I am going to start with a brief overview of which companies have which licenses as that plays such a big part in the quality of these products. It is not like other sports where there is one main professional league.

For the 2020/21 season Topps added a Bundesliga Sapphire set to the mix. If there are players that appear in the Bundesliga set but not UCL then the Bundesliga Sapphire becomes their chase card in my opinion. That was the case with Florian Wirtz in the 2020/21 set. While not everyone considers it his rookie thanks to his Topps Now card, those that like collecting parallels consider this his rookie card to own.

Panini started putting their popular Kabooms (Search on eBay) and Color Blasts (Search on eBay) in Prizm starting in 2019/2020 Premier League so those help carry the value on a set that often needs it. They include these periodically in other sets as well, but they are consistently in Prizm Premier League.

These are brands that most collectors will be familiar with. Topps and Panini will release them for a year or two then inexplicably not do them for a year or two. Those gaps cause some confusion as there is no consistency. I think we will see most of these brands become every year releases as the companies pump out more product.

Panini brought back Select in a big way for the 2022/23 season. They did 4 different standalone sets. One for La Liga, Premier League, Serie A and FIFA. The sets all have the same basic makeup but vary widely in print runs. Make sure to read the reviews of each for a better understanding.

Panini blessed us with a 2022 Eminence set. It lived up to the hype by becoming the set of the year. There were some disappointments with the release which you can read about in the review. Even so make no mistake Eminence was the premier set of the year.

Panini did in fact put out a 2022 National Treasures Road To Qatar set. It being a Road To Qatar and not a World Cup release took a little luster off. That said it had some great cards including Lionel Messi on-card autos which are big chases.

Topps has already announced the Merlin 97 Heritage on demand paper product and 2021/2022 Merlin Chrome set (Search on eBay). For the 2021/2022 set they are using the Europa Conference League license which could make things very interesting. This will give them a much sider pool of players for more potential rookies. Based on this I expect Merlin to stay around for years to come and to be quite collectible.

Panini did continue the Score brand for 2022-23 and even included a Ligue 1 set which was great to see. They continued to be European only releases which hurts the worldwide appeal. It is still a great entry level set.

Topps and Panini release on demand products that you can usually only buy directly through their website for a short amount of time. The curated on demand sets usually have a set print run even though they are on demand. If the checklist is good the bots buy these immediately. If not, they sit there for a while. Topps is releasing these so frequently I am not going to bother breaking them all down. Just check the checklists before you buy and if there is something you like buy it.

The soccer card hobby has got much harder to navigate these days. If you are a new collector, I suggest picking one or two sets you like and focus on these. There are sets at every price point now so there is something for everyone. There are even going to be Topps paper sets this year which is not for me but maybe you will like them. As I said if I could only pick one it would be Topps Chrome or Sapphire Champions League but that is just me. Second would actually be Topps Merlin Chrome because of the way Topps is using the license. It should allow them a great checklist. When a foul is committed, the team who was fouled will be awarded a direct free kick, which is simply a free pass or shot from the spot the foul was committed. During a direct free kick, the opposing team must stay ten yards away from the ball. Here is an example of a basic foul, and resulting direct free kick:

As you can see from the above video, Orlando City midfielder Kevin Molino was fouled by NYCFC defender Ned Grabavoy. While Molino was dribbling the ball towards the goal, Grabavoy stuck his leg in front of Molino attempting to knock the ball away. Since Grabavoy did not touch the ball and tripped Molino, he was whistled for the foul. Since it was not a careless or reckless play, he was only given a foul, and not a yellow or red card.

It is important to remember that if Grabavoy would have touched the ball with his foot before tripping Molino, then no foul would have been called. If a player touches the ball before the player, in most cases that would nullify any foul.

After Molino was fouled, Orlando City was awarded a direct free kick with the defenders being forced to stand 10 feet away. Kak took the free kick and scored the tying goal.

In the months leading up to its latest World Cup win, the US Women's National Team sued its parent organization over income inequality in US soccer. Statements from high-profile players, like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, contributed to a national conversation about the gender pay gap that exists not just in soccer but across many professions. The claims of the Women's Team should make for a perfect Equal Pay Act claim, but all signs point to a loss. Instead, the women are far more likely to succeed on their claim arising under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, despite the lack of evidence showing that the pay discrepancy is the result of discrimination. This Note examines the claims brought and how they highlight the inadequacy of the Equal Pay Act. The world's best women's soccer team isn't being paid equally with its far-less-successful male counterpart; if the women's team can't make out a successful Equal Pay Act claim, who can? This Note urges amending the Equal Pay Act in a few key ways to ensure that women are paid equally to men when performing the same work.

This punishment-ridden card does not only interrupt the momentum a team may have in a particular game, but it will have players suspended. It even leaves teams shorthanded as a substitute for the red-carded player is not permitted.

There have been a few concerns over the new rule, the media and fans believe that the blue card is not really different from a player getting a yellow card, and others feel that the yellow-red system is working well already. This is not the first time FIFA has introduced a controversial system. VAR has been in the game for six years now and the software is yet to be perfected, the system usually slows down the game whenever there is an offsides call the refs need to double check, the system double checks every goal, and red-card worthy foul. A lot of fans are even asking for VAR to be taken out of the game as a result of the constant stopping of games.

One of my "pet peeves" is when a free kick is awarded the opposition has a player go and stand over the ball. In my pre-game with coaches and captains I tell them this is a yellow card offense. However, I am seeing this done more and more at the professional level with no repercussions. Is this something that referees should ignore? I have seen other referees card the defending player is the ball hits them. In my opinion this causes the kicker having the opportunity to kick the ball directly at the defending player and then raises issues regarding dangerous play

HI Peter,

once the free kick is awarded to the opposing team, a defending player standing over or near the free kick location is in fact, more guilty of delaying the restart of play, as opposed to, failure to respect the distance.

While both are cautionable actions they are NOT automatic yellow cards.

We allow SOME leeway for the defence to recover and dissipate in a TIMELY fashion! If there was ALREADY cautionable misconduct associated with the reason to stop play we must deal with that and that again takes time.

WE also recognize that often attacking teams WANT to take a ceremonial free kick and are OK with the wall setting and time delays.

What is a fallacy or myth is this crazy idea the attackers need to ASK for ten yards! They DO NOT need to ask for anything, they can CHOOSE to go quickly or wait and make it cerimonial as it is THEIR free kick.

The Defending team have NO rights except an auto mandate within the LOTG to withdraw 10 yards from the restart location in ALL directions. . The ONLY time they CAN be within ten yards is at an INDFK within their own penalty area where they COULD be between 6 to 9.9 yards away BUT they would have to be standing on the goal line under the crossbar and between the posts.

I want to point out a similarity in the actions of defenders against an attacking player about to take the free kick and the attacking keeper during a 6 second punt out or release. Just know that rhe keeper interference is an INDFK out for a foul during active play where the free kick remains as is in a misconduct only situation. Both the attacker player & keeper can CHOOSE to take the kick even with opposing players in close proximity.

If they hit the defender accidently its tough luck and play continues.

BUT

If the attackers DELIBERATELY try to angle the kick or a throw AT the defender we have USB or a striking action and worse than USB a send off for VC as a possibility.

HOWEVER, to your pet peeve, if it is PAINFULLY obvious the defender is creating the situation to unfold with controversy you as a referee have the authority to call them on their BS. You sense the frustration of the kicker as the defender is milling about or moving in or kicks the ball away unfairly you certainly can stop things caution for delaying the restart and set the bar.

A defending player will deliberately wander away at odd angles or jogs to thwart a kick or attack from being exploited. They do this not only at free kicks but often during active play they track keepers about to punt the ball to mess with the 6 second release. They are not in good faith backing away from the restart spot or keeper, often they are in behind and cut across or in front of the kicker/keeper pretending to be retreating towards their own goal.

Other defenders will bend down tying a shoe pretending to be winded or engage in an argument or some discussion with the kicker or more risky even the referee to distract and give their teammates TIME to get in line for defending. This is in effect continuing in the same reasoning why they created the free kick circumstances fouling an opposing player to stop an attack. This is just additional misconduct with the SAME aim, to allow recovery time!

During pregame you COULD remark about proper substitutions and PERHAPS expectations of 10 yards now at free kicks to express intolerance for foolish behaviour. Do not threaten them with cards WILL be shown but we could certainly imply the USB action of such behaviour can cause cards to appear.

The last thing is advantage .

At a quick restart or even a ceremonial one the defenders can try to delay the restart and FAIL (a quick outlet pass is not intercepted by the too close defender, which springs the attack) just as they can not respect the ten yards and FAIL ( an early charge in to thwart the kick as the ball hits or just misses the too early closing defender resulting in a a goal or a clear beneficial outcome) In these cases perhaps a verbal warning on how LUCKY that defender was NOT to be cautioned. If the outcome is NOT beneficial due to the illegal or unfair interference indeed caution show the yellow card and retake!

 Cheers
