Kim grew up in North Yarmouth and spent much of her childhood where she now lives on Chebeague Island as a ninth-generation islander. Kim has also seen much of the world, having lived in Washington D.C., New York City, Seattle, Providence RI, Pittsburgh PA, Botswana, Senegal, and Paris. She now lives on the island with her husband and their beloved dog, Crosby, in the home that once belonged to her grandparents. She loves island life, traveling, and oil painting in her spare time.

The history of Hamilton Island dates back to Captain Cook who first encountered the Whitsunday Passage. Tourism started to enter the region in the 1920s. Then in the 1970s, Keith Williams, together with his business partner Bryan Byrt purchased the grazing lease on Hamilton Island. He liked the island because for one, he noticed that it had north facing beaches, which was rare for the east coast of Australia. In 1978 Bryan Byrt passed away and instead of using the island for grazing, Keith Williams decided to build a tourist resort.

In 2003 Robert Oatley was cruising his yacht passed Hamilton Island when he noticed the airport being built and he fell in love with the concept and took over ownership from Keith Williams. Robert Oatley passed away in 2016. Since that time the Oatley family has continued to maintain improve Hamilton Island, making it an amazing tropical island holiday destination.

Hamilton Island is about 5 square kilometres, with a total population of some 5000 people, half of these comprise local residents and staff with the other half made up of guests. Atticus Health Hamilton Island is the only medical clinic on the island. Queensland Ambulance Service also have a station on the island and we work together.

Straight off the ferry, we could see why this truly is a world-class destination. The streets are clean, the air fresh, and the quaint marina precinct was bustling with little cafes and shops. There was nothing but the swish of wind as the electric golf buggies the island is famous for came riding past. We decided we HAD to hire one.

As the largest inhabited islands in the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island stretches over 5km, and 75% of the island is national parkland. There are 9 hiking tracks around the island, and 4 distinct points of the island: the marina precinct, the airport, the resort side, and past One Tree Hill, the luxury district, home to the 6-star qualia resort. You can also see the neighbouring Whitsunday Island, home of Whitehaven Beach and a short 25-minute boat ride from the marina!

Since the island is quite spread out, one of the preferred modes of transportation around the island is by golf buggy, but there are also convenient and complimentary shuttle busses, in which you can simply hop on or off at any of the destinations mentioned and more. We opted to take a quick stroll over the hill at Mango Tree Corner, (aptly named, and the main intersection of the driving roads on the island) to one of the two buggy hires on the island.

After a brief tutorial, we were on our way-Ready to explore what Hamilton Island has to offer! First stop, we decided to head up to One Tree Hill, to take in the 360 views of the surrounding islands. Conveniently located at the top is a little bar, complete with all-day happy hour cocktails and light nibbles. The friendly staff told us this place was pumping at sunset, as it has some of the best vantage points in the Whitsundays, and usually live music.

After returning our boards, it was finally time to indulge in some pool time, and the swim-up bar and plentiful sun loungers topped off the perfect afternoon. It was only on our way back to the marina to catch the ferry that we spoke to some other guests who had returned from an ATV tour up in the national parks that we realised there was so much more to experience on this incredible island paradise. We will definitely be back, next time for a couple of nights!

Bommie Deck is the ultimate location for cocktails, which are a paradise island prerequisite. An architectural extension of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club, it appears to levitate over the marina, providing a front-row seat to every sunset. The outdoor bar is open most days from 4pm. e24fc04721
