Several years ago, aided and abetted by Literary Twitter, I started gathering poems with joy in mind. It was 2017, and I needed more joy, and so did you. We all still need it. So here is a slightly updated and revised compilation of those poems shared by readers and writers in a very long thread. I\u2019ve linked to some; others you\u2019ll have to hunt down yourself online and in print. Feel free to share your own suggestions in the comments, and we\u2019ll keep this work-in-progress going.

Although the content of the collection is often grim, it is treated with beauty and humor. The poems collected center a poor, queer Southern youth who's struggling to survive; they seek moments of solace.

Authentic voices of human beings experiencing rural poverty are difficult to come by in literature. In Gay Poems for Red States, Willie Carver emerges as such a voice. As a collection, his poems build a world that is economically poor but relationally rich, that can hold darkness and also be beautiful, that is full of hunger and also deliciously bountiful. Gay youth growing up in rural America will recognize themselves here, but this collection is a quintessential American text, good and good for all of us.

Gay Poems for Red States possesses a defiant, resilient voice which resounds loudly above the cacophony of hate and backlash permeating discriminatory legislative decisions. The poems also celebrate a place otherwise associated with oppression, racism, and discrimination, uplifting the healing aspects of a misunderstood natural landscape historically and greedily stripped of its resources. Gay Poems for Red States is immediate and necessary, and it emerges at a critical point in education, society, and publishing.

(This) collection Gay Poems for Red States presents the harsh realities of being a gay man during this time of rising hatred towards LGBTQIA+ teachers across Appalachia and the rest of America. Simultaneously, Carver's poems are an outpouring of love for a place that doesn't love him back. Carver conveys such tenderness for Appalachian culture and the rural communities that raised him.

A hard-hitting collection of relatable poems. Appalachian queer folk will find a home inside this book. It's complicated, sad, hopeful, sentimental, and it whisked me back to my teen years for some quiet healing.

From the heart of the 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, this collection is a heartrending series of poems about what it's like living as queer in a country that increasingly anti-LGBTQ. Every piece is dripping with heart, some tragically so, but even so, every single one is a letter of support to queer people who may be struggling. With this collection, they will know fully that they are not alone.

In this online tool, students can learn about and write diamante poems, which are diamond-shaped poems that use nouns, adjectives, and gerunds to describe either one central topic or two opposing topics (for example, night/day or winter/spring). Examples of both kinds of diamante poems can be viewed online or printed out.

Because diamante poems follow a specific format that uses nouns on the first and last lines, adjectives on the second and fourth lines, and gerunds in the third and fifth lines, this tool has numerous word-study applications. The tool provides definitions of the different parts of speech students use in composing the poems, reinforcing the connection between word study and writing. It also includes prompts to write and revise poems, thus reinforcing elements of the writing process. Students can save their draft diamante poems to revise later, and save and print their finished diamante poems.

Students read an example of allegory, review literary concepts, complete literary elements maps and plot diagrams, create a pictorial allegory, and write diamante poems related to the theme of change.

If you have enjoyed reading Go Poems over the past six years, then this is a book you will most definitely enjoy. Not only does it include ideas for tucking poems into the lessons you already teach, it organizes these ideas, poems, and prompts so that you can engage students creatively and elevate student writing in any genre with a poetry pause as part of the plan.

The Poems of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell were originally published by Aylott & Jones of London, in 1846, at the authors' expense. Unsold copies of the first edition were bought, re-covered and re-released by Smith, Elder, in 1848, with a new title page. The title page, table of contents, and poems of the on-line edition are reproduced from the 1846 edition. Icons have been added to the Table of Contents to identify the author of each poem:

 Anne Bront

 Charlotte Bront

 Emily Bront

Capitalization, spelling, and diacriticals from the original text have been reproduced. The beginning of each page is noted as [Page xx]. Errata which were listed on a frontpage of the original edition are included here on the appropriate pages. Any accompanying notes have been added by Mary Mark Ockerbloom, and are not part of the original text. To see a sample of the original copytext, view this scanned Sample Page. For those not familiar with the Bront sisters' poetry, it should be noted that many of their poems were written in the context of the shared worlds of Gondal and Angria. Other poems were personal and biographical. In selecting and editing their poems for publication, the Bronte sisters deleted and revised references to their imaginary countries. The versions of the poems that were printed, and their titles, differ considerably in some cases from the original manuscript forms.

Winter is a starkly beautiful season. With frosty mornings, bright, crisp days and powdery snow it's easy to see how it has inspired poets throughout history. Here, we've curated a selection of classic and contemporary winter poems from Robert Frost's much-loved poem 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening' to 'In the Bleak Midwinter', the poem by Christina Rossetti on which the Christmas carol is based.

If you feel anxious about reading a long poem or want to keep the service as short as possible, you may wish to choose a short funeral poem which is still a touching tribute to your loved one and the life they have left behind. Here are a few short funeral poems:

Once a week, the PEN Poetry Series publishes work by emerging and established writers from coast to coast. Subscribe to the PEN Poetry Series mailing list and have poems delivered to your e-mail as soon as they are published (no spam, no news, just poems).

I publish these poems, few though they are, because it is not likely that I shall ever be impelled to write much more. I can no longer expect to be revisited by the continuous excitement under which in the early months of 1895 I wrote the greater part of my first book, nor indeed could I well sustain it if it came; and it is best that what I have written should be printed while I am here to see it through the press and control its spelling and punctuation. About a quarter of this matter belongs to the April of the present year, but most of it to dates between 1895 and 1910.

4) Manuscripts may be 15 - 30 pages in length, not including front/back-matter, with any reasonable fonts or font sizes (12 pt, etc.). Don't worry about the formatting. Do not include any identifying information within the manuscript itself, or within the file-name. If any of the poems have been previously published, include an acknowledgments page. A table of contents and page numbering are nice, but optional.

5) Submit your manuscript in a SINGLE file containing all 15 - 30 pages of poetry. (File types: doc, docx, txt, rtf, odt, pdf.) Multiple entries by a single poet are accepted, however each manuscript must be treated as a separate entry, each with an additional $25 fee. Each additional entry will add an extra year to your subscription. Contest entry fees are non-refundable and manuscripts cannot be edited after submission, so please be sure to upload your final versions of the poems.

6) The winners will be announced on April 15, 2024. Unpublished individual poems from the manuscripts may also be offered standard publication in Rattle. Please remember to include an acknowledgments page so that we know which poems have already been published individually.

Selected poems will appear as the Sunday poem at Rattle.com, with occasional extra poems Tuesday or Thursday, which are fed to over 10,000 people via our RSS feed and daily email service. Poets will receive $100 and a complimentary subscription to the print magazine.

Our Summer 2024 issue will be dedicated to the ghazal form. The poems may be any subject or length, but must be ghazals. We no longer publish essays, but always include a contributor notes section, where poets briefly discuss the experience with the form, allowing for a wide array of perspectives to be shared.

You may submit up to four previously uncurated poems (or pages of short poems) at the same time, either in a single file or up to four files. Do not include your name or contact info within the file content. Do not submit more work in this category until we've replied.

Our Fall 2024 issue will be dedicated to poems written in response to prompts. The relationship between music and poetry is self-evident, and we want to explore how music in the air in forms poems on the page. The poems may be any style or subject, but must be written who have been professional musicians at some point in their lives.

Include a contributor's note about your music experience and how it affects your poetry. We no longer publish essays, but always include a contributor notes section, where we ask in this case why you enjoy writing prompt poems. 006ab0faaa
