I'm not a game reviewer, but I've played practically all the big volleyball games (Volleyball Unbound, International Volleyball, Womens Volleyball Championship, some of the retro ones). I also play a lot of other sports games like 2K and Madden so I feel like I know a bit of what I'm talking about when it comes to these games. Also helps I have about a 4 year background in indoor volleyball, which isn't much compared to a lot of people on this sub but I understand the game and it's rules and tactics. I was really hyped for this game because it looked like all I was asking for, a AAA sports game for modern consoles and PC. I'm going to try and be as objective about this game as possible.

In volleyball, spiking is the offensive play where a player swings the ball with their palm sharply downwards over the net and into the opposing court, making it difficult for the opposing team to recover the ball. The mechanism of spiking is unique to volleyball, but its counterparts in other sports include slam dunking in basketball, smashing in tennis, or shooting in association football.

Volleyball spiking became very popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the massive proliferation of beach volleyball as a popular sport. Well known beach professionals such as Karch Kiraly used the volleyball spike to score devastating points on their opponents as well as wow the crowd with the spike's air of theatricality. "Spiking" as it related to volleyball entered the international and American lexicon through video games, movies and the growing popularity of the AVP.

The spike is the most effective attack in high levels of play, used by each team to score points. It is generally on the third and final touch and involves an approach with footwork, a jump, and then an attack.[2] It is a high-velocity shot with explosive movements that send the ball over the net which usually generates the most points during the game.[3] The setter will usually toss the ball to the attacker, called a set, who will choose which attack they want to perform. As the spike requires highly coordinated movement patterns in the approach, the swing, and the landing, it is one of the more difficult skills to master in volleyball.[4]

The basic type of spike which, following the jump, the player draws the preferred hitting arm back, and the other arm pointing up, similar to a cocked bow.[3] This is followed by a whip-like action of the hitting arm, striking the ball with the hand at full extension. This spike keeps the elbow above the shoulder throughout the entire swing. Contacting the back of the ball with an open hand in the shape of the ball will create top spin.[2] The spike must be contacted above the net so that the ball be directed steeply downwards.[2]

Following the normal approach, a spike which aims for the blocker's hand nearest to the sideline to bounce off of into out of bounds. This counts as a point for the attacking team due to the last contact before out of bounds belonging to the defending team.[2] Is usually executed by higher level players.[2]

The approach is essential for getting enough speed and height to execute a spike. The player starts with their arms hanging naturally at their sides, around 3 metres from the net, behind the attack line. The approach consists of three steps, towards the net at a 45-degree angle starting with the opposite leg of the hitting hand with the arms swinging forward, the next step is a running step on the other foot, often called the directional step. This step allows for the player to adjust to the set and position accordingly, the player accelerates towards the net with step and drives their arms back for momentum in the jump. The final step is done by the starting foot to restore balance and so the player can jump off of both feet, transferring the momentum from the previous step into vertical movement. Often a heel strike is incorporated in the last two steps to brake and prevent net violations. Both hands are swung forward to add momentum and to get into position for the spike form.[2]

The significant amount of volleyball landings subject the lower limb joints of players to high forces, which may cause acute or overuse injuries.[6] A review found 54 acute injuries, 30% of which were to the knee, 17% to the ankle, and 17% to the fingers in 178 professional beach volleyball players during a 7.5 week period.[6] A proper two-footed landing is important as one-footed landings result in one leg absorbing more force, increasing risk of injury.

There are three types of serves: powerful serve, float serve and static serve. If you time any of these correctly and target the proper areas of the defense, you can put your opponents in a tough spot. The powerful serve can fly faster at the opponent and cause them to miss the ball entirely. Serving the pass does have a solid feel, and you can experience the difference between a powerful serve versus another. The animation of the service is on point and creates a realistic feel beginning each point. This is also complemented by the various types of formations you can use in your strategy to win each point. The variety of formations can be combined with rotating players to create a strategic advantage during the match. You can use these strategies to hide your setter to form an effective spike setup. On the statistics side of the things, the game does a great job including a wide range of measurables. Anywhere from spike to reception, to dig and serve, etc. During technical timeouts, there is plenty to analyze concerning which players you should include in each strategic formation or where to add them in the rotation. If you are able to create a balanced rotation at each position, you can find yourself dominating the AI throughout the game.

I also found that most points were won after the first set and spike. The ability to volley the ball back and forth is possible, but it was not consistent in my experience to have many fluid strategic moments throughout each game.

Right now, coaches spend their lives begging the hitters to stay off the net. That is due in large part to the tradition of hitting ON the net. Not only is this easier to block for any sized player, but it also makes for more ankle sprains and injuries when the set drifts too close to the net. The BEST way to learn to spike is to first hit 2-meter high balls from the 3-meter (aka 10-foot or back-row spike) line. You can have it set higher if you want (see the impact of higher sets elsewhere in this article), but you should start at the 3-meter line, then move closer as the practice and season develop.

Basically, the higher the set, compared to what you are used to, the sooner/faster you need to swing your arm to still hit it at full extension. Remember how hard this is. The volleyball spike is the ONLY action in sport where maximum effort is done unsupported every time. Basketball players do not take jump shots from 3/4 court every time. Baseball batters do not have to jump and swing to hit home runs. Volleyball is also the only sport where one maximum effort, jumping, is followed immediately by another max effort, spiking the ball. It takes a LOT of repetitions and good timing to hit that sweet spot every time.

When that error in ball/jump/hit means the ball is over their non-dominant shoulder, most players lean over to put the ball as much in front of their dominant shoulder as they can. The end result: they land on their opposite leg (left leg for a right-handed spiker in this predicament) and they too often injure that knee on landing. You need to have an ace up your sleeve and be able to roll shot or control a ball with your non-dominant hand. Practice this in short court warm-up games and hit some sets as well, so you can do it. This is NOT at full power, unless you get a lot of practice. It is with control.
