After crafting a sword holding it in your main-hand for around 2 seconds it will transform into a blade, this will also give you a crow which you can right click to get the coords of certain structures, and demon slayer armor, it is in fact better than netherite defense wise (though you wont get that extra knockback resistance). The type of blade the sword changes into is random and all swords will change into this same type as well. Think of it like the type of sword is matched to you as a player instead of the sword itself. However the type you have will change randomly after death or (from what I've gathered) a certain amount of time passes, this is not however a dependable method as currently the amount of time needed is unknown and could be changed in the future as it feels almost more like a bug than a feature. All swords also scale with the leveling system (ranks) with strength making the breathing along with the normal attacks do more damage.
There are however other swords that aren't obtainable through the base nichirin sword, these are only obtainable through: cheats, creative mode, or trading with a swordsmith. In order to trade you first need a special ore only found on Mount Yoko, which is called Rare scarlet ore, 2 are needed to get a special nichirin blade. The normal ore needs an iron pick or better to collect with the rare ore needing at least diamond.
These blades are stronger than the regular variants doing more dmg and sometimes having an extra move or two. To actually trade the ore you need to find a swordsmith and right click him with the 2 rare scarlet ore.
The main sword breathing types are: Wind, Water, Flame, Sun, Thunder, Moon, and Mist and of which are obtainable via the normal nichirin blades random type selection. All basic types do 6.5 base attack dmg with the breathing dmg strengthening through leveling up as a demon slayer.
