A hero shooter is a kind of shooter game which emphasizes "hero" characters that have distinctive abilities and/or weapons that are specific to them. A hero shooter can be a first-person shooter or a third-person shooter.

Hero shooters are a variation of multiplayer first- or third-person shooters, where players form into two or more teams and select from pre-designed "hero" characters that each possess distinctive attributes, skills, weapons, and other passive and active abilities. Hero shooters strongly encourage teamwork between players on a team, guiding players to select effective combinations of hero characters and coordinate the use of hero abilities during a match.[1]

Hero shooters take many of their design elements from older class-based shooter, multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) and fighting games. Some incorporate the role-playing elements from MOBAs, where as a match progresses, the player can opt to buy or improve predefined skills for their selected hero, adapting these to the dynamics of the match. In other hero shooters, players have freedom to change to a new hero at respawn points as to alter team composition to better challenge their opponents.[1]

Because of the focus on heroes as distinctive characters, hero shooters will often feature more narrative elements than traditional team-based shooters, providing backstories for each character and an emphasis on the story and world in which the games are set.[1][2]

The origins of hero shooters can be traced back to early tactical shooters that featured class-based playable characters in multiplayer modes. Games like Battlefield 1942 and Team Fortress Classic featured specific roles that a player could select that would come with their own unique abilities and sometimes specific weapons that were not available to the other classes. While the majority of tactical shooters were the main games that featured some form of class based mechanics, other shooters also featured the same gameplay style and had their own take on the system such as Star Wars: Battlefront[3] & Conker: Live & Reloaded.[4]

Valve's Team Fortress 2 in 2007 created the main framework and inspiration for the subgenre. While Team Fortress 2 featured the same class-based system as its predecessor, each specific class was now its own unique "character," which came with a specific personality and appearance. This made the roles more fleshed out and feel more like a real person rather than just a nameless playable character.[5] As Valve continued to expand the game, the company released additional media, including a line of "Meet the Team" videos that helped to build out each character class and their backstory.[6] These "Meet the Team" videos established the use of cinematic narrative videos used in future hero shooters to introduce new hero characters.[7]

I've always thought there was but I'm unsure now.I define class shooter as a game where you have different characters usually with differing stats, weapons, and characteristics but you don't need to counter pick.Any character can beat any other character you just need to play to your character.Hero shooters are the same thing but accentuated, abilities are possibly included. The big difference is that in hero shooters certain characters can't beat certain other characters promoting team work.Is this the good way to distinguish between class shooters and hero shooters or are they pretty much the same thing and I'm just being OCD?

The hero shooter genre isn't as prestigious as it once was. For a time in the 2010s, hero shooters were some of the most popular games around. Titles like Overwatch and Battleborn created a huge boom in the genre. However, battle royales replaced them as the genre of choice shortly afterward.

Nonetheless, there are still plenty of hero shooter titles available today. Some play very similarly to the genre titan that is Overwatch 2. Others take a different approach. They all retain the core gameplay of character-focused gunplay and ability usage, and all are great ways to spend time.

Most first-person shooters are set in the present day or the future. Paladins: Champions of the Realm instead has a fantasy setting. There is still fantastical technology and firearms. However, the game's aesthetics, world, and characters draw on common fantasy tropes like magic, elves, and goblins.

Paladins is a very straightforward hero shooter. Players fight on teams of five, with each player choosing a different champion. There are 56 available across four roles. Paladins is often compared to Overwatch, with many similar heroes. However, it very much has its own identity, as well as a number of less-similar game modes.

Team Fortress 2 is one of the oldest hero shooters and is still widely played today. It's responsible for codifying a lot of the tropes, gameplay, and genre conventions that hero shooters rely on. Players form two large teams, with each player controlling one of nine different characters.

Unlike many hero shooters, Team Fortress 2 doesn't restrict who can play what. Instead, each character is given its own use and niche to encourage varied team composition. Team Fortress 2 is beloved for its humor, varied gameplay, and vibrant online community. Even years after release, it remains played by many.

Valorant splits the difference between two genres. Players each choose an agent to play as. These agents have their own abilities and ultimates to use against foes. However, characters are less beholden to certain playstyles than many hero shooters. This is because weapons are not predetermined or limited to certain characters.

Most hero shooters focus on player-versus-player combat. They're focused on multiplayer clashes. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 disregards this trend. It's a cooperative shooter set in the iconic Warhammer fantasy setting. Players control heroes of the Empire and other nations, battling against Skaven rat-men and the forces of Chaos.

Players fight their way through campaigns in teams. They have five characters to choose from. Each of these has a number of careers to choose from to alter their playstyle. Vermintide 2 also includes character-building through loot acquired at the end of each match. The game is a good choice for players who want a more cooperative shooter.

Battle royales were quick to replace hero shooters as the most popular shooter genre. Apex Legends combines the gameplay of both genres into a single solid experience. Players form teams of two or three players and choose from 23 unique Legends. These Legends can use any weapon, but they each have their own unique abilities.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III introduces hero shooter elements to the franchise. Black Ops III continues this trend. It gives players the choice of 14 Specialists to play in combat. Only two people on a team can choose the same Specialist. Each Specialist gives a unique weapon or ability the player can use when they fill up their power meter.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III is downplayed compared to many other hero shooters. It does have players control unique characters with their own abilities and personalities. However, much of its gameplay is still focused on boots-on-the-ground gunplay. Specialists are less important than heroes in many games.

Destiny 2 is unusual in that its heroes aren't predefined characters with personalities and unique abilities. Instead, players create their own character and choose their loadout. However, their character is always one of three classes, each of which has a number of subclasses.

Warframe splits the difference between a hero shooter and an MMO game. Players have a huge swathe of space to explore and a great many missions to go along. They do all of this while controlling one of the titular Warframes. These Warframes all have different abilities and roles.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege presents a new angle for the Rainbow Six series. It is still a tactical shooter focused on asymmetric combat between terrorists and counter-terrorists. However, it also lets players choose their Operator before a round. Each Operator comes with their own equipment, gadgets, and abilities.

The Hero Shooter, also known as Character FPS, is a Sub-Genre of First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter games, with MOBA and Fighting Game elements. In this type of game, instead of choosing which weapons to use or finding the weapons, the player can choose one out of multiple characters, or heroes, with different weapons and abilities. For example, one character may be able to Double Jump, while another can heal teammates, and another can build turrets. The characters may also have Ultimate Abilities that can vastly alter the course of battle. This in turn makes the characters more unique and the game defined by the characters rather than the weapons available in the game.

The roots of the hero shooter genre can be traced back as early as the Sega Genesis game Herzog Zwei (1989), the first shooter with MOBA elements. It can also be traced back to class-based shooters like the Battlefield and Team Fortress series, and several games that are now considered to be hero shooters were orignally marketed as class-based shooters. The hero shooter genre also contains elements of arcade fighting games, such as Street Fighter, which are similarly character-centric. The Ur-Example of the hero shooter genre is either Team Fortress (a 1996 Quake mod) or Outtrigger (1999), an arcade hero shooter developed by Sega AM2 and produced by Yu Suzuki. Other early examples of the genre include Team Fortress 2 (2007), Cyber Diver (2009), and Gunslinger Stratos (2012). The most popular hero shooter internationally is Overwatch (2016).

You could start with creating a new ability and a new hero whom you give that ability to. The ability system is very powerful and worth understanding an making use of, for a more in depth understanding have a look at this: GAS

I created this post because I am very concerned that this game has taken a course some time ago that is absolutely contrary to what attracted me to this game, namely it is starting to remind me of a hero shooter, with fantasy weapons, without any regulations, para squads with heavy ass weapons dropping like it was nothing 2351a5e196
