At first, it was called Blue Ribbon Sports and sold Onitsuka Tiger sneakers. Everything changed in 1971 when co-founder Phil Knight decided to launch his production of products under the Nike brand.

These converse sneakers are not your average pair of shoes. As part of the In Their Shoes campaign, Michael was asked to contribute by hand drawing on a pair of Converse, which would be auctioned off for charity on Ebay. Michael was amongst many of music's biggest stars that were asked to design these one of a kind works of art. The team at In Their Shoes waited patiently for his contribution to arrive and upon opening the shoe box, they realised that Michael had drawn on his ACTUAL PAIR OF SNEAKERS.

When it came to the design of the sneakers, students looked for inspiration in a variety of places. Gornet dug into her portfolio for ideas. A typeset project and a digital font ended up leading to her design featuring reds, blues and pinks in digital pixel patterns.

Trendy wheeled sneakers that let kids zip down sidewalks, across playgrounds and through mall crowds could also send them rolling into emergency rooms on a stretcher, say doctors who blame a rash of injuries on the international craze.

Even before there was Nike or the Swoosh, there was Blue Ribbon Sports, the first iteration of the sportswear giant. The first-ever Blue Ribbon Sports logo came in 1967 as a simple horizontal script font. It was, of course, done up in blue (it wasn't just a clever name, after all). Soon thereafter an interlocking letters design became the corporate logo until 1976 when the company was still transitioning to the name Nike.

The Swoosh { "id": 133813807, "buzz_id": 6404518, "index": 3 } Image via Nike The history of Nike's original logo is well known. Coming off the Blue Ribbon Sports days, co-founder Phil Knight's newly named Nike needed an official mark. Portland State University graphic design student Carolyn Davidson created the Swoosh, originally dubbed the Stripe when it was created in 1971. With Nike script lettering beneath, the combo held steady until 1976, when Nike changed the font to Futura, which remains today. The only other change to the logo came in 1995, when Nike dropped the lettering altogether and switched the "warm red" to orange, the color of the brand today.

Athletics West { "id": 133813805, "buzz_id": 6404518, "index": 5 } Image via Nike The original Athletics West mark, designed by Tim Ferguson, a local graphic artist, included a wordmark font named Axemen after the mascot for South Eugene High School. Debuting in 1977 for the track and field club, the colorful mark included a singular tree and also purple mountains topped with snow. Subsequent designs kept the wordmark, tree, and mountains, but changed up colors and placement.

The Just Do It logo, created by Ron Dumas, first appeared in 1989, giving graphic identity to Nike's most recognizable brand slogan. The basic design and boldness of the font, coupled with the marketing know-how of the brand, elevated a simple design to global status, whether seen on television commercials or across apparel.
