CRITICAL ELEMENTS: To construct the reading experience the brain must DIFFERENTIATE and process a number of elements including: Letters, Phonemes, Morphemes, and Vocabulary.

CRITICAL SPEED: The brain must process all the above fast enough to construct Recognizable Words at Speeds that approximate the rate at which the brain is accustomed to Recognizing Spoken Language. Processing speed is critical. Analysis of the Eye Movements of good readers reveals that, on average, the brain must process letters into sounds in less than a tenth of a second.

Last year, the Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative proposed a challenge. This challenge was for students to describe their perspectives on the ethics, limitations, and implications of emerging technologies that are used to study and treat disorders of the human brain. Students were invited to submit their perspectives in the form of a 2-page essay or a video no longer than 5 minutes. Well, when the BRAIN Initiative called, the students answered! In fact, the NIH received over a hundred submissions from students across the United States for this BRAIN Initiative Challenge. Submissions were carefully reviewed by members of both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the BRAIN Initiative Alliance, as well as actual BRAIN scientists. Final selections occurred after thoughtful evaluation by NIH leadership involved in BRAIN and ethics. You can see the prize-winning submissions by visiting the updated Challenge Submission page!

If you missed this prize competition, never fear! The NIH BRAIN Initiative is thrilled to announce plans for another Challenge for high school students in the coming year. Check back at www.braininitiative.nih.gov and on @USBrainAlliance!

BRAINS! is Challenge #27, added in The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth. This challenge is played as ??? and you start blindfolded, with 3 Bob's Brain, Thunder Thighs and the Bob transformation. The goal is to defeat ???. Treasure Rooms do not spawn in this Challenge.

Bob's Brain is a difficult item to use, as it is not only easy to do one full heart of self-damage when fighting enemies, it also leaves ??? exposed while waiting for the brains to respawn. Adding to the problem is that playing as ??? forbids obtaining Red Hearts. With no Treasure Rooms and having to reach Chest, lots of skill and luck are necessary to beat this challenge.

Charts track each player's overall performance and progress. Players can also select an A.I. coach to guide them through the various tests and assist them in setting and reaching training goals. Up to four players can challenge each other offline or online.

Think of it as exercising your brain! The same activities that are beneficial for the rest of your body are also good for your brain as it ages. There are additional activities that you can specifically do to ward off memory loss. Any activity that challenges your mind and requires you to learn new information or skills is considered an exercise. Here are some good exercises to challenge your brain:

The brain is the most complex organ in the body and there is still a lot we ignore about it. Understanding its mechanisms and its pathologies is key to preventing and curing neurological and psychiatric diseases.

The Open Brain School will set a new standard of excellence in education for research trainees in neuroscience, clinicians as well as scientists. It will also make neuroscience education available to anyone so that citizens can become actors of their own brain health.

Left two images are the raw electron microscopy images of small pieces of brain tissues; right two images are the color-coded brain maps generated by computers, where different colors represent different neurons.

In 2013, MIT organized a competition that called on researchers to develop automated computer algorithms that could speed up image analysis, decode and understand images of brain circuitry. As part of the competition, the algorithms are compared to work that was done by a real team of neuroscientists. If computers can become as accurate as humans, they will be able to do the computations much faster and cheaper than humans, said Ji.

While the WSU research team was able to approach human accuracy in the MIT challenge, they still have a lot of work to do in getting the computers to develop complete and accurate neural maps. The computers still make a large number of mistakes, and there is not yet a gold standard for comparing human and computational results, said Ji. Although it may not be realistic to expect that automated methods would completely replace human soon, improvements in computational methods will certainly lead to reduced manual proof-reading, he added.

According to Ron, the daily challenge of class discussions and assignments has improved his long-term memory and ability to remember past experiences he had thought forgotten. Learning in a group environment also helped maintain his social skills.

Keeping your brain active can help you live well with dementia, just like it has helped Ron. Here are a few ways you can challenge your brain (these tips can help people reduce their risk of getting dementia, too):

By constantly learning new things and challenging your brain throughout your life, you can help build your cognitive reserve. Learning a new language and taking up new hobbies are good examples of brain-challenging activities.

What's something you're not good at doing? Work to improve it and give your brain some flexibility. Try a variety of challenges instead of sticking to one particular area. It's never too late to try something new.

Examples of brain-challenging games can include chess, tabletop games, video games, word and number puzzles, jigsaws, crosswords, sudoku and memory games. For games on your computer, your tablet or your phone, find games where you can play and interact with other people.

This follow-up to The Train Your Brain Workout includes more than 150 unique visual puzzles beyond your average word search or crossword, challenges, and including anagrams, binarios, connects, doodle puzzles, golf mazes, Sudoku, and more. It's important to exercise your body, so why not exercise your brain?

Research on the neurobiology of the kynurenine pathway has suffered years of relative obscurity because tryptophan degradation, and its involvement in both physiology and major brain diseases, was viewed almost exclusively through the lens of the well-established metabolite serotonin. With increasing recognition that kynurenine and its metabolites can affect and even control a variety of classic neurotransmitter systems directly and indirectly, interest is expanding rapidly. Moreover, kynurenine pathway metabolism itself is modulated in conditions such as infection and stress, which are known to induce major changes in well-being and behaviour, so that kynurenines may be instrumental in the etiology of psychiatric and neurological disorders. It is therefore likely that the near future will not only witness the discovery of additional physiological and pathological roles for brain kynurenines, but also ever-increasing interest in drug development based on these roles. In particular, targeting the kynurenine pathway with new specific agents may make it possible to prevent disease by appropriate pharmacological or genetic manipulations. The following overview focuses on areas of kynurenine research which are either controversial, of major potential therapeutic interest, or just beginning to receive the degree of attention which will clarify their relevance to neurobiology and medicine. It also highlights technical issues so that investigators entering the field, and new research initiatives, are not misdirected by inappropriate experimental approaches or incorrect interpretations at this time of skyrocketing interest in the subject matter. This article is part of the Special Issue entitled 'The Kynurenine Pathway in Health and Disease'.

And this combination of growth factors and new brain cells that comes from healthy living, challenging the brain, and staying socially connected in a meaningful way may actually help protect the brain or keep it more resilient against changes that cause dementia.

She would have made a great reporter, that one. But I'm glad that I get to be the one to share the news flash here, which is that staying sharp mentally boils down to using your brain and your body, no matter what your age.
