I used to see many options for the background and screensavers but in the last 6 months or so I noticed this change. It may have been more recent but I've been busy and can't be positive of the timing.

Or, in other cases, it for none of these given reasons. Take the Haystack News screensaver (one of the few useful, functional and free screensavers on Roku), who now has to pull it (and replace it with a message it's having to do so...) stating that "Roku requires that a screensaver not be bundled with an app, so we have to remove the screensaver functionality from our app."

I admit there has become a real blur between some apps/screensavers, but why punish the successful app publishers on the platform? The channel store is BURSTING with garbage/abandon/disfuntional offerings, but Haystack is one of the most updatd and robust players on the platform.

Just upgraded to Sonoma on my 2023 Macbook and am trying to use the wallpapers. Some of the Landscape wallpapers do not fit my screen properly. It seems to be too high of a resolution as I am only able to see a portion of the picture. There doesn't seem to be any controls to fit the picture to the screen. I am trying to use the Scotland ones. I also did a bit of digging and found that those wallpapers are .mov files rather than a picture file like jpg or png. Can you even change the resolution of .mov files?

I am using Apple Studio Display (which is a 5K monitor), Sonoma wallpapers are blurry except one "Sonoma Horizon" which was the default wallpaper when I installed Sonoma for the first time. All the other wallpapers are either seem to be cropped or not crystal clear. I guess it might be fixed in future updates

Thank you xaru_fushigi for confirming the problem. Apple has been really promoting these new "motion" wallpapers/screen savers. It's unfortunate that they have been implemented improperly as it is a nice touch in the aesthetics department. There are a A LOT of these new wallpapers/screensavers included with Sonoma, but as I said, they are simply unusable - not sure how this could have gotten into the final release. Again, thanks for confirming.

I am having the same/similar issue. I am running a 4K external display connected to my M1 16" MBP. Everything has been crystal clear until Sonoma. ALL (yes, every single one) of the new "motion" wallpapers/screensavers are BLURRY. Maybe they were shot in 5K and look fine on the Apply display? - Not sure. All I know is that all mine do not scale properly @ 4K and are noticeably blurry to the point where they are UNUSABLE. I believe this is happening because it is taking a single frame from the motion shot and using it for the still background when not in motion. Each individual frame is not necessarily "in focus", but when set in motion you do not notice because it is essentially a .mov file.

I am unable to get into Wallpaper through the System Settings. When I tried to open Wallpaper in the settings, it initially indicated that there was an error but that was a flash and gone. Now, it shows none of the wallpaper images and my screen is using the one that was in use when it crapped out.....

I also just upgraded to Sonoma, and all the supplied static Apple wallpaper images are totally zoomed in to maybe 1/4 of the image. I can't find any way to fix it. So not just the moving, but the static. And in fact the Sonoma native wallpaper was SO bright and SO intense, I thought if I changed to something more neutral it would help. But no. The agave plant is so big I can practically see aphids crawling up the leaves ;-(

These wallpapers are actually Apple's screensavers / aerial movies taken from Apple TV. They can be downloaded in 4K as the maximum resolution and therefore look blurred on a 5K screen. This is most likely not a software issue. There is probably just no 5K material (yet).

Permit me to use this article as a forum for education. For it is time that we as a culture come together, put aside our differences, and formulate the important distinction between wallpaper and screensaver. Most of us, when pressed on the issue, can make the right call. But to the unknown percentage of the continent that needs a little prodding, I offer this quick refresher.

Now let's flip over to the other side of the coin. The term 'wallpaper' comes directly from the Latin word 'wallpaper,' which describes 'a paper product used to cover one's walls.' In our fast-paced I.T. world, a computer's 'wallpaper' is the image one opts to have as a background for their desktop. Prior to the software boon of the 1980s, if a person were to suggest 'wallpapering their windows,' they'd likely be detained for a 48-hour psychiatric evaluation. (Or at the very least would have to settle on attending a rather second-rate interior design college).

For many, wallpapers are comprised of pictures of your kids. Or your wife. Or Angelina Jolie. If you happen to be Brad Pitt, you can check off all three options with the simple scanning of one family portrait. But to most of us, this is an unlikely option.

Now unless your kids are in constant motion on the screen in the same 'endearing' way they are at home, you've still got yourself wallpaper my friend, and not a screensaver. (Also, here's a pharmaceutical tip: Ritalin.) 'Lack of movement' is generally a sure sign you're dealing with wallpaper. And having a static video image of your family in front of you at work for eight hours a day may play a small part in saving your marriage, but it ain't gonna save the display on that old Sony E200 monitor you're still lugging around.

Which raises the question: Do folks confuse wallpaper for screensavers because they're inherently dense? You know, plagued by a congenital flaw brought on by suspect RNA sequencing? Or is this lack of common sense essentially a learned behavior, caused by a combination of environment and upbringing? Only Charles Darwin can truly answer this riddle, and given his current penchant for not being alive ('survival of the fittest' indeed, eh Chuck?) the answer appears to be buried with him. Or cremated with him. To be honest, I'm a tad sketchy on the specifics of his Living Will.

Don't get me wrong. For the most part people are only half-stupid. For although they may mistake your wallpaper for a screensaver, there is absolutely no chance of the reverse taking place. A screensaver, for reasons known to very few, is never, ever mistaken for wallpaper.

To many an ill-informed family member or co-worker, wallpaper can be construed as being both wallpaper and screensaver at the same time. In their view, the physical properties of both are attributed to the one. Are there any precedents to such a bizarre occurrence? Only two spring to mind. There's the theoretical realm of quantum physics, where matter is reputed to possess both wave and particle-like properties. And there's the realm of 1950s-based musicals, where the Greased Lightning is somehow recognized as being both systematic and hyrdromatic.

In the final analysis, I present you with this: through perseverance and proper education, I'm cautiously optimistic the distinction between wallpaper and screensaver can, in our lifetime, be made as clear as, say, Crystal Pepsi. Sadly, at this very moment, it appears to be as cloudy as the Crystal Pepsi marketing campaign. So in the meantime, to quote venerable Sergeant Phil Esterhaus of Hill Street Blues fame, "Let's be careful out there." ff782bc1db
