Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, one of Korea's most popular —and wackiest—winter festivals, is held every year for three weeks at Hwacheon, where the river's ice reaches a solid 16 inches thick by January—ideal conditions for trout grabbing, according to SmarterTravel.com. The river, surrounded by snow-covered mountains, is known as the first in Korea to freeze over in winter.

Others made their way to the 492ft-wide frozen river and bobbed their fishing lines (plastic rods and bait can be purchased at the site) in and out of some 14,000 holes drilled into the ice and waited patiently on stools and mats. Many festival-goers can be seen jumping with joy when they make a catch, according to the Daily Mail.

The festival features many other winter activities, aside from ice fishing. Visitors can go ice sledding, explore snow tunnels and slides, enjoy ice sculptures and build snowmen in the 'snowman zone.'

As of Sunday, bookings for trips during the one-day holiday surged more than five-fold, with the Palace Museum in Beijing, Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province and Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Southwest China's Sichuan Province among the top destinations, according to data that domestic online travel agency Trip.com sent to the Global Times on Tuesday.

I'm a frequent contributor to the New York Times. I've written for the paper on everything from exclusives on new hotel openings such as the Crillon, in Paris, to breaking news travel stories like the immediate impact of hurricanes Maria and Irma on travel to the Caribbean. I also write for CNN.com, Bloomberg, Travel & Leisure and the New York Times Magazine. Contributing to Forbes.com is something of a homecoming for me: I was previously the site's full-time travel writer and am well versed in the world of luxury travel. I went to New York University's School of Journalism, but I believe that the best education for a travel writer is to...travel!

Pallop Saejew, who heads the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, recently told the Khaosod English newspaper that a survey of local businesses indicates domestic travel to the city is already down for this time of year.

Finally, because the Spring Festival Period is one of the week-long holiday periods in the People's Republic of China (the only other being National Day, Oct 1), many people choose to travel for pleasure around this time. Tourism in mainland China is reaching record levels, further adding to the pressure on the transportation system.

In 2012, the PRC government announced that national highways would be toll free for Golden Week, and as a result 86 million people traveled by road (13% increase compared to the previous year).[10] The same year, 7.6 million people traveled via domestic airlines, and 60.9 million people traveled via railway.[11]

There is also a greater risk for theft and fraud during the Chunyun season.[12][13] Passenger supervision and checks on luggage become stricter. The common belief in the safety of railway travel is undermined by the fact that many railway cars are severely overcrowded. Bus companies, in order to gain a bigger profit, overwork the bus drivers on irregular schedules, overloading people every round, causing a higher accident rate. Trains also face a problem with scheduling, as an overcrowded network cannot ensure the overall accuracy of train schedules, and some trains are habitually late hours at a time, cause unease and frustration with passengers. The government has taken to passing legislation to regulate late trains, and make a public notice and apology for late trains mandatory. e24fc04721
