A fire alarm system is a building system designed to detect and alert occupants and emergency forces of the presence of smoke, fire, carbon monoxide, or other fire-related emergencies. Fire alarm systems are required in most commercial buildings. They may include smoke detectors, heat detectors, and manual fire alarm activation devices, all of which are connected to a Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) normally found in an electrical room or panel room. Fire alarm systems generally use visual and audio signalization to warn the occupants of the building. Some fire alarm systems may also disable elevators, which under most circumstances, are unsafe to use during a fire.[1]

Across Oceania, some Standards outline the requirements, test methods, and performance criteria for fire detection control and indicating equipment (FDCIE) utilised in building fire detection and fire alarm systems.

Alarms can be either motorized bells or wall-mountable sounders/horns. They can also be speaker strobes that sound an alarm, followed by a voice evacuation message for clearer instructions on what to do. Fire alarm sounders can be set to certain frequencies and different tones, including low, medium, and high, depending on the country and manufacturer of the device. New codes and standards introduced around 2010, especially the new UL Standard 2572, the US Department of Defense's UFC 4-021-01 Design and O&M Mass Notification Systems, and NFPA 72 2010 edition Chapter 24, have led fire alarm system manufacturers to expand their systems voice evacuation capabilities to support new requirements for mass notification including support for multiple types of emergency messaging (i.e., inclement weather emergency, security alerts, amber alerts). The major requirement of a mass notification system are to provide prioritized messaging according to the local facilities' emergency response plan. The emergency response team must prioritize potential emergency events at the site. The fire alarm system must support the promotion and demotion of notifications based on this emergency response plan. Emergency Communication Systems also have requirements for visible notification in coordination with any audible notification activities to meet needs of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Many manufacturers have tried to certify their equipment to meet these new and emerging standards. Mass notification system categories include the following:

Mass notification systems often extend the notification appliances of a standard fire alarm system to include PC-based workstations, text-based digital signage, and a variety of remote notification options including email, text message, RSS feed, or IVR-based telephone text-to-speech messaging.

Residential Fire Alarm Systems are also common place. Residential system code is a lot less strict then in commercial buildings. Typically residential fire alarm systems are installed as part of a security systems. In the United States, a residential fire alarm system is required if more than 12 smoke detectors are needed.[19] Residential Systems are a lot less complex then commercial systems and have few parts compared to commercial systems.

Fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises are generally designed and installed in accordance with the guidance given in BS 5839 Part 1. There are many types of fire alarm systems, each suited to different building types and applications. A fire alarm system can vary dramatically in price and complexity, from a single panel with a detector and sounder in a small commercial property to an addressable fire alarm system in a multi-occupancy building.

Any building with a fire alarm system or other related system, such as a sub-system, is required to have an individual holding a Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems and Other Related Systems (S-95) physically present.

Hey @dreamiz2. Putting in the 4 digit code for the Keypad and then hitting the Disarm button should Disarm the alarming event that your Base Station is registering. Then, you will normally need to silence the Smoke/Co Alarm itself, which is the button at the top of the physical Alarm. Hope this helps!

I recently had my garage First Alert Z-wave Smoke/CO Detector go off accidentally when my workshop project produced a lot of smoke. I too used the keypad to disarm the alarming event of my Ring Base Station, but my first attempt did not work, and I believe it might have been due to my rushed entering of an incorrect code during the excitement. My second attempt on the keypad was successful.

For Fire/Smoke/Burglar alarms, whenever the Professional Monitoring successfully reaches any of your listed Emergency Contact numbers (or if you call them back if you missed their call to you) with the correct Verbal Password, you can cancel this emergency, and Professional Monitoring can again call the Emergency Response Teams IF they already dispatched them.

I get a lot of RFPs that call out these systems and would like to bid on them. It looks like most of the equipment is available for purchase on sites like firealarm.com but I'm assuming I'd have no way of actually programming the system myself after installation. Since 2009, the City of Redmond has offered a form of third-party verification of fire alarm central station service called the fire alarm operational permit (FAOP). The FAOP enhances the fire department's ability to respond to emergencies by listing contact and basic system information while satisfying the NFPA 72 requirements for central station service documentation.

Beginning on January 1, 2021, all fire alarm systems must have a current Fire Alarm Operational Permit (FAOP); no additional premise certificates are required by Redmond Fire for documentation of central station service.

Redmond Fire requires that the building owner select a fire alarm service company as the prime contractor for the fire alarm system in a building. The selected company must be listed as a provider of central station service by UL, Intertek (ETL), or FM Global. The Nashua Fire Rescue Fire Alarm Division is located at the intersection of Lake Street and Chestnut Streets housed in the second oldest fire house in the city, built in 1901. The former Station 2 was refurbished into a state of the art communications and Fire Alarm Office in the fall of 1999.
