permitted, laws forbid hitchhiking where pedestrians are banned, such as the Autobahn (Germany), Autostrade (Italy), motorways (United Kingdom and continental Europe, with the exception of, at least, Lithuania) or interstate highways (United States), although hitchhikers often obtain rides at entrances and truck stops where it is legal at least throughout Europe [7][8] with the exception of Italy.[9]

In recent years, hitchhikers have started efforts to strengthen their community. Examples include the annual Hitchgathering, an event organized by hitchhikers, for hitchhikers, and websites such as hitchwiki and hitchbase, which are platforms for hitchhikers to share tips and provide a way of looking up good hitchhiking spots around the world. While hitchhiking is on the decline,[citation needed] it is still in regular use around the globe.

Two studies on the topic include a 1974 California Highway Patrol study and a 1989 German federal police (Bundeskriminalamt Wiesbaden) study .[16] The California study found that hitchhikers were not disproportionately likely to be victims of crime.[18] The German study concluded that the actual risk is much lower than the publicly perceived risk; the authors did not advise against hitchhiking in general.[19] They found that in some cases there were verbal disputes or inappropriate comments, but physical attacks were very rare.[20]

In Cuba, picking up hitchhikers is mandatory for government vehicles, if passenger space is available. Hitchhiking is encouraged, as Cuba has few cars, and hitchhikers use designated spots. Drivers pick up waiting riders on a first come, first served basis.[23]

Hitchhiking in Poland has a long history and is still popular. It was legalised and formalised in 1957 so hitchhikers could buy booklets including coupons from travel agencies.[26] These coupons were given to drivers who took hitchhikers. By the end of each season drivers who collected the highest number of coupons could exchange them for prizes, and others took part in a lottery. This so-called "Akcja Autostop" was popular till the end of the 1970s, but the sale of the booklet was discontinued in 1995.[27]

Warnings of the potential dangers of picking up hitchhikers were publicized to drivers, who were advised that some hitchhikers would rob drivers and, in some cases, sexually assault or murder them. Other warnings were publicized to the hitchhikers themselves, alerting them to the same types of crimes being carried out by drivers. Still, hitchhiking was part of the American psyche and many people continued to stick out their thumbs, even in states where the practice had been outlawed.[29]

Today, hitchhiking is legal in 44 of the 50 states, provided that the hitchhiker is not standing in the roadway or otherwise hindering the normal flow of traffic. Even in states where hitchhiking is illegal, hitchhikers are rarely ticketed. For example, the Wyoming Highway Patrol approached 524 hitchhikers in 2010, but only eight of them were cited (hitchhiking was subsequently legalized in Wyoming in 2013).[30] Hitchhiking is still in regular practice, but hitchhikers must accept the risks.

The other possibility is that enough heat leaked through the shield via conduction. Even with ablation, the heat shield was probably hotter than the critical temp for the hitchhiker. You could try putting a high heat tolerance part, like a service bay, in between.

Reentry from the Mun with a hitchhiker, a Mk1-2, a 2.5 m heat shield, and some parachutes is barely survivable. Put your periapsis to ~35 km, set navball to surface mode, and tell SAS to hold retrograde. The heat bar on the hitchhiker will probably go red, but it usually won't explode.

One simple solution is to add a heat shield without ablator between the hitchhiker and the actual heat shield. This increases payload mass from ~8.5 tonnes to ~9 tonnes, but otherwise it's very cheap.

I've tried several times this morning to intentionally explode the hitchhiker on reentry. I failed. How ironic is that? One time I even forgot the heat shield and at about 25k the can turned prograde and I still managed to land it. I must be losing my Kerbal touch. I am in sandbox using KSP 1.2.2.

OP had a pilot and six passengers in the craft, which sounds like a Mk1-2 pod in addition to the hitchhiker. Reentry becomes much more deadly, if you double the mass without increasing the cross section.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) studies are increasingly popular among clinicians and researchers as they provide unique insights into brain network connectivity. However, in order to optimize the use of DTI, several technical and methodological aspects must be factored in. These include decisions on: acquisition protocol, artifact handling, data quality control, reconstruction algorithm, and visualization approaches, and quantitative analysis methodology. Furthermore, the researcher and/or clinician also needs to take into account and decide on the most suited software tool(s) for each stage of the DTI analysis pipeline. Herein, we provide a straightforward hitchhiker's guide, covering all of the workflow's major stages. Ultimately, this guide will help newcomers navigate the most critical roadblocks in the analysis and further encourage the use of DTI.

Some people have "hitchhiker's thumbs," which bend backwards with a large angle between the two segments (phalanges). The myth is that there are just two kinds of thumbs, straight thumbs (S) and hitchhiker's thumbs (H), and the trait is controlled by a single gene with two alleles, with the allele for S being dominant. This was proposed by Glass and Kistler (1953) and has been the subject of very little research since then. Hitchhiker's thumb is often used to demonstrate genetics, but neither part of the myth is true: thumbs don't fall into two discrete categories, and the trait is not controlled by a single gene.

I searched the internet for pictures of thumbs (it was easy, because lots of people give the thumbs-up sign when they get their picture taken) and arranged them from straightest to most bent. As you can see, there's a range of thumb angles, from straight to nearly 90 degrees, with no clear division between hitchhiker and non-hitchhiker thumbs.

While there is a genetic influence on thumb angle, thumbs do not divide into two categories, hitchhiker's and non-hitchhiker's. Instead, the thumb angle varies continuously, with most thumbs having intermediate values. You should not use hitchhiker's thumb to demonstrate basic genetics.

A few years ago I went to the USA and bought a small car in Portland, loaded my things and started a three month road trip across the country. My head was filled with stories from people like Krakauer, Bukowski and Kerouac about young intelligent vagabonds looking to go anywhere. I had hitchhiked a lot when I was younger and I felt it was time to repay the favour. I was constantly on the look out for hitchhikers everywhere I went. To my dismay I found almost none. Then one day driving through Arizona on a long haul towards Texas I saw him. He was standing lonely, on the side of the road in the middle of no where. It had just started to rain and I had driven an awkwardly long distance past him before I stopped. I finally got his attention through the rain and he ran up to the car. e24fc04721
