Later on 21 October 2008, RIM announced at the BlackBerry Developer Conference that the company would open an application store for their devices.[5] It was also announced that the store was scheduled to be open in March 2009, and would work in conjunction with PayPal's services. On 19 January 2009, RIM began accepting submissions of applications from developers.[6]
On 4 March 2009, RIM officially named the store 'BlackBerry App World'[7] (previously called the BlackBerry Application Storefront). It was also confirmed that the service would not initially be available for desktops, and only a web-based catalogue would be accessible from non-BlackBerry devices.

I am a past BlackBerry user. Used a Z10 for 4 years after getting one in 2013. I have moved on to several Samsung phones since 2017. However, I keep my Z10 running connected only to wi-fi for no other purpose than to help the few poor folks on the CrackBerry forums who refuse to move on from a dead OS. After all, the phones do still work on the cell networks that will have them.
For those who want to avoid having the BlackBerry server shutdown affect them, we have been able to remove our devices from BB Protect, and then set up the phones without BBID. Unfortunately that also removes access to BlackBerry World, or any of our own backups. Which leaves us with the stock apps as provided in the OS.

Having removed the Spotify App from my BB Bold 9700, I wasn't able to reinstall it using the App World. Even other download links, such as Softonic didn't work any more. I had to fully reinstall the devices software forcing me to delete every data and app having been installed before. If course I backed up the relevant data before but after having restarted the device and having downloaded the App World once more, I still couldn't find Spotify there. I searched for the Spotify software for Bold 9700 on google and there is indeed a link to the exact software in the App World I downloaded and used before. Unfortunately App World told me the software isn't available for my device. Trying the Softonic link I had seen before I was finally able to reinstall the software!

BlackBerry can produce all of the nicest phones in the world if it wants, but the low standards it has for the apps in its app store, and the seemingly minimal effort it has put into trying to improve it, ultimately contributed to the once-venerable company's demise.
