The Virginia Board of Education approved the proposed list of textbooks submitted on March 22, 2018. Read Board of Education Agenda Item A (Word) for more information. The approved textbooks on this webpage are correlated to the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning.

This study aimed at identifying the form of the language, which is expressive of the mathematics and mathematics learner in the 8th grade mathematics textbook. The results showed that the mathematics textbook tends to exhibit an absolute, symbolic, mathematics specific image and a negative image of the mathematics learner as just who executes the orders (scribbler), rather than a thinker or engaged in authentic problem solving. Possibly, these two images may explain the difficulties and problems the students encounter while learning mathematics.

This introduction to the series invites students to become confident mathematics enthusiasts by introducing basic facts, explaining the not-so-basic operations that we use in our number system, and modeling excellent solutions.

Our Mathematics Textbooks and Workbook series focuses on building a truly solid foundation of mathematical knowledge and skill, with deep explorations into algebra, geometry, and general logic and problem solving. In addition to the core content, these textbooks place a strong emphasis on communicating mathematics clearly, doing computations efficiently, and using common sense to check if answers and results make sense.

A new version of the third-grade math textbook no longer features images of girls in school uniforms on the cover. Meanwhile, the schoolboys' image has been kept untouched on the cover of the newly-published textbook for the new Iranian academic year.

Nonetheless, Iranian girls have shown extreme interest in math in recent years, especially after their self-exiled compatriot, Maryan Mirzakhani, became the first woman to win Fields Medal, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize for mathematics."

The illustrator of the older version of the math textbook, Nasim Bahari, said in an Instagram post that apparently, since one of the girls on the cover looked as if she were running to hug one of the boys, Iranian authorities decided to remove the girls' images.

A thorough revision of all textbooks in Iran began immediately after the pro-West monarch's downfall and the Islamic Republic's emergence, and attention has intensified on the subjectin recent months.

In a note published in the IRGC-run Tasnim news agency on April 11, Ali Shirazi, an outspoken cleric who supervises Iran's Qods Force, blasted the Iranian authorities for permitting a reference to the UNICEF activities in a fourth-grade textbook.

In a series of tweets last February, Adel Barkam, an expert in educational affairs, also shared that some of the topics related to Russia's historical crimes against Iran were removed from the second volume of the eleventh-grade Persian textbook.

This study, firstly, aimed at investigating the various types of the multiple math representations and transitions among them in the 8th grade math textbook, and secondly, teachers' use of these representations in teaching. The current study employed the content analysis approach to investigate the multiple mathematical representations and transitions among them in 8th Grade Mathematics Textbook. An observation method was used to analyses the teacher practices (n=35 observations), and record the representations and transitions. The results showed that there was an existence of symbol and verbal representations in the textbook and teachers' implementation. Meanwhile, the other three representations (pictures and figures, models and Cutters, and life situations) and the transactions between them were at low rates in the textbook and teachers' implementation.

The most advanced students take a four-year honors sequence that culminates with the Advanced Placement BC Calculus exam as a senior. For those beginning this sequence in the 9th grade, the courses taken are Geometry H, Algebra2/TrigH, Analysis Honors and Advanced Placement BC Calculus.

PAUSD Board Policy allows high school students to challenge courses by examination (BP 6155). This examination is aligned to state-adopted content standards in mathematics taught in the course being challenged. If a student successfully challenges a course, a grade based on their results and units will be added to their transcript with a note indicating that the requirement was met by examination.

All mathematics classes at Gunn use both on-line and hand-held calculators. Students enrolled in Alg2 / TrigA or Alg2 / TrigH (or any higher class in the Advanced or Honors lanes) will need their own graphing calculator. The two most popular models are the TI-84 plus and the TI-Nspire. These calculators are required on the AP Calculus AB and BC exams and it is our job to get the students comfortable with them well ahead of time.

Recent research shows that grading student homework results in lower scores on quizzes and tests. Peer and self-assessment seem to be more effective strategies of correcting homework. Alfie Kohn outlines three consistent effects of letter or number grades: grades tend to reduce students' interest in the learning itself, grades tend to reduce students' preference for challenging tasks, and grades tend to reduce the quality of students' thinking. For this reason, most teachers count homework as an effort or participation grade. In other words, if students try hard and attempt all of the problems they will receive full credit.

As a rule, PAUSD Summer School is only for credit recovery, not for advancement (taking GEO A for rising 10th graders is the one exception). So we'd recommend enriching your students mathematical background by studying problem solving, contest math, or some other topic not offered at Gunn.

During the 2022-2023 school year, FCS will review resources for textbook adoption for Mathematics in Grades K-12. The following resources are to be reviewed by all teachers and the public from March 27, 2023 - May 5, 2023:

This textbook, Counting Rocks!, is the written component of an interactive introduction to combinatorics at the undergradaute level. Throughout the text, we link to videos where we describe the material and provide examples; see the Youtube playlist on the Colorado State University (CSU) Mathematics YouTube channel.

This is an introduction to probability theory, designed for self-study. It covers the same topics as the one-semester introductory courses which I taught at the University of Minnesota, with some extra discussion for reading on your own. The reasons which underlie the rules of probability are emphasized. Probability theory is certainly useful. But how does it feel to study it? Well, like other areas of mathematics, probability theory contains elegant concepts, and it gives you a chance to exercise your ingenuity, which is often fun. But in addition, randomness and probability are part of our experience in the real world, present everywhere and yet still somewhat mysterious. This gives the subject of probability a special interest.

Mathematical modelling plays an increasingly important role in almost any area of life sciences, and this interactive textbook focuses on the areas of population ecology, infectious diseases, immunology and cell dynamics, gene networks and pharmacokinetics. It is aimed at anyone who is interested in learning about how to model biological systems, including undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics students who have not studied mathematical biology before, life-sciences students with an interest in modelling, and post-16 mathematics students interested in university-level material. Some mathematical knowledge is assumed, and the mathematical models used are all in the form of ordinary differential equations.

We recently undertook a study of popular 8th grade math textbooks and concluded that not only do these textbooks not attempt to indoctrinate students in ways relating to critical race theory, they may fall short in teaching them. Overall, the texts lack the multicultural representations that are reflective of the reality of a diverse America.

In our research, we reviewed the math-story content of the 10 top-rated 8th grade mathematics texts in the United States (as ranked by EdReports, a nonprofit that evaluates instructional materials) to determine the attention given to diverse groups of students. The proportional reasoning and linear equations sections of the texts were examined as they embrace skills that are commonly used in real-world activity. In all, we examined 1,041 story problems.

To make textbooks work better for all students, we suggest that the books be reviewed for cultural relevance, and this information should be made publicly available and a part of the textbook-adoption process. Textbook-ranking systems as well as state adoption boards should hold publishers accountable for making changes as society changes and gains understanding of the role culture plays in mathematics learning and instruction.

The lists on this page represent textbooks approved by the North Carolina State Board of Education. In accordance with Senate Bill 359, annually, the Board and the Superintendent or designee shall review student data related to placement and advancement in the mathematics courses offered at District high schools to ensure that ninth-grade students who are qualified to progress in mathematics courses based on their performance on objective academic measures are not held back in a disproportionate manner on the basis of their race, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic background. ff782bc1db
