Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant today. Secretary Austin made clear that U.S. commitment to Israel's security is steadfast and unwavering, and affirmed that the Department of Defense is focused on initiatives that deepen military cooperation. The two leaders discussed the range of Iran-backed threats to regional security and stability and agreed to continue working together to counter these threats.

During their conversation, Secretary Austin underscored the United States' belief that broad consensus through political dialogue, especially in the coming weeks and months, are critical elements of a resilient democracy. He also expressed concern regarding the urgent need for Israeli and Palestinian leaders to take meaningful steps to ensure stability in the West Bank. Secretary Austin called for Palestinian leaders to condemn terrorism and take active steps to prevent violence. He urged Minister Gallant to address extremist settler violence against Palestinian civilians and continue the Israeli Ministry of Defense's efforts to improve economic opportunities for Palestinians in the West Bank.

At the inaugural Commonwealth Finance Ministers High-Level Working Group Meeting on the margins of the 2023 World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings, finance ministers discussed national fiscal policies, measures for financial sustainability, eligibility criteria for development finance and potential reforms required for a more equitable financial architecture.

In their call, ministers stressed that any reforms must increase funding and consider the realities of vulnerability when allocating support to help vulnerable countries invest in resilience and achieve sustainable development.

The working group meeting also gave ministers an opportunity to focus on the urgent need to influence the global financial architecture, which is still underpinned by fiscal rules and conditions deemed unfit to meet the needs of the current global economic landscape and overlapping challenges.

Yes. The ability to request a dissolution of Parliament and a new election lies with the prime minister. This means that a prime minister can effectively announce an election at a time of his or her choosing.

Between 2011 and 2022 prime ministers would have had to pass a vote in the House of Commons to call an early election under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act (FTPA) 2011. This has now been repealed and the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act (DaCoP) 2022 which has returned the ability to call elections to Royal Prerogative. This is how elections were called before 2011.

The power to call an election before January 2025 lies with the prime minister. This means that the public, and opposition parties, can only try and put pressure on the prime minister if they believe an election should be held sooner.

If a majority of MPs wanted an earlier election, they could seize control of the parliamentary agenda and make it clear that they believed an election was needed, for instance, through passing legislation that there be an election on a particular date. Otherwise, the only way an election could be forced sooner by MPs would be if they held a vote of no confidence in the government. If the government lost that, it would have to either resign in favour of the opposition or call an election. As the government still has a sizeable majority, both options would require a section of Conservative MPs either voting for an election or no confidence in their own government.

The Act reverses the Fixed-term Parliaments Act (FTPA). Elections will still have to be held no more than five years apart, but the timing of elections can be otherwise determined by the prime minister. The Conservatives committed to repealing the FTPA in their 2019 manifesto, arguing that the FTPA was responsible for the parliamentary deadlock that happened over Brexit in 2019.

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation yesterday evening with the Prime Minister of Tunisia, Najla Bouden Romdhane. During the call, the long-standing friendship between the two nations was highlighted.

The Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Senator Pippa Hackett, has today announced a public call for innovative projects which support and highlight the environmental, social and economic benefits of forestry, forests and timber products. Funding will be allocated by the department by means of an open competition under the Forestry Promotion Projects Support Fund.

Recently, you opposed the idea of boycotting the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. I, too, oppose boycotts because they only hurt athletes who have spent their lives training to represent their country on the international stage, but that does not mean nothing should be done. Governments and international organizations have the ability and responsibility to address human rights concerns and call on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to change direction, and move the 2022 Olympics Games out of Beijing.

I have introduced legislation in the United States Senate calling on the IOC to move the 2022 games out of Beijing unless Communist China demonstrates significant progress in securing and protecting fundamental human rights. The IOC has the time and ability to move the games to a country that truly respects human rights, and I urge you to join me in this effort and urge the IOC to take immediate action.

I'm happy to be back at SLU as the choir director for SLU's student Mass Choir. You'll most often find me in College Church, conducting in the choir area (or these days at my computer, mixing recordings). I work with a team of incredible people from Campus Ministry and beyond to help students, alumni, and the whole SLU community to minister to each other through music and find spiritual meaning in song. I live with my husband and our two cats, and when I am not doing music things, I enjoy gardening, knitting, hiking and reading.

As I begin my fourth year as a campus minister, I am looking forward to walking with students as they learn and grow throughout their college experience! I coordinate the Journey Spiritual Life Communities program. Prior to arriving at SLU, I served with Maryknoll Lay Missioners in El Salvador and Brazil and worked at Amate House in Chicago and at the University of Dayton. A native Kansan, I get excited about new library books, live music and yoga. I am a candidate in the M.S.W. program at SLU, and I live in South City with my two cats, Noodle and Boo. The lights of my life are my three nephews. You can find me at my office in Reinert Hall, and I look forward to connecting with you!

I'm overjoyed that this is my ninth year as a SLU campus minister. I'm a native of St. Louis. My responsibilities as campus minister include overseeing ministry to SLU's bereaved students; serving as the residence hall campus minister for Griesedieck Complex; directing retreats; mentoring students; helping with our Journey community group program; co-leading our student delegation to the annual Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice; overseeing our department's graduate intern program; leading/accompanying a group of students every spring to visit the L'Arche community in Mobile, Alabama. I also serve as an advisor to SLU's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, an international coed collegiate service organization committed to helping students develop into servant-minded leaders in their communities.

Prior to SLU, I worked as a hospital chaplain and as a newspaper journalist. I enjoy mentoring and accompanying college students through life, faith and solidarity. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, hiking, spending time with dear friends, exercising, taking in concerts, road trips, volunteering, and most importantly, quality time with my beloved family. e24fc04721
