Although I have the drivers on a driver CD that came with the adapter I wanted to go ahead and look for a more up-to-date driver. I first had a look on the StarTech website for the drivers which told me a) the original chipset manufacturer (Realtek) and b) the chipset model (RTL8153). Armed with this information I then had a look on the Realtek website an immediately found a more up to date driver (10.13 vs 10.10). As I explained in my previous post, you almost always find the latest drivers from the original chipset manufacturer.

Driver updates for Windows, along with many devices, such as network adapters, monitors, printers, and video cards, are automatically downloaded and installed through Windows Update. You probably already have the most recent drivers, but if you'd like to manually update or reinstall a driver, here's how:

I recently needed an Ethernet adapter for my laptop, which has USB and WiFi (of course) but no Ethernet. Somebody offered me an Apple USB-to-Ethernet adapter. I figured Windows would offer the driver automatically, after which I could use the computer in places where only wired networks were available.

I did a little more hunting online and found this link to a blog that said they'd found the driver for the chipset in the adapter, and convinced it to work. I followed a variant on their instructions, and it worked for me too. Here are the steps I used:

My Wifi adapter suddenly disappeared after a restart. Now it does not appear in the device manager. There is no trace of a Wifi adapter whatsoever left in my laptop. All of this happened over night when the laptop was in shutdown state. I tried installing drivers but even that did not work. I tried to run Ubuntu on a USB to check and found no trace of a Wifi adapter even on Ubuntu. Ethernet works fine but keeps refreshing itself every 10-15 minutes. I've tried restarting the system several times and that is not working. Please suggest a solution to this problem.

I continue to look thru the posts on this forum to see if anybody is making progress on the recent wireless connectivity issue and I just saw this:

the only way to fix it on the as of now new a6 7310 notebook is as follows- TYPE "device manager" into windows (10) search bar- SCROLL to "network adapters"-SELECT "realtek rtl8723be''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' wifi adapter" (which is the route cause of the problem)-RIGHT CLICK and "update drivers" use the internet to find and auto install option and thats it.

As I have already mentioned, there is no Wifi adapter in the list of available network adapters. It disappeared after a restart as mentioned earlier. Please try to provide the solution to the problem. I have also tried the HP Support Assistant app troubleshooting and that does not help the cause at all.

Network settings such as adapter settings, services settings, the logon setting, the desktop interaction setting, and networking services settings enable you to use your computer to connect to a network. If these settings are incorrect, network connectivity issues can occur.

Thanks for the quick response. I went in and deleted the one phantom adapter that I had (my previous CT adapter). I then uninstalled the I210-T1 adapter and rebooted. I dont have any VLANs or Teams and the instructions did not address the miniport adapters so I left those. When I tried the driver install again I received the same error as above. However, that install did (seem to) reinstall the default I210-T1 driver with an older version. After reconnecting my network, I updated the default driver to the newer version (shown above) via the device manager search for a Updated version function.

Is your reference to one on those shown or something else. Incidentally, when doing the install discussed in my prior post, I was disconnected from the network. The default driver reappeared in the device manager immediately after displaying the error message during the Intel driver install. It either had in on my local machine or got it from the v24.1 install download.

Yes, that worked. Thanks much. I will say however, following your instructions closely, the uninstall of the "default" I210-T1 adapter never did stay uninstalled across a reboot. After doing steps 1 - 4 and rebooting (#5), the default I210 adapter again appeared in device manager. This time, when I went to uninstall it, there was no check box to delete the adapter, just the uninstall button. I did the uninstall and rebooted a 2nd time. Again the default adapter was back, so I did the uninstall (no "delete" check box) without rebooting and proceeded with the install of the downloaded driver package. It worked fine, and the device manager shows a driver version 12.18.9.1, dated 6/13/2019. The key seemed to be the uninstall of the Intel Network Connections in the Apps and Features section of the Windows settings.

If you need to run OpenVPN on Windows Vista/7 64-bit you have to use signed TAP drivers. Unless you sign them yourself, you need to extract drivers from an existing OpenVPN installer. See below for instructions.

Basically what happens when you install the TAP-Windows driver is that you get a new network adapter that shows up in your network control panel. You right click on the TAP adapter and set the TCP/IP properties, i.e. IP address and netmask. Then you rename the TAP adapter icon to something like "my-tap" and reference it using the --dev-node option in OpenVPN.

If you're still having issues installing the tap-windows driver, you should try installing it on another computer. If installation to another computer works, it's highly likely the problem is in your system, not in the OpenVPN/tap-windows installer itself.

You can further debug tap-windows installation issues by looking at the common log file for all Windows driver installations, which on Windows 7 is normally located in C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log. If you're filing a bug report, you should attach the logs for the tap-windows installation part to the bug report.

One of the most accurate ways to benchmark network performance on a LAN is by using iPerf . To more effectively benchmark network adapter performance, it is best to establish a point-to-point connection between two PCs, rather than connecting through a router or switch.
