When running the installer, I attempted to deselect as many install options as possible. However, selecting the serial driver automatically selected other packages, such as VISA, etc, which could not be deselected without also deselecting the driver...

Is it possible to uninstall or disable the other services and so on wihtout losing the driver functionality? As a dev machine, I try to keep the PC as clean as possible, even so there are still quite a number of services and updaters and debug servers and etc that run so keeping these to a minimum is desirable. (for PC startup time, CPU time, RAM usage, interference with other programs [eg other VISA providers], accidental interference from locally compiled programs, etc)

When you go through the installtion you can check what's going to be installed because it will have a green tick next to it. When I run through the installation procedure I can cick on VISA and select "Do not install this feature". You will be able to control what's installed through this method.

It will not allow me to deselect all features of VISA without also deselecting the NI-Serial 3.9 option. These items under VISA do not even allow the "Do not install this feature" option, as shown in the image below.

If I select do not install this feature for NI-Serial 3.9, only then can I select do not install for the entirity of VISA. But once I subsequently select install this feature for NI-Serial, the VISA features are automatically added back in.... Gah!

I note that even though I have uninstalled the NI software, NiSerU remains in my system32 drivers (am on 64-bit though?) although windows plug&play driver search fails and the device shows up as an unknown device in windows device manager.

I've looked at the NI-Serial installer and it seems that if I select the core elements that you will need the install is around 21 MB. The VISA driver is designed to be installed as the package and as individual elements that are hardware specific. 21MB shouldn't make any difference to your PC's performance and it may cause issues at a later date if the full VISA package.

I originally started developing with the LPC2368 beta unit on a Windows XP machine. All was working fine with the Windows serial port driver. When the new (current) driver was released, I started using that and it wored fine. I then added a Vista machine to my office. I then loaded the new drivers onto the Vista machine and all worked fine.

I then tried to run the LPC1768 on my XP machine, and again found I had to re-load the Windows Serial Port Driver. When I did, Windows reported that there was a problem and could not start the serial port driver. I tried re-installing it several times, both from the website as well as from a local drive copy. Finally, I went back to my LPC2368 mbed. Re-installed drivers, and everything works fine. Going back to the LPC1768, it fails. It always says the driver could not start. I have uninstalled, re-installed, etc., but to no avail.

I wonder if this is some hangover from the old driver getting picked up when you put in a new device. However, we tested this all very thoroughly, including re-installing and upgrading, so it feels like a strange interaction/history thing.

If all looks in order, I'd then try un-installing both of these drivers (serial/composite), selecting to remove the software. But then also check if you disconnect/reconnect, that an old serial driver is not recognised. If it is, remove that too using the same process. Do this for both boards and you'll be basically back to scratch. Probably worth a reboot to ensure windows is not holding anything, then try re-installing.

Please note down every step you do if possible. We haven't seen a problem yet (apart from a problem downloading the driver mentioned in ), so capturing the process may help if anyone else gets a similar result.

Phil suggested it could be that windows is trying to allocate it to a COM port that is already in use. That would cause it to fail with Code 10. It seems sometimes Windows gets an inconsistency in it's registration of what has already been allocated.

I then tried to run a program that writes out to the port. This program works on the Vista machine (with either the LPC1768 or the LPC2368, as well as on the XP machine (but only with the LPC2368). SO, while I don't get the Windows error, the serial coms doesn't work on the XP machine with the LPC1768.

Sounds like the LPC1768 on XP is still coming in on some low numbered port, and I'm worried there may be a clash still if windows is confused. With the LPC1768 plugged in to XP, try changing the COM port to e.g. COM25 or some other higher one. Then unplug-replug and check it comes in OK (i.e. on COM25, and not code 10). Then (re)start teraterm and see if you get life!

For sanity, it might also be worth ensuring the program on the mbed really is running - e.g. flashing an LED at the same time. This would confirm e.g. the wrong image hadn't ended up on the wrong board!?! But as you have had the board working with Vista, it is unlikely to be this. And checking teraterm is restarted.

The good news is...I have it working. I had moved the port to many places, but had to keep it between COM1 and COM16, as Terraterm only goes up to port 16. I finally chose COM9, and it works fine now. I am not sure why. The LPC2368 works fine on COM3, but when the LPC1768 was on that one, it didn't.

I have a problem with Windows not recognizing one of my 3 mbed units as a serial device. It works okay otherwise (CAN functions, SPI functions, analog in functions, pwmout functions, lED's flash...). Tried all the changing of ports, swapping over of usb leads, rebooting of machine, running just one mbed, or two (my normal configuration as I'm working on CAN bus controlled lighttubes for an art installation) or three even, but one of them (always the same one) just is never recognized - is there anything more I can try (other than what's on this page) or do I have a faulty unit?

Dave, try this method. It's probably not your case since you do have mass storage working but just in case...

Also, open Device Manager, choose View-Devices by connection, and check whether you have this kind of picture:

Once the driver for the USB dongle is installed, it is possible to uninstall DriverMax8 from Add Remove Programs. Although you will need to manually delete c:\program files(x86)\Innovative Solutions since the DriverMax uninstaller is sloppy.

The actual driver is Svk2pl64.sys it is available from the Microsoft Update Catalog here:

=bad0b774-dce2-483e-a17e-1a7dc733e7d3 but you will need to use IE9 for this link or Chrome. It will come down as a cab file, extract from there then right-click the unknown device in device manager and install it. It is a Vista driver with both 32bit and 64 bit versions and should install in win 7/8/10. The actual chip is a Prolific chip with a modded USB ID you may be able to force-install an older Prolific driver on it.

Hi, I recently had the driver issue with a Prolific USB to serial cable on windows 10, this website proved to be very informative -usb-to-serial-fix-official-solution-to-code-10-error Apparently the info there is sourced from I hope this heIps

I have some problem with set PG/PC interfaces. I have computer with win 10, and on this comp i have vmware virtual system win 7 64. I installed step 7 pro sr1 and sp1, sp2, sp3, sp4 and hf11 on virtual machine. Computer don't have hardware com. I used conwerter usb to rs232. I tried two ways for connection virtual rs232 to virutal machine. First is in settings of virt. machine i remove port com, and after start machine i connected usb divice and in divice manager appeared vitual port com. Second way was that i add com port to virual machine and let use phisical port of nativ system. In nativ system i instaled converter and it apeared as com 3. Problem is that i dont have PCAdapter for eg. MPI or PROFIBUS or AUTO on my set PG/PC interfaces and i can't connect to PLC with MPI protocol.

PCAdapterMPI is connected to computer thruogh usb RS232 converter because i want to use rs232 PCAdapter not on usb. In windows there is virtual com because driver of converter create it. Step7 is instaled on virtual system win7 64bit (machine vmware). In set PG/PC interfaces there is no option for PCAdapterMPI.

System its a bit complicated because its win7 64 as virtual system on win 10. Computer don't have hardware com thats why i want to use converter usbRS232. problem is that there is no option in setPG/PC interfaces "PCAdapter.MPI"

At the moment you see the port (com3) within the device-manager, the drivers should work. (Some minutes after connecting the XGS via USB windowsupdate installs the drivers for me)

38400 is the speed i used too. After hitting the keyboard, I see something from the device.

The XG is running? You are able to ping to or through the XG?

In response to your questions:

The XG is running? You are able to ping to or through the XG?

The XG is running, its LEDs indicators are OK and we have some internal servers wich we access from the WAN through the Sophos that are currently available.

BUT... now the terminal is not regonizing the admin password (its the same I always use to log in as admin at the webadmin console). Do I have to use another password for at the console terminal? Any advice?

We just got two new XGS firewalls (delivered with 18.5.0 GA). I couldn't get a console connection on either. Upgraded to 18.5.2 and both connect fine. Also note, the actual port number may be different on your computer. Even on the same laptop, one of the XGs came up as COM3, the other XG came up as COM7.

Hi,

I regularly use a laptop to configure several APC smart-UPS via command line and putty. Up until a week ago the laptop was windows 7 starter edition. I have since wiped this and put Windows 7 Enterprise and reinstalled all the drivers and necessary software. However since this reinstall I am unable to connect to any APC UPS.

I've tried various drivers for the USB-serial adapter. It is a Belkin F5U103V. The odd thing is that I can connect to Cisco switches using the same adapter so there isn't a problem with the driver as far as I can tell.

The serial settings I am using are 38400, 8, 0, 1, XON XOFF.

I'm just getting no response in the putty window after initialising connection. Have tried pressing enter several times to jog it along.

I realise that this isn't an APC issue as such, but I wondered whether anyone else had found a solution to this. Failing that I'm going to have to reinstall windows 7 starter edition and try again with that.

Cheers in advance.
