A talented audiobook narrator makes for a memorable listening experience. Great audio performances elevate and enhance a book and pull you in, going beyond on-paper reading for an immersive event. I feel the same joy discovering an excellent narrator as I do when finding a new favorite author.

If a narrator has a long backlist of titles (books that are already published, or in this case, recorded), there are hours and hours of listening ahead of you. Services like Libro.fm, Audible, and other audiobook services allow you to search by narrator, and I make good use of this feature. Many narrators also have websites listing their notable works or, sometimes, their entire audiobook catalog.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this! I love listening to audiobooks while doing mundane chores. A narrator definitely makes or breaks the book! I am so excited to check out some of these new recommendations!

Julia Whelen is fantastic! And Patti Callahan Henry is one of my favorite authors so I will definitely check out the audio recommendation for her book listed here. Audio books are like theater and the narrator truly makes all the difference! Lucy Price-Lewis, Steve West and Cassandra Campbell are also fantastic narrators.

The first narrator I listened to and wanted to search their backlist was Amy McFadden. Easy to listen to and multitask audiobooks are my favorite. Really enjoyed The Overdue Life of Amy Bylar by Kelly Harms, Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson, Life and Other Near-Death Experiences & Woman Last Seen in Her Thirties by Camille Pagan.

I have been using Libby since Covid lockdowns, but just started using it for audiobooks. Such a better experience than the radio to get to work. Poet X was my first. But I have to mention that Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars herself) narrates The Thousand Dollar Tan Line by Rob Thomas and does each character uniquely. Very entertaining.

Parents need a good strategy for keeping everyone happy on a family road trip to prevent it from becoming a doomed voyage. Listening to audiobooks that both kids and adults enjoy is a great way to alleviate tedium and, best of all, create a shared family experience when played out loud.

As you may have noticed, the above list of family road trip audiobooks is geared towards elementary school kids and older. However, never fear, there are plenty of options for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners. Your best bet is to find a collection of short stories, such as the following:

The selection committee consists of nine members: four members appointed by ALSC; four members appointed by YALSA; a chair, whose appointment alternates between ALSC and YALSA divisions; and a consultant from the staff of Booklist magazine who works with audiobooks. The consultant may participate fully in all book discussions but may not participate in voting.

The youth divisions honor books and movies with awards, such as the Caldecott, Carnegie, Newbery and Printz, but there is no official ALA award for audiobooks, which constitute a fast growing area of usage in libraries.

Listening is an important skill to be both taught and learned. Children of this century live in a world where media is a dominant form of communication (25 million iPods sold last year), and imagination's greatest champion in this technological realm is the spoken word. Through the years our cultures have been nurtured and our customs passed on by storytellers--audiobooks carry on that tradition.

In addition, with all of the audiobooks available today, and with the increasing number being produced, we believe it is essential for ALSC and YALSA to provide the same level of support for this nonprint format that they have historically provided for print materials, by creating an annual award for the best audiobooks in the field. We believe that by doing so, ALSC and YALSA can not only assist their members to better serve their library patrons, but also raise the profile and standards of audiobooks by having those honored serve as models toward which all audio producers can aspire.

This award recognizes excellence by a producer or director for accomplishment and/or innovation in the production of an audiobook. The two winning titles must exemplify the highest standards of direction, narration, engineering, and technical achievement.

And with all of the mounds of advice out there for how to retain your equanimity under these circumstances, I want to offer up one additional strategy: listening to audiobooks, and particularly listening to those that will take you out of your world and actually make you laugh. e24fc04721
