I am creating a multiplayer android game as a part of my coursework. This is my first game. I intended to allow users to connect to the game over a simple network. I don't want to use internet at all hence I wont be using the android game services. How do I go about this. I have no clue at all. I have tried various tutorials but all of them are using a central game server. I just want to create a simple Client - Server network. One user will host a game and others will join.

it's my first time answering a question here. I usually just read here in stackoverflow. I'm also currently working on my first game. It connects devices using wifi peer-to-peer or WifiDirect (without a wifi hotspot). It requires high version of android OS (4.0 or 4.1?) but I believe you can also try the other way on which the devices needs to connect in the same wifi hotspot for lower OS version requirements. The latter, I haven't tried yet.

Ok so my friends and I want to play Minecraft in school. 1 year ago we played it and it worked just fine over hotspot. I setup the hotspot, they connect to my hotspot, and when they enter Minecraft it worked fine. Now on update 1.9.0.5 beta I setup hotspot, they connect to my hotspot and if I launch a already created world before, it won't show up in friends list. Now here's the twist if I create a totally new world it would actually show up in friends tab and they can join and it all works great we can do everything. And if I than exit and enter again in the world it won't show up. So it's basically one time only.

You can directly connect to a server by LAN IP without needing of an internet connection, but the only problem is the license validation that last only 3days, and multiplayer will be disabled when operating in "offline mode"

You can use an hotspot just to validate the login, and open the game, then you can turn off the mobile connection, and leave just the LAN connected, or keep it on, since the traffic anyway will be only on LAN, not out and back in over internet between the two computers.

I could actually set-up local multiplayer with Minecraft PE by using Bluetooth tethering without using any WiFi or data on my android phone - would this be actually possible with The Blockheads as well?

Since I got my cousins hooked to this game , I do play local multiplayer games on IOS ( not sure about android ) and while it is possible to set up a local multiplayer game , you can join only when connected to wifi or a cellular network as far as my experience shows me.

However , This is only my exprience with Local multiplayer games on the Blockheads on IOS devices only. Somebody else might have a better answer.

I am leaving for a mountain property that has no internet. I understand that you need to be online for social and online multiplayer games. But dose the Quest work without internet and can I use it to play my games like "The Thrill of the Fight" or "First Person Tennis" and watch videos offline? There is a spot downhill where I go to call with my mobile phone and there I have a shaky connection with my mobile. (Incase internet is needed to turn it on)!

You'll be fine to shutdown. Just don't log out or do a factory reset, lol! Actually, if you have mobile phone coverage you may be able to use your smartphone as a wifi hotspot for internet access. I did this recently while on a holiday and it worked pretty well for internet access when I needed it. Uses up a lot of your mobile data though so make sure you have a good phone plan, lol!
