The privacy-focused search engine came under fire in May, 2022 after some tracking scripts from company partner Microsoft were found while using DuckDuckGo's browsers. In August of that same year, DuckDuckGo expanded its third-party protections to include scripts from Microsoft.

I just tested it again to be sure. With DDG as default browser in iOS Settings under DDG only Copy and Open is available in 1PW.

Going back in the same Settings under DDG to Safari as default, 1PW offers all three options, Copy, Open and Open in Safari.

I can't get onto any Cloudflare protected sites using the DuckDuckGo browser. It endlessly refreshes while Cloudflare is checking. Is there ANY WAY to contact DuckDuckGo or in some way make them aware of this?

Hi all, Just been having a play around with the DDG Browser for Android but found that compared to my usual browser app (Brave with DDG as default search engine) it doesn't appear to block both in line or pop-up ads.

ya maybe my post was unclear. I am using the mobile browser and it says the browser is not supported so i cant log in to the site. It shows all the posts but in a wierd format. i dont want to use edge or chrome so if duckduckgo can be supported as well it would be a huge help.

okay fixed it. For android versions 7,8,9 android web view is tied with google chrome, so to update it I had to update google chrome. Wish i did not had to do so since I hate the new card tabs for chrome, but now discourse works fine for duckduckgo. If anyone knows a way to downgrade chrome without affecting webview do message me

DuckDuckGo (DDG) is an American software company that offers a number of software products oriented towards helping people protect their privacy online,[5] most notably, a private search engine, a tracker-blocking browser extension, email protection, and app tracking protection.

DuckDuckGo was founded by Gabriel Weinberg and launched on February 29, 2008, in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.[2][9] Weinberg is an entrepreneur who previously launched Names Database, a now-defunct social network. Self-funded by Weinberg until October 2011, DuckDuckGo was then "backed by Union Square Ventures and a handful of angel investors."[9][10][11] Union Square partner Brad Burnham stated, "We invested in DuckDuckGo because we became convinced that it was not only possible to change the basis of competition in search, it was time to do it."[9][11] In addition, Trisquel, Linux Mint, and the Midori web browser switched to use DuckDuckGo as their default search engine.[12] DuckDuckGo gains revenue via advertisements and affiliate programs.[13] The search engine is written in Perl[14] and runs on nginx, FreeBSD, and Linux.[3][2][15] DuckDuckGo is built primarily upon search APIs from various vendors. Because of this, TechCrunch characterized the service as a "hybrid" search engine.[16][17] Weinberg explained the beginnings of the name with respect to the children's game duck, duck, goose. He said of the origin of the name: "Really it just popped in my head one day and I just liked it. It is certainly influenced/derived from duck duck goose, but other than that there is no relation, e.g., a metaphor."[18] DuckDuckGo was featured on TechCrunch's Elevator Pitch Friday in 2008,[16] and it was a finalist in the 2008 BOSS Mashable Challenge.[19]

In July 2010, Weinberg started a DuckDuckGo community website (duck.co) to allow the public to report problems, discuss means of spreading the use of the search engine, request features, and discuss open sourcing the code.[21] The company registered the domain name ddg.gg on February 22, 2011,[22] and acquired duck.com in December 2018,[23][24][25] which are used as shortened URL aliases that redirect to duckduckgo.com, and is also used as the domain for their e-mail protection service.[26][27][28]

At its keynote speech at WWDC 2014 on September 18, 2014, Apple announced that DuckDuckGo would be included as an option for search on both iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite in its Safari browser.[36][37][38] On March 10, the Pale Moon web browser, starting with version 24.4.0, included DuckDuckGo as its default search engine, as well as listed it on the browser's homepage.[39] In May 2014, DuckDuckGo released a redesigned version to beta testers through DuckDuckHack.[40] On May 21, 2014, DuckDuckGo officially released the redesigned version that focused on smarter answers and a more refined look. The new version added many new features such as images, local search, auto-suggest, weather, recipes, and more.[41]

On January 23, 2018, DuckDuckGo revamped its browser extension and mobile app in an effort to keep Internet users safe "beyond the search box". The revamped extension and app include a tool for rating websites based on their use of encryption and ad-tracking networks as well as the ability to block ad-tracking networks. The extension also provides Terms of service summaries from Terms of Service; Didn't Read.[48]

In May 2022, a report from Bleeping Computer by security researcher Zach Edwards found that DuckDuckGo's web browser allowed Microsoft's trackers to continue running while visiting non-DuckDuckGo websites, contrary to Google and Facebook trackers, which were blocked. In response, Weinberg said that "unfortunately, our Microsoft search syndication agreement prevents us from doing more to Microsoft-owned properties. However, we have been continually pushing and expect to be doing more soon." He also said given that most browsers "don't even attempt" to block third-party scripts from loading, users would still be safer than on other browsers.[60][61] In August 2022, DuckDuckGo began blocking Microsoft's trackers, saying that the policy preventing them from doing so no longer applied.[62][63]

The DuckDuckGo private browser is a privacy-oriented web browser available for iOS and Android; it uses WebView (Blink) on Android and WebKit on iOS. DuckDuckGo Private Browser automatically blocks web trackers, and upgrades insecure HTTP connections to HTTPS when possible.[113][114] The Android version has a feature called App Tracking Protection, which when enabled blocks trackers in other Android applications.[115][116] DuckDuckGo Private Browser is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license.[117]

The browser has a feature which is called Duck Player that allows users to watch YouTube videos without being target of advertisements and tracking cookies.[123] Moreover, the app contains an automatic cookie consent tool for popups and support for the Global Data Privacy Control.[124]

In May 2022, it was discovered that tracking scripts by Microsoft products like Bing and LinkedIn are not blocked by the browser.[125] DuckDuckGo's founder and CEO explained it by noting that the company was "currently contractually restricted by Microsoft" due to their use of Bing as a provider of results in DuckDuckGo search. This meant the browser could not block Microsoft scripts.[126] In August 2022, however, the company announced that they would block Microsoft trackers in its browsers.[127]

As I've told you countless times before, my mobile browsing combo is Firefox + UBlock Origin (UBO).That seems to be the only truly complete solution that matches my taste and needs. Occasionally, thoughI go about testing alternative browsers, just to see whether there is anything that could potentiallyoffer similar results. Reasonable choice is not a bad thing.

So far in my search, I only briefly had exposure to Safari + Adblock Plus (ABP), and Firefox Focus, also as an extension for said browser. I don't have enough experience to say more. Then, I did a propertest of the lightweight Firefox Focus browser, and the results were okay, but not stellar. Thetracking protection was decent, but the ad blocking was not. This brings me to DuckDuckGo. 'Tis a search engine, and I reviewed it several times in the past.Seems quite alright. And there's also a mobile browser. So let's see if perhaps this one can be a solidoption for those not keen on the stupidities of the modern Internet.

I installed the DuckDuckGo (DDG) browser on my Samsung A54 and started exploring. Right from the start, thebrowser tries to "give you a hand", that is you're sort of "forced" to undergo a tour-tutorial kind ofthing, whereby the browser tells you about the Web, its dangers, and what DDG does to preventthose.

This question has probably come up in your head. After all, if search engine = browser, thentechnically, that's Chrome, or Edge. And that's not something nerds and privacy-savvy people tend tolike. Why would, then, DDG be any different in this regard? Now, the search engine does a good job atreducing tracking and such, so is there really a need for a wrapper shell, ergo a whole browser?

The answer is, on paper, maybe. DuckDuckGo advertises itself as a privacy browser. It's meant tostop tracking, upgrade insecure Web links (HTTP to HTTPS), and give you a clean, fresh Internetexperience. Now, it uses the WebView engine in Android (similar to what the operating system uses todisplay its settings and alike), so in a way, you could say, it's Chromium-based. There are otherbrowsers of this ilk that aim to give the end user true privacy and block trackers and ads, but by andlarge, Firefox stands out as a separate project, with its own engine, implementation and mission. Keepthat in mind for now. Now, let's go back to the review.

DDG also asked if I wanted to set it as my default browser. I chose no. And then I went into thesettings to see what the browser does. There are some clever tricks under the hood. You can set it as aproxy so it filters and blocks tracking for your other apps. App VPN, if you will. You can alsoinstruct it to try to automatically detect cookie banners and dismiss them. But that also depends onhow the banners are designed, because I assume some may have an aggressive opt-out rather than opt-indefaults.

A somewhat confusing part of the experience is that you can separately configure your DuckDuckGosearch engine, with all its different options and settings. Navigating these was a little bit tedious,as there's so much, and you sort of expect all of that to be an integral part of the browserexperience. And then, you also wonder is it possible to use other search engines if you like? And ifso, what's the point then? In the search settings, I also noticed that Advertisements is set to On. Notsure how these align with the whole privacy thing. 2351a5e196
