In the original Wyss story the family had left Europe and were en route to Port Jackson, Australia when they were shipwrecked. Where the family end up is thought to have been the East Indies which back in 1812 described the region of Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and New Guinea. The 1960 Disney film saw the family actually bound for New Guinea not Australia so that piece of evidence will colour our belief in where they end up (even if it was a Disney addition and not necessarily the thoughts of the original author).

Swiss Family Robinson is a 1960 American adventure film starring John Mills, Dorothy McGuire, James MacArthur, Janet Munro, Tommy Kirk, and Kevin Corcoran in a tale of a shipwrecked family building an island home. It was the second feature film based on the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss, a previous adaptation having been released by RKO Pictures in 1940. Directed by Ken Annakin and shot in Tobago and Pinewood Studios outside London, it was the first widescreen Walt Disney Pictures film shot with Panavision lenses; when shooting in widescreen, Disney had almost always used a matted wide screen or filmed in CinemaScope.[2]

The captain offers to help Ernst get into a London university, and to take the rest of the family back to Europe or on to New Guinea. Father and Mother, however, decide that they would rather stay on the island and keep Francis with them for a few more years. The captain speculates that the island will become a new colony, and that Father will be nominated to be its governor. Fritz and Roberta also decide to stay on the island, and the family waves goodbye to Ernst as he, the captain, and the ship's crew set out for England. The film ends when the elephant runs to the sea, catching Ernst, as Francis tries to bring him back.

The film features one original song, "My Heart Was an Island," written by Terry Gilkyson. Mother Robinson sings the song as she hangs new curtains in the family's treehouse. The song, however, is not heard in its entirety, as it trails off when the scene shifts to Ernst on the ground.

Upon the film's initial release, New York Times film critic Howard Thompson lauded it by writing, "it's hard to imagine how the picture could be better as a rousing, humorous and gentle-hearted tale of family love amid primitive isolation and dangers."[26] In his Family Guide to Movies on Video, Henry Herx wrote: "Nicely directed by Ken Annakin, much of the fun for children will come from the delightful and inventive conveniences the family builds and their relationships with the island's wildlife".[27] Tommy Kirk, who played Ernst, said it was the film he was most proud of.[28] The film holds an 84% approval rating at the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes,[29] and, as of late November 2023, a 7.1 rating at IMDB, the online database of information related to films and TV pograms.[30]

Viewing Swiss Family Robinson, one is riveted by its characters facing meaningful ethical challenges. What the creatives in this film did especially well was to have the lead character, the father (Thomas Mitchell), make an explicit and principled choice to put his family at risk by taking them across the globe to a new colony so that they could become better people. And then in an excellent complication, this choice terribly rebounds on him when they are marooned on a deserted island. Or does it?

I wish a greater number of producers, executives, directors, writers and publishers would focus more on the ideas, values and themes of their stories. To stress the point more specifically: It is the ideas in Swiss Family Robinson that make it a thought-provoking and inspiring film for children and adults. A family can and should watch this film together.

Animals are used as beasts of burden and made to work, and they suffer through some frightening sequences, neither of which are depicted in more contemporary family films. For example, while trying to make land, the Robinsons fight off sharks and successfully get them to back off by shooting at them, and moments later, they marvel at a turtle that winds up towing their heavy boat full of salvaged junk. Add in the drowning and flailing zebra, Francis attempting to violently trap an elephant, and two dogs brutally fighting off a tiger in a scene that goes on for way too long, and Swiss Family Robinson isn't the cute and innocuous movie adult watchers remember from their childhood. 2351a5e196
