edX was founded in May 2012 by scientists from MIT and Harvard.[5] Gerry Sussman, Anant Agarwal, Chris Terman, and Piotr Mitros taught the first edX course on circuits and electronics from MIT, drawing 155,000 students from 162 countries. In 2013 they partnered with Stanford and in June 2013 they reached 1 million students.[6] edx.org released as open source, creating Open edX.

Long story short. When logging in over HTTPS and using django-cookies-samesite config value DCS_SESSION_COOKIE_SAMESITE = "None" (which tutor is using and edx.org very much seems to be), login cookies (edx-logged-in, edx-jwt-cookie-signature, etc) are set with SameSite=None and Secure, as seen in openedx/core/djangoapps/user_authn/cookies.py:

Publisher is a companion to Studio. The topics in this section provide anintroduction to the Publisher tool and describe the Publisher process, from thetime when the course team creates a course to the time when the About page ispublished on edx.org.

If your goal is to create a course About page, you enter all requiredinformation in Publisher. EdX then creates an About page for your course runand publishes the About page on edx.org.

This course is one of five self-paced courses on the topic of Databases, originating as one of Stanford's three inaugural massive open online courses released in the fall of 2011. The original "Databases" courses are now all available on edx.org. This course provides an introduction to relational databases and comprehensive coverage of SQL, the long-accepted standard query language for relational database systems. Databases: Advanced Topics in SQL and Databases: OLAP and Recursion are follow-on courses to this course and can be taken in either order. Advanced Topics is a broad and practical course covering indexes, transactions, constraints, triggers, views, and authorization, while OLAP and Recursion is recommended for learners with specific interest in these topics.

edX, commonly referred to as edX.org or edx 2U, is an online learning destination, launched back in 2012 by Harvard University, the MIT and several highly ranked universities and partner institutions in the edx consortium. This initiative, which can be found at edx.org is now owned by 2U, and is the home of an outstanding catalog of over 3000 high quality online courses available for free and spanning hundreds of subjects. It reportedly serves more than 42 million learners worldwide.

As a result of the acquisition of edX by 2U in 2021, the Open edX platform transitioned from being a by-product of the edx.org initiative to be a more independent open source project, stewarded by a new entity called The Center for Re-imagining Learning Axim Collaborative.
