Birth is a 2004 American psychological drama film co-written and directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Nicole Kidman, Lauren Bacall, Cameron Bright, Danny Huston, Arliss Howard, Peter Stormare, Ted Levine, and Anne Heche. The film follows Anna, who becomes convinced that her dead husband Sean is reincarnated as a ten-year-old boy.

Actress Nicole Kidman read the screenplay and wanted to do the film when she found out that Glazer was directing, as she loved his previous film, Sexy Beast.[6] She approached the director about doing the film. At first, he resisted because he felt that "her celebrity is so everywhere that I thought it could only hurt the delicate nature of this character".[1] However, he met with Kidman and realized that "she was ready to inhabit the role".[1] The more he talked to Kidman about her character, he would rewrite the script on weekends, tailoring it specifically for her.[3] To show Anna in mourning both externally and internally, Glazer gave her short hair, spare wardrobe and short, clipped speech.[6] The director explained Anna's appearance as "somebody who had sort of let all glamor go and sexuality go".[7] Kidman said that Glazer instructed her to do small, personal reactions. She found the character to be all-consuming so that she could not separate herself from the role. To research for the role, Kidman spoke to two friends who had lost their fathers and they talked about how it still affected them years after.[6]

However, Roger Ebert gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four and compared it to Rosemary's Baby saying, "Birth is less sensational and more ominous, and also more intriguing because instead of going for quick thrills, it explores what might really happen if a 10-year-old turned up and said what Sean says".[16] In his review for The New York Times, A. O. Scott praised Nicole Kidman's performance: "Without Ms. Kidman's brilliantly nuanced performance, Birth might feel arch, chilly and a little sadistic, but she gives herself so completely to the role that the film becomes both spellbinding and heartbreaking, a delicate chamber piece with the large, troubled heart of an opera."[17] Birth was placed at 96 on Slant Magazine's best films of the 2000s.[18] Writing in The Guardian in August 2010, film critic David Thomson included the film in his list of "10 lost works of genius".[19]

The film generated controversy due to a scene wherein Kidman shares a bath with Bright, both apparently naked.[1] In fact, Bright was never naked and the two were never even in the same room during the filming of the bath scene apart from one camera shot, and when this shot happened both wore special clothes that were not visible to the camera.[20] Glazer insists that the scene is not erotic or exploitative. "I can imagine that, before people see it, they might think it was salacious. But I knew it was never going to be that."[1]

At a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, Kidman addressed the controversy of her character kissing a boy: "It wasn't that I wanted to make a film where I kiss a 10-year-old boy. I wanted to make a film where you understand love."[21] Further controversy occurred at the festival when a journalist described Kidman as a "screen legend", to which her co-star Lauren Bacall replied, "She is a beginner".[21] Kidman downplayed Bacall's remarks and said, "I certainly don't feel like a big star in Hollywood".[21]

Complaints of the film's "cop-out" ending are questioned by Roger Ebert in his review, who notes: "There seem to be two possible explanations for what finally happens, but neither one is consistent with all of the facts."[16]

A Star Is Born is a 2018 American musical romantic drama film produced and directed by Bradley Cooper (in his directorial debut) with a screenplay by Cooper, Eric Roth and Will Fetters. It stars Cooper, Lady Gaga, Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott, and follows an alcoholic musician (Cooper) who discovers and falls in love with a young singer (Gaga). It is the fourth American adaptation of the story, after the original 1937 romantic drama and its 1954 and 1976 remakes. Principal photography began at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2017.

The film's soundtrack sold over six million copies worldwide and received a total of four Grammy Award wins out of seven nominations, including nominations for Song of the Year two years in a row. Its lead single "Shallow" is one of the world's best-selling singles of all time. For her acting and soundtrack contributions on A Star Is Born, Gaga became the first woman in history to win an Academy Award, Grammy Award, BAFTA Award and Golden Globe Award in one single year.

Previous remakes of the original 1937 film included the 1954 musical and 1976 rock musical. Furthermore, the Bollywood romance film Aashiqui 2 (2013) was inspired by A Star Is Born but was not a remake.[8] Development of a new adaptation dated as far back as the late 1990s with Will Smith the intended lead player.[9] However, Smith's participation was nixed by his decision to star in Ali.[9] In 2000, Jamie Foxx and Oliver Stone were rumoured to be seriously interested in remaking the movie,[9] with Foxx first seeking out R&B singer Aaliyah and then rising actor Paul Walker for the leading duo roles.[10] Lauryn Hill and Mariah Carey were also sought for the lead roles,[9] and Alicia Keys turned down an offer to play the female lead in the film.[11] Plans for the adaptation were shelved for several years.[12]

In January 2011, it was announced that Clint Eastwood was in talks to direct Beyonc in a third American remake of the film A Star Is Born (1937), with Bradley Cooper playing the male lead. However, the project was delayed on account of Beyonc's pregnancy.[13] In April 2012, writer Will Fetters told Collider that the script was inspired by Kurt Cobain.[14]

Over the course of the film's development, talks with Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Will Smith to play the male lead failed to come to fruition. Eastwood was interested in Esperanza Spalding to play the female lead.[15] Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Shakira, Janelle Mone, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Kesha were also considered for the lead female role. On March 24, 2015, Warner Bros. announced that Cooper was in final talks to make his directorial debut with the film. Beyonc was again in talks to join, though still unsigned.[16] In order to secure his first directorial commitment and in lieu of receiving an upfront salary, Cooper took a back-end deal in order to get the film made, resulting in a $39.9 million salary.[17]

Cooper revealed that originally he planned on only directing the film and did not want to star in it because he wanted to focus on directing. His first choice for the male lead was musician Jack White, but the studio rejected the idea.[18] It was then that Cooper agreed to star in the movie as well. A major issue in the development process was Warner Bros.' reluctance to deal with Jon Peters, who held the rights to the material dating back to his producing the 1976 blockbuster but had become a pariah due to his behavior. While the studio made a deal with him for the rights, they made sure his name was not listed in the credits (including those that were submitted for the Oscar nomination bids which the movie earned), and Bradley Cooper bluntly stated that a major reason his goal of having a happy and respectful set was met was that "Jon wasn't here."

Cooper became the male lead while in final talks to make his directorial debut at the end of March 2016.[19][20][21] On August 16, 2016, it was reported that Lady Gaga had officially become attached and the studio had green-lit the project to begin production early 2017.[22] On November 9, 2016, it was reported that Ray Liotta was in talks to join the film in the role of the manager to Cooper's character, though he ultimately was not involved.[23] On March 17, 2017, Sam Elliott joined the film,[24] with Andrew Dice Clay entering negotiations to play Lorenzo, the father of Lady Gaga's character.[25] Clay was reportedly selected over Robert De Niro, John Turturro and John Travolta.[26] Howard Stern was the first choice for Elliot's role but he passed on the role.[27] In April 2017, Rafi Gavron, Michael Harney, and Rebecca Field also joined the cast.[28] In May, Dave Chappelle was cast in the film.[29] In April 2018, it was announced that Halsey would have a small role.[30]

After seeing him perform at Desert Trip festival, Cooper approached Lukas Nelson (son of country music singer Willie Nelson) and asked him to help work on the film. Nelson agreed and wrote several songs, which he sent to the producers.[34] Nelson subsequently met Lady Gaga and began writing songs with her and she, in turn, provided backing vocals on two tracks on his self-titled 2017 album.[35] The soundtrack, performed by Gaga and Cooper, was released on October 5, 2018, by Interscope Records. The studio announced that the album "features 19 songs in a wide range of musical styles + 15 dialogue tracks that will take you on a journey that mirrors the experience of seeing the film."[36]

A Star Is Born had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2018.[37][38] The acclaimed movie also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival,[39] the San Sebastin International Film Festival, and the Zurich Film Festival in September 2018.[40][41] The film was theatrically released in the United States on October 5, 2018,[42] distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, after having initially been set for release on September 28, 2018, and then rescheduled to May 18, 2018, before being pushed back to October.[43][44] The studio spent an estimated $110 million promoting the film.[45]

Starting December 7, 2018, the film had a limited release in IMAX theaters across the United States and Canada.[46] On February 28, 2019, the film was re-released in more than 1,150 US theaters with twelve minutes of additional footage. Named as the special "encore" edition, it contained extended performances of songs like "Black Eyes" and "Alibi" from the soundtrack, an a cappella performance of "Shallow" by Gaga as well as her singing "Is That Alright?" during the wedding sequence of Ally and Jack. Extra footage also contained Cooper singing "Too Far Gone" in a recording studio, and Jack and Ally writing a song titled "Clover" together.[47] 2351a5e196
