Two car companies, Waymo and Cruise, want to expand driverless taxi service in San Francisco and other U.S. cities. But as they seek regulatory approvals, some officials are raising concerns about erratic driving behavior. (AP Video/Terry Chea) (April 5)

Cruise already has been charging people for driverless rides in less congested parts of San Francisco during night-time hours since last June. Waymo has been giving free driverless rides in a broader swath of the city while awaiting clearance to begin charging passengers in robotic vehicles that Google secretly began working on 14 years ago.

Both Cruise and Waymo recently announced their driverless fleets each have covered more than 1 million miles without a major accident. But their robotaxis also have experienced nagging problems in San Francisco that have caused traffic headaches and other nuisances that threaten to inconvenience people or, worse, block emergency vehicles rushing to a fire or other urgent calls for help.

Meanwhile, dozens of other technology companies and automakers have joined in a race to develop self-driving car technology at a collective cost of more than $100 billion. Their ultimate goal is to make money off robotic drivers that are safer and less expensive than human drivers. Robotaxis could also lower prices for passengers, although Vogt believes consumers may be willing to pay more for rides without a stranger behind the wheel.

That optimism is in sharp contrast to the disheartening experience of another storied automaker, Ford Motor, which paid $1 billion in 2017 to acquire driverless startup Argo AI, only to shut down the division last October and swallow a $2.7 billion loss after failing to find a buyer for the technology.

A fundamental goal in cancer research is to understand the mechanisms of cell transformation. This is key to developing more efficient cancer detection methods and therapeutic approaches. One milestone towards this objective is the identification of all the genes with mutations capable of driving tumours. Since the 1970s, the list of cancer genes has been growing steadily. Because cancer driver genes are under positive selection in tumorigenesis, their observed patterns of somatic mutations across tumours in a cohort deviate from those expected from neutral mutagenesis. These deviations, which constitute signals of positive selection, may be detected by carefully designed bioinformatics methods, which have become the state of the art in the identification of driver genes. A systematic approach combining several of these signals could lead to a compendium of mutational cancer genes. In this Review, we present the Integrative OncoGenomics (IntOGen) pipeline, an implementation of such an approach to obtain the compendium of mutational cancer drivers. Its application to somatic mutations of more than 28,000 tumours of 66 cancer types reveals 568 cancer genes and points towards their mechanisms of tumorigenesis. The application of this approach to the ever-growing datasets of somatic tumour mutations will support the continuous refinement of our knowledge of the genetic basis of cancer.

After a red light camera photograph is taken, the vehicle's registered owner will receive a citation in the mail. The citation will state when and where the violation occurred. It will include a photo of the vehicle in the intersection, a close-up of the driver, and the vehicle's license plate. It will also include instructions about what to do next, including what to do if you, the registered owner, is not the person pictured behind the wheel.

Upon receipt of the documentation, the agency will review it and issue a citation to the person that has been identified as the driver. The citation in your name will not be dismissed until the agency has received the completed identification form and the required additional documentation.

Upon receipt of the documentation, the agency will review it and issue a citation to the person that has been identified as the driver. The citation in the company's name will not be dismissed until the agency has received the completed identification form. This process may take eight to 12 weeks. It is important to note that once the dismissal process has started, no additional penalties will incur.

The other car struck the woman and she rolled off its side and into the path of the driverless taxi, which was carrying no passengers, and ran her over, stopping and pinning her to the ground with its rear axle and tire over a leg, according to video and a photo of the woman under the car taken by a witness that was provided to The Chronicle. Police said the driver who first struck the pedestrian fled the scene and that authorities were looking for the car and driver.

After six-and-a-half hours of public comment, the commission voted 3-1 to permit the two companies to expand their driverless car operations, enabling them to charge passengers for driverless rides without a human safety driver present, at all hours.

Public safety: In 2021, an average of nearly 12 people died every day in California from vehicle collisions. In defense of self-driving cars, a representative from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, an orthopedic surgeon and bicycling enthusiasts argued that roads will be safer as human error-led accidents will decrease. Recalling incidents of harassment and discrimination, women and LGBTQ+ community members also pointed out the personal safety benefits of driverless cars.

But one woman with mobility issues recalled how a driver helped her get in and out of her wheelchair at the airport, and asked how a robotaxi could do the same. Another raised concerns about the lack of accessibility for elderly passengers not familiar with the technology.

Economy and inequality: At times, the hearing put the very soul of San Francisco on trial. Asking commissioners to reject fear and embrace innovation, SEIU Local 87 union members, software engineers, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and others argued that driverless cars would create more jobs and revitalize the struggling city.

The incident happened on July 13 on Mission Street near 7th Avenue in the city's SoMa District. The delivery driver had just run into a Square Pie Guys restaurant to pick up his order when his car was stolen, according to witness Ricci Wynne.

The San Francisco resident and social media personality said he was doing an interview with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan about the city's crime issues when he saw a Prius traveling in reverse with the driver's side door open.

"Square Pie Guys is actually a very popular pizza here in the Bay Area right now, so a lot of times the Uber Eats drivers or the DoorDash drivers are kind of lined up there waiting for their delivery to be ready," said Wynne. "So I think they're kind of like brothers in arms, if you will. So when they seen one of their coworkers getting robbed for their car, I felt like they had empathy for him."

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today approved Resolutions granting additional operating authority for Cruise LLC and Waymo LLC to conduct commercial passenger service using driverless vehicles in San Francisco. The approval includes the ability for both companies to charge fares for rides at any time of day.

The requirements for the Resolutions approved today were established in a CPUC Decision adopted in 2020. This Decision mandates that autonomous vehicle (AV) companies submit an Advice Letter to enter the market as a passenger carrier using driverless vehicles or to make significant alterations to their current driverless passenger service, particularly those affecting passenger safety measures. The CPUC evaluated the Cruise and Waymo Advice Letters to ensure they met the licensing requirements set forth in the Decision, including passenger safety measures.

In an effort to improve street safety for all road users, the SF Bicycle Coalition has begun training professional drivers with large fleets that drive through San Francisco. We are currently reaching out to a variety of organizations including: rideshare companies, companies with large vehicles like trucks and delivery vans and shuttle operators. If you are interested in having us come out to train your drivers, please fill out our request form.

The SF Bicycle Coalition coordinated with the SFMTA to develop a Large Vehicle Urban Driving Safety Program, including a free video that is available to all companies employing large vehicle drivers. The SF Bicycle Coalition helped to develop the training standards and video curriculum.

Experience: 1. Two years of verified experience as a truck driver using heavy construction equipment or other trucks over 26,000 pounds, such as winch trucks, semi-trailers, sweepers, multiple-unit tractor mowers, dump trucks, or other construction vehicles with power take-off units and/or lift gates.

2. A good driving record. An applicant will be considered a negligent driver (and therefore not qualified) if his/her driving record shows six or more violation points in the last twelve months, or eight or more violation points in the last twenty-four months, or ten or more violation points in the last thirty-six months. ff782bc1db
