Every film or play has a director, just as every military unit has a leader, Driver said. Also, in the Marine Corps, people are forced to be intimate with complete strangers in a short amount of time, and that's the same in films.

As a result of his own experience, Driver decided to create a venue for veterans who aspire to become actors. He founded Arts in the Armed Forces, a non-profit that provides free arts programming to U.S. active-duty service members, veterans, military support staff and their families worldwide.

"I thought, how great would it be to create a space that combine these two seemingly dissimilar communities that brought entertainment to a group of people that, considering their occupation, could handle something a bit more thought provoking than the typical, mandatory fun events that I remember being 'voluntold' to in the military," he said.

Humanitarian and disaster relief operations were also conducted by Marines during 1998 in Kenya, and in the Central American nations of Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala. In 1999, Marine units deployed to Kosovo in support of Operation Allied Force. Soon after the September 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., Marine units deployed to the Arabian Sea and in November set up a forward operating base in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In early 2005, the II Marine Expeditionary Force replaced I MEF in Iraq as the primary focus began to shift to partnership operations with the Iraqi Security Forces. Marine units continued to provide air and ground support to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Closer to home, the flexibility and responsiveness of the Navy/Marine team was exhibited during September and October when nearly 3000 Marines and sailors conducted search and rescue, humanitarian relief, and disaster recovery operations in Louisiana and Mississippi in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

In November the Stabat District Court found four defendants guilty of torturing to death two persons trafficked to work on a palm oil plantation in North Sumatra, and four others guilty of human trafficking. The victims had been held in cages on the property of Terbit Rencana, the head of Langkat Regency, which were discovered in January not long after the Corruption Eradication Commission arrested then Regent Terbit Rencana for graft. For more than 10 years, dozens of victims had been held in cages on the property and forced to work on his palm oil plantation, allegedly as part of an unofficial drug rehabilitation program. The North Sumatra Police named Rencana a suspect in the investigation but had not charged him as of November. The National Commission on Human Rights recommended police and the military further investigate the alleged role in the abuses played by members of the police and military.

Clarence Flaten was born August 27, 1910 in Hettinger, North Dakota, to parents Gunerius and Ollie (Evans) Flaten. In 1928 the family purchased a farm in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, where Clarence graduated from high school in 1929. Flaten enrolled in University of Michigan in 1934, earning his Bachelor of Science in Forestry in 1938 and his Master of Science in Forestry in 1939. After graduation, Flaten began working as a preparator at the Institute for Fisheries Research at the Michigan Conservation Department, where he developed maps and was in charge of still and motion photography. Flaten enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps (later U.S. Air Force) in 1942 after the U.S. entrance into World War II. As a Photographic Officer, Flaten was stationed in Mobile, Alabama (1942-1944), Dallas, Texas (base photographer, 1944-1945), and India (wing photographer, 1945-1946). Upon the completion of his service, Flaten returned to his position at the Institute for Fisheries Research, where he worked for another year.
