Raging Phoenix (Thai:    ; translit: Jeeja Due Suai Du) is a 2009 Thai martial arts film starring Yanin "Jeeja" Vismistananda, in her second film performance. It is directed by Rashane Limtrakul, with martial arts choreography by Panna Rittikrai.

Backed up by his friends Pig Shit and Dog Shit (Nui Saendaeng and Sompong Lertwimonkaisom) the trio live on the beach, apparently, and save women from being kidnapped. Deu wants to join them, and eventually convinces Sanim and his friends to train her. She learns that Sanim has lost his fiance to the gang, and that they have been abducting women seemingly for a particular pheromone that certain women apparently excrete, and that she is one of them. Yeah, the whole thing is pretty stupid. But really the story is not the reason you buy into this film.

FINAL GRADE: (8) A good film that makes the supporting cast members look better than its star until the end of the film, but when the time comes Jeeja Yanin is more than up to the task. Oh yeah, the B-boy music is strangely addicting.

With bringing her back to their hideout, Sanim encounters some unexpected collateral. Deu meets Pig Shit (Nui Saendaeng) and Dog Shit (Sompong Lertwimonkaisom), two fellow fighters with an agenda. What Deu becomes so fascinated with is a drunken style of fighting (made up for the film) known as Meyraiyuth. With montage scenes and lots of drinking, Deu and the gang take on the Jaguar Gang, a bunch of thugs looking to kidnap women just like Deu for nefarious purposes.

invented kicks and finishing moves that always surprise me in these Muay Thai action films. When you see one of these you expect the same old stuff, but Panna Rittikrai always has something new up his sleeve.

Martial arts in movies have always been performance art, but this Thai actioner is the first film to combine martial arts with hip-hop dancing. It's so wild and over the top, I had to go with it. The film stars, in her second movie, Jeeja Yanin as a woman who is kidnapped by a group that harvests organs; she escapes, then agrees to go back and break the gang. Yanin's first film, "Chocolate," was an attempt by the producers who brought Tony Jaa to fame to discover a female Jaa. "Raging Phoenix" completes the job, with candy-colored visuals, infectious fight scenes (including an attack by Rollerbladers - with the emphasis on the blades) and all the silly plot you can handle. As with all Thai action films (it seems), it runs about 20 minutes too long, and Yanin needs to pack on a few more pounds to be more convincing in her fight scenes. Her athletic enthusiasm, however, is beyond reproach.

After blackmailing the group into training her in their art of Meyraiyuth (by threatening to destroy all their bottles of booze) she joins in with the ass-kicking, all the while uncovering more secrets about the trafficking and about her new companions.Raging Phoenix provides examples of: Action Girl: Deu develops into one over the first act of the film. By the end she's capable of taking down an entire gang by her lonesome, and defeats the trafficker's boss in a fierce one-on-one battle. The leader of the trafficking ring, London, is revealed to a muscular woman who easily takes down Deu in their first fight. Bittersweet Ending: The trafficking ring is taken down and Sanim's girlfriend Pai is saved. However, it's at the cost of Sanim's life. Boss Subtitles: When the main characters are introduced, the action pauses and their name flashes up on screen. Averted with Bull, whose name isn't revealed at first to keep his connection to Pig and Dog a secret. Confusion Fu: Dog and Pig explain that this is the reason they get drunk before kicking ass. Being drunk causes them to move around erratically, which in turn confuses and disorients their opponents. Cool vs. Awesome: Most notably, drunken Muay Thai dancefighting vs. drunken kung fu. Cross Counter: In the climactic battle, Deu and London both leap into the air and knee the other in the face. Deu is able to recover slightly quicker, which allows her to win the fight. Damsel in Distress: Sanim's girlfriend, Pai, was kidnapped by the trafficking ring, and saving her is Sanim's motivation for taking them down. Deu nearly became a damsel when the trafficking ring attempted to kidnap her. Sanim saved her in the nick of time, and afterward she takes a level in badass and becomes an Action Girl instead. Dance Battler: The protagonists' fighting style, Meyraiyuth, is loose and incorporates dance moves into it. This is most obvious in the fight where Pig and Dog are introduced, as their battling syncs up to the BGM. Darkest Hour: After Sanim dies, London manages to re-capture Deu after Pig, Dog, and Bull are beaten by her goons. The film seems to head for a sad ending, but Deu's determination is rekindled and she's able to take down London. Drunken Boxing: The fighting style of Meyraiyuth is what you get when you throw Muay Thai, Capoeira, and alcohol into a blender. Gargle Blaster: A drink so bad that just smelling it can sharpen the senses. Later in the film, everyone takes a swig of it as a way of apologising to each other. Heroic BSoD: Deu loses all will to fight and becomes lifeless after Sanim dies and London effortlessly defeats her. Fortunately, she recovers herself in time to take on and obliterate two Elite Mooks and London in sequence. Heroic Sacrifice: Near the end of the film, Sanim sacrifices himself and falls to his death so that Deu and Pai can continue living. It's Personal: Sanim, Dog and Bull want to bring down the trafficking ring because their girlfriends were killed/kidnapped by the traffickers. Little Miss Badass: Deu is a tiny girl with a pixie-like appearance and an energetic personality, but after learning Meyraiyuth she's capable of wiping the floor with her larger opponents. Rule of Three: The main gang, minus their leader Sanim, are known as Dog-Shit, Pig-Shit, and Bull-Shit. Swiss-Army Tears: The reason why the women were kidnapped is because their tears of sadness are used in a perfume that makes a man desire sex. Waif-Fu: The protagonist is a delicate young woman who learns the dance-battling style of Meyraiyuth, which she uses to take down men that are much bigger than her. Averted in the climatic battle between Deu and London. Not only is London a clearly muscular woman, but their fight is one of the most brutal and aggressive in the film.

An insatiably curious lil' kitten with admittedly odd tastes in film and music, addicted to spicy food and berry wine coolers.... generally playful but with a surprising fierceness when annoyed. But don't worry... she's had all her shots!

With "Red Cliff" and "Ninja Assassin" both opening for the holiday weekend, I had Asian action on the brain. Well okay, I always have Asian action on the brain. Anyway, here's a new Thai film called "Raging Phoenix" that mixes Drunken Muay Thai, break dancing, and parkour.

A friend of mine -- know my taste for Asian action -- introduced me to the latest film by Prachya Pinkaew and Panna Rittikrai, the director and action choreographer behind "Ong Bak," "Chocolate," and "The Protector." The film also reunites them with "Chocolate's" fem action star JeeJa Yanin. "Raging Phoenix" tries to have a plot and even tries to make it one with social significance. It uses the kidnapping of women in Thailand as a hook for a plot that essentially just sets up the need for a lot of fighting. What's cool here is the mix of Muay Thai (Thai kick boxing) with break dancing and parkour (extreme running). The result is exhilarating action. There's even Drunken Muay Thai to make the mix even more intoxicating. The trailer gives you a taste of the fun. This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for Asian action like "Raging Phoenix" and John Woo's "Red Cliff." They really accentuate the motion in motion pictures. Enjoy!

In a more perfect world, Thai martial arts films would have the equivalent of John Ford, or Vincente Minnelli, or at least another Prachya Pinkaew. What I mean by this is someone who knows exactly where to place the camera, so that when watching the film, there is no second guessing, at least from myself. It's not that Rashane is bad, as much as there were too many times when there seemed to me better choices to have been made in the framing of much of the action. While the fight scenes were never as visually incoherent as, for example, what Brett Ratner does with Jackie Chan in the Rush Hour movies, neither is there the clean, clear framing with minimal editing that Prachya has in the best moments of Ong-Bak or Chocolate.

And it's not that Rashane had a lack of visual ideas. What makes Raging Phoenix frustrating is that there are some very unique sets where the action takes place. Various abandoned locations - a small amusement park, an old, elaborate church, and the ruins of a building seemingly in the middle of nowhere are among the settings. One of the rooms in the villain's underground fortress is bathed in a phosphorescent blue. The only newish building in the film is a small, modern looking house by the beach, which I wouldn't mind calling home. The only weak spot is a CGI created pit, extremely large and deep, connected by several overlapping, rickety bridges made of wood and rope. It's only in what tangentially resembles the real world that there is a sense of danger.

Sanin is played by Kazu Patrick Tang. In the DVD supplement with some of the cast and crew discussing the film, Tang speaks in French. I was wondering if Luc Besson, with his frequent collaboration with Chinese and Thai martial artists, knew of Tang. As it turns out, Tang had a supporting role in Danny the Dog, released in the U.S. as Unleashed. In an elaborate fight scene, Tang demonstrates his proficiency with a combination of Parkour, hip hop dancing, and Muay Thai boxing against a team of guys on deadly powerskip devices with serious cutting edges, hopping around like a gang of malevolent kangaroos. Tang spent four years of doing nothing but training prior to the filming of Raging Phoenix. With the apparent retirement of Tony Jaa, Tang is another young man who could well be a new action movie star. e24fc04721
