Whenever I go back to my mom's hometown in Purwakarta, sometimes my Indonesian girlfriends and I would have a sleepover at my house. There was one night where it was 5 of us and my mom's house is a two-storey house so all 5 of us slept on the second floor bedroom. The next morning, there was only 4 of us so we went to search for our 5th friend at her house. We asked her why did she leave the sleepover early.. she claimed she saw a baby pocong outside the bedroom window and called her mom to come get her. We all didn't believe her eventually. Then one night I was reading a book in the same bedroom and opposite my direction is the bedroom window. Suddenly from the corner of my eye I saw benda putih goyang up and down, I looked up... lo and behold... it was a freaking baby pocong! I quickly ran out of the room scared shitless.

In my mother's kampung, there is a large football field in the middle where all the kids would play badminton or football together in the evening. So it was selepas maghrib already and I was just sitting down at the bench watching my friends play. Suddenly I saw something like a white ball jumping from one house roof to another roof. I thought it could be a bird or some kind of animal but at the same time it felt very.. ominous. A few moments later a woman started shrieking and shrieking. The adults in the kampung told all the kids to go back home. Apparently, that night there is a kuntilanak going around the kampung and that woman (my neighbour) who screamed saw her. The adult males in the kampung made everyone stay in their homes while they try to hunt for the kuntilanak the whole night.

This one is very short and sweet. Behind my mother's house, there's this neighbour who likes to put their coffee table outside their front door. They told us that one time when they came back home, they saw a pocong lying down on the table.

Though the volcano was relatively quiet between 2010 and 2013, following its eruption in 2014 it has remained highly active. Most villagers never returned to their homes, and the towns of Sinabung, Mardinding, and Karo have become "ghost villages," covered in ash and populated more by passing animals than humans.

The continuing civil war in Myanmar has left a trail of death and destruction, and devastated towns and villages. The town of Thantlang, which I visited on February 2, 2023, has been reduced to a ghost town.
