GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games were once working on a zombie survival game set on a Scottish island, which sounds like a mixture of GTA: Vice City and legendary Arma mod DayZ. That's according to former technical director Obbe Vermeij, who joined Rockstar North in 1995 back when it was called DMA Design, and left in 2009 following the release of GTA 4. In the run-up to the GTA 6 trailer reveal next month, he's started blogging about the development of several Rockstar games, from GTA through grotty snuff film simulator Manhunt to cancelled projects such as the zombie title and Cold War stealth fest Agent.

Discussing these latter "distractions", Vermeij noted that "[a]fter Vice City [in 2002] there was a sense within North that it would be nice to do something else. Something that wasn't GTA. Some of the artists wanted to do a zombie survival game. Programmers like fantasy. Artists like zombies. Not sure why that is."

Rockstar decided to pursue the zombie game concept for a bit, with the working title "Z". Unless there's another one I'm forgetting, it would have been Rockstar North's first and only game set in the developer's native Scotland. "The idea was to use the Vice code as is," Vermeij explained. "The game was to take place on a windswept foggy Scottish island. The player would be under constant attack from zombies. The player would need to use vehicles to get around but vehicles would need fuel. Acquiring the fuel would be a big part of the game."

Zombies, of course, would eventually grace a Rockstar Games release in the shape of Red Dead Redemption's Undead Nightmare DLC. Rockstar also did a zombie game survival mode for Red Dead Online in 2020, which I gather wasn't quite the Undead Nightmare sequel people were hoping for.

"It was a James Bond game and Jimmy is the Scottish version of James," Vermeij went on. "The game was to be set in the 70s, be more linear than GTA with a number of locations. There was a French Mediterranean city, A Swiss ski resort, Cairo and at the end there would be a big shootout with lasers in space."

Victor arrives at Lance's apartment. Just as Lance enters with a new suit. Vic calls Jerry Martinez and thanks him for the drug shipment he stole from him but Martinez tells him the coke belonged to the Mendez brothers and that they are going to kill anyone involved in it including Martinez himself. Vic angrily starts shouting at Lance just as Lance finds out that he's got a buyer. The two drive over to the North Point Mall in Vice Point and Spitz (the buyer) needs a stuntman to finish a stunt movie for him inside the mall. Vic decides to do the stunts while Spitz and Lance do their drug trade. He first kills all the zombies with a shotgun and then in the second scene the zombies are invading a recording store where Vic kills them all with a katana. Once finished Vic and Lance both drive over to Lance's apartment in Ocean Beach to pickup the rest of the drugs but upon arriving they find out that their mother has taken all the drugs.

After the mission, the news will play on the radio explaining about a new zombie movie, Mall Munchers, being shot at the North Point Mall. Towards the end of the newscast, the anchorwoman will say that the flow of city life has been affected in Vice City during the filming. This proves the fact that the zombie actors were "actually killed" by Vic in the two shooting spots during the mission.

According to the New York Post, reports of New York raccoons with the distemper virus first started popping up back in July, but since then, it seems like the zombie raccoon epidemic has only been spreading. Now, the corpses of almost 200 raccoons believed to have been affected by the distemper virus have been recovered in parks across the city, from Central Park to Brooklyn's Prospect Park to Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx.

The distemper virus is fatal and highly contagious for raccoons and can also spread to dogs and other animals like skunks and ferrets, PetMD reports. It will first make the infected animal confused and sometimes aggressive, causing "attacks of hysteria" and other strange, zombie-like behavior before eventually killing the animal entirely.

Authorities in New York are working to contain the distemper outbreak, according to the Post, collecting the corpses of raccoons that have already succumbed to distemper and trying to round up sick animals before they spread the disease. For now, though, it looks like they haven't been able to get a handle on the spreading problem and zombie raccoons are still on the loose. Just last month, a sick raccoon had to be picked up at Central Park, one of almost 70 the park has seen in recent months.

The myth emerged when a zombie was unintentionally found in Auntie Poulet's Shack during a YouTube video demonstrating a mod that allows the player to access various in-game interiors. In the video, the Zombie was hiding behind a curtain near the picture of Bossou the Three Horned Bull. Later, it was analyzed that the Zombie could be a Voodoo zombie that was brought to life by Auntie Poulet. According to Haitian Voodoo Rituals, the creator of the Zombie, in this case Auntie Poulet, has power over the Zombie itself, so it could be one of the reasons the Zombie is hidden in the shack.

Vermeij, who worked for Rockstar between 1995 - 2009, revealed the development of a GTA 2.5 (to follow the 2D GTA 2) as well as a zombie survival-horror successor-of-sorts to GTA: Vice City, based off of the code of that game.

There is no telling as to what specifically Vermeij's former colleagues found umbrage with, but Vermeij discussed a lot about the development of early GTA games as well as the cancelled Agent PS3 exclusive and the aforementioned zombie project in a post entitled 'Distractions: Agent & Z.'
