A Cinderella Story is a 2004 American teen romantic comedy film directed by Mark Rosman, written by Leigh Dunlap and starring Hilary Duff, Chad Michael Murray, Jennifer Coolidge, and Regina King. A modernization of the classic Cinderella folklore, the film's plot revolves around two internet pen pals who plan to meet in person at their high school's Halloween dance.

The film was released on July 16, 2004. While it was panned by critics, the film was a box office success, grossing $70.1 million against its $19 million budget, and inspired multiple straight-to-video films. Over the years, it has developed into a cult classic.[2]

Clifford Werber conceived a modernized adaptation of the Cinderella story due to its long-lasting appeal of being "the ultimate wish-fulfillment fantasy" with "an underlying message of empowerment."[3]

Roger Ebert wrote that A Cinderella Story "is a lame, stupid movie, but Warner Bros. is spending a fortune to persuade [young audiences] to see it and recommend it".[9] Other critics panned the plot as "simple, lazy storytelling"[10] and "a dull rehash of the old girl-meets-boy chestnut".[11] They noted that its attempts to modernize aspects of the source material were gimmicky and led to illogical plot elements, such as a cell phone being the film's glass slipper and Sam looking too pretty and cheerful for an outcast.[12][11][13] Some particularly felt the use of a perfect teenager as a social reject delegitimized the moral of any average person believing in oneself.[11][13]

In its opening weekend, the film grossed $13,623,350 in 2,625 theaters in the United States and Canada, ranking #4 at the box office, behind I, Robot, Spider-Man 2 and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. By the end of its run, A Cinderella Story grossed $51,438,175 domestically and $18,629,734 internationally, totaling $70,067,909 worldwide.[1]

A Cinderella Story was followed by five direct-to-video films, each presenting a separate modern-day version of the Cinderella story: The sequels use the themes and situations that also borrow from the Cinderella tale, but do not contain any characters from the first film. Unlike the first film, the sequels also include musical, dance and holiday event themes.

Upon completion, Valerian insists that she must first take her only friend and beloved pet pig, Jon Hamm, to the butcher. To subvert this request, Finley tries to leave Jon Hamm with her friend, Jerry, but he is temporarily on break; she is forced to sneakily take him with her to the movie set. This little pig is definitely my favorite character and brings a Babe element to the plot; he comes in clutch at the climax of the film. However, Jon Hamm initially ruins her chances at a role in the film, as he becomes loose and destroys the set.

This is far from an original film, but it is definitely a mindless break from the stressors of life. It is really hard not to smile at its cringey, yet sweet jokes. The movie is most likely targeted toward the younger pre-teen crowd, but millennial fans who have been following the films over the years will definitely enjoy it as well. Warner Bros. shared this film with me for free so I could review it, but I definitely would have happily checked it out either way. A Cinderella Story: Starstruck reaches for the stars in a digital release on June 29th and will be available on DVD on July 13.

The movies are not sequels of each other. Every movie has a different lead actress and lead actor. There are 6 movies, starring 6 different actresses. Hillary Duff, Selena Gomez, Laura Marano, Lucy Hale, Ashlee Hewitt, and Sofia Carson. There is no order for them because every movie is a different story line.

As an adult who has had to handle a probate, I think the hidden will aspect of the story is the only aspect I find hard to hand wave away. Who was his lawyer? Who previously had been listed as her guardian? That will was a legal document and would have been filed. That copy would have been one of several copies. The stepmother would have been in a better position to challenge the will and force the sale of the business.

As for books, one of my favorites is Cinderella and the Colonel by K.M. Shea. K.M. Shea is a self-published author, and some of her earlier books have a lot of typos that bug me, but her latest ones are excellent. Cinderella and the Colonel has some different takes on the story, and it ends up more about the reconciliation between countries and cultures than it does about finding true love (though that happens too. It is a fairytale retelling after all). It also has forgiveness of the stepmother/sisters, which is unusual.

As a fairly new young star who appealed to both children and teens, Duff was the perfect actress to play the movie's lead character, Sam Montgomery.

For a movie based on an iconic fairytale, the filming locations were crucial to telling the modernized story. From Sam's Tudor-style home, where she lives with her stepmother Fiona and her two step-sisters Brianna and Gabriella, to the castle-like lobby where Sam's school hosted the dance, A Cinderella Story has some memorable backdrops. While its setting isn't as magical as Walt Disney's animated Cinderella, there are still some incredible landscapes in A Cinderella Story.

One of the most essential locations in A Cinderella Story is the diner, as it's the place where Sam finally stands up to Fiona at the end of the film. Before Sam's father, Hal, dies in the Northridge Earthquake, he owns a diner called Hal's Diner. Sam is very close with the staff, especially Regina King's Rhonda, who acts as her fairy godmother throughout the movie.

The home has a very cottage-like appearance, making it an ideal fit for a film based on a fairytale. While Hal's version of the house is much more laidback, Fiona's renovation includes pink shutters and other pink details on the front of the home, including three flamingos by the front door. The real home looks a lot more like Hal's design and is located in St. Altadena, California.

A pretty minor location appears at the beginning of A Cinderella Story, as a montage reveals how Fiona and Hal met and fell in love. During a quick shot of Fiona and Hal getting married, a photographer prepares to take a family picture, and Fiona purposely drops her bouquet, knowing Sam will lean over to pick it up and be cut out of the photo. The wedding scene was filmed at City Hall at 100 N. Garfield Avenue in Pasadena, California.

At Sam's high school, North Valley High, she's unsurprisingly an outcast. She has one best friend named Carter and a secret pen pal who happens to be Austin Ames, the most popular guy in school. Unfortunately, he has a girlfriend named Shelby Cummings, who, as Sam suggests in the film, barely even knows who she is.

Scenes like Sam losing a parking spot in her old blue Mustang and nearly colliding with Austin's black Mercedes G Wagon were filmed at Monrovia High School in Monrovia, California. The high school was also the location used for Austin to host his search for Cinderella, and it's where Carter confesses that he's the guy Shelby unknowingly kissed at the dance. Most importantly, the iconic scene where Austin and Sam share a kiss in the rain was also shot on Monrovia High School's football field.

Sam later meets Austin on the dance floor but spends most of her time getting to know him outside before the two share a dance in the lit-up gazebo. The interior and exterior dance scenes were actually filmed in different locations. The exteriors were shot at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. Meanwhile, movie-locations.com states the interiors were shot in the lobby of the Los Angelos Theatre located at 615 South Broadway in downtown Los Angeles.

The San Fernando Valley is a special place for Sam, as she has so many fond memories with her dad there. At the start of A Cinderella Story, Sam mentions that the valley was her kingdom when she was growing up. There is a scene where she is sitting with her father on the hood of his blue Mustang, looking out at the valley. At the end of the film, Sam mirrors this moment with Austin.

The two visit the same location as Austin gives Sam back her phone, which she lost at the dance, while sitting on the hood of the same Mustang. MovieMaps states these scenes were filmed at Autry Overlook at 8601 Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles, California. The final scene in A Cinderella Story sees Sam and Austin driving away from the overlook in her Mustang, the same way Cinderella and Prince Charming ride off in a carriage at the end of Disney's Cinderella.
