December bid a pleasant goodbye with festivities loaded with long weekends. With due respect to both Lady December and the Goddess of Holidays, I decided to curl up on my couch and binge watch movies. And this time, paying heed to some long pending recommendations, I decided to finally watch some of the Marathi movies on my list. Before I go any further, the disclaimer is that I am not a big movie-buff and have grown to be very selective in my choices. So it is likely that this may come across as a myopic interpretation of movies all around us. Also, that my knowledge about the constitution of a good movie or about movie making dynamics - is zilch; but as a viewer and in my opinion - watching a movie is like reading a new book or perhaps even like visiting an unseen destination. It is some sort of a story-telling by someone unknown to you. You essentially get transported into a someplace else, and in the process uncovering yet another dimension of evolution, society or for that matter, your own-self.

Having said that, I am well aware that there is a certain predefined set of audience for every genre of a movie and rightly so, be it the Dabanng type or the Manto type. Emphasis here is not on the actor but the character and the central theme of the movie. Like we know the definitive set of audience for the Raj and the Rahul's of the Hindi Cinema. But we are observing that in the recent times, the world of Hindi cinema is embracing more realistic and content driven movies. This is welcoming, for we know that cinema is powerful medium of mass communication and change. However, when I dig a little deeper, in the Marathi movies that I got to binge watch, the realization is that Regional movies of this nation have far superseded the art of this story-telling. I am by no means undercutting any of our Bollywood produce, instead, am trying to draw your attention to this acute transition of Marathi cinema. Or the fact could be that, Marathi movies were always admirable but people like me are getting introduced to it only now with the advent of OTTs and the uncovering of internet flood gates in India.

Case in point, Fandry. It is not about Hindi vs non-Hindi language or about the affluent backdrops vs the needy or about exotic plots vs the ordinary or about the iconic actors vs the unsung. It is about the 'authenticity' in the movie. The genuineness of movies like Fandry hits the bulls-eye. There are other movies like Natrang, Natsamarat or Jogwa which I feel are still privileged, sanctified with celebrated actors or powerful historical or communal story-lines. So perhaps lets regard them as exceptions. But like Fandry there are more - Shwaas or Court. There is a certain candidness in the way these movies are made. They are raw, simple, straight-forward and truthful. Such movies do not ride on popularity of their star-cast or do not carry the magnetism of religious or historical plots and are definitely not larger-than-life portrayal of lives. They are simple stories of day-to-day lives of anyone. Stories of how a common-man deals with different emotions of their daily lives.

Take for example, Devrai or Deeol. Devrai is a rather dark movie with a disturbing plot, hence does not fall in the mass audience bucket. But I was moved with the genuineness of its depiction. This movie is about a schizophrenic, and we have had movies made on them before. Classic being The Beautiful Mind. Similarly with Devrai, a viewer actually gets carried into the mind of a mentally challenged person and effortlessly learns to understand - why and how they behave, the way they behave in their ailment. A worthwhile message to the society to take cognizance of such a condition and draw respect to these people. Then there are movies like Premachi Gosht or Aamhi Doghi - real issues and real emotions. They easily hit a home run. Its mass.

In my own naive decoding, I am of the opinion that Hindi cinema has somewhat lost its vision juggling between input vs output ratios and their commercial equilibrium. And Marathi cinema on the other hand is still rooted with the essence of content and its connection. In the pursuit of driving aspirational and futuristic content for the ambitious core Indian audience, Hindi cinema perhaps has missed the bus. The larger question however is - do audience dictate which type of movies should be made or do movies lead the audience into building an ascertained society? Either ways, I am no expert.

But, I cannot give you a better comparison than Sairat vs Dhadak to explain the minimalism of Marathi movies. The unfiltered rawness with austere depictions of everything from locations to emotions is what makes this industry stand class apart. What do you say?
