Playing Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic reminded me just how much I used to love the I Spy books when I was a kid. The last time I had any kind of interaction with a hidden object style game was Clockwork Tales: Of Glass and Ink all the way back in 2016, and while I bemoaned that game being a fairly pathetic attempt at a point-and-click adventure game, I have no issues with hidden object games if they have a clear focus.

I think what I enjoyed the most was the laid-back nature of the game. No clocks, lives, mistakes to concern myself about. It was just finding things at my pace and comfort. The niche of cozy games needs to increase and this is an absolute gem, which is kind of hilarious finding a game about finding things.

The maps themselves offer enough variety between shifting realities and the make-up of the landscapes. The hints are very well hidden, one of them took me nearly half an hour to comb through every pixel to find! I can easily see myself playing this game on my projector and converting it into a family game night with laser pointers.

Hidden Through Time 2: Myths and Magic is coming soon to all the major gaming platforms, with a release date of October 5th, 2023! Will you be playing when it releases? Let us know on social media @mycosmicircus or in The Cosmic Circus Discord!

The sequel to a sleeper hit among the PN crew, Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic, takes one step forward and two steps back. While still a fun hidden object game, it likely needed more time for optimization.

Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic is fun, but some significant issues (at least on Switch) make it fall slightly short of its predecessor. It might be better to grab this one on sale or when DLC arrives (hopefully with a performance patch). Creative types might not want to wait that long.

I love a good cozy game, especially those without combat and a focus on simply belonging in a world, making new friends, and solving puzzles. The games I look forward to most are the ones that inspire me to be inquisitive and creative, and Hidden Through Time 2 is exactly that. I found myself wanting to play this wholesome hidden object outing more and more, getting lost for hours in its different levels and worlds.

The 80s setting was more engaging than I anticipated, as I tend to stay away from reflections of modernity in video games. I was pleasantly surprised though, and slightly amused, to see Marty McFly partying with werewolves in letterman jackets and goblins with makeup all while following the story of a witch in magical high school trying to get a date to the dance.

Each time period has different levels, and as you progress through the game, later levels have more and more items to find in bigger maps. The detail only scales upward, adding more items to interact with and hiding the objects you're looking for in smarter ways. While at times it can feel frustrating, each item possesses a hint that will point you in the right direction. These are vaguely worded clues that either tell you who last had the item or what part of the environment to comb through. Similar to something like the puzzles in Professor Layton or Phoenix Wright.

I often forgot to check what items I was supposed to be looking for and instead spent a good amount of time poking the people who were standing around and petting the animals, specifically the goose purely so I could make him honk the house down. The level of interaction and purpose for each item and character is so engaging, which is only enhanced by the all new Reality Shift mechanic, introduced in the sequel.

I also appreciated that each time you enter a new era, the stages revert back to easy and slowly increase in difficulty as the levels go on. This helps you get used to the items and colour pallets, so it's not too overwhelming once you get to the areas with a lot of items on the screen. I think it was a phenomenal way to avoid the difficulty scaling into a ridiculous amount of clutter!

With how much liberty and relaxation Hidden Through Time exudes, it's very easy to recommend it. If you like hidden object games, there's no reason to not pick this adorable title up! Whilst a bit on the simple side, I've had an enormous amount of fun booting it up to wind down from work.
