"Drip" is a song recorded by American rapper Cardi B, featuring American hip hop trio Migos. It was written by the artists alongside Joshua Cross, with production handled by Cassius Jay and Nonstop Da Hitman.[1] The song was released by Atlantic Records on April 4, 2018, as the first promotional single from Cardi B's debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy (2018)[2][3][4] and was later sent to Australian radio on April 6, 2018.[5]

The song was made available for digital download alongside the reveal of the album's full track listing.[6] 2 days later, it was sent to Australian radio.[5] "Drip" is a groove-heavy trap song that features "slinky production and a pulsating trap beat".[7][8] Described as "a blinking, Atlanta-style track full of hi-hat tics and tinny synth melodies",[9] it "chugs along on looped flutes and Simon-like synth blips".[10] Lyrically, the artists hit back at critics who have attacked them.[11][12][13] The song's beat was originally used for an unreleased Young Thug and Future song titled "Upscale" which also featured Quavo.[14]

"Drip" received mixed reviews from music critics.[15] Kevin Goddard of HotNewHipHop deemed the song "an aggressive and braggadocios record".[16] Shaad D'Souza of Noisey wrote that the song "makes a meal out of some pretty standard Migos trap", calling it "a return to the hard-as-nails Cardi that we're used to" despite being "pretty standard Migos fare". She complimented Cardi B's ability to make good use of her only verse.[17]

Sheldon Pearce of Pitchfork opined that the song marks a return to Cardi B's initial mindset that made her popular, describing it as "a self-assured, swag-obsessed rap parade packed with quotables". While it lacks punchiness and slickness compared to "Bodak Yellow" and "Bartier Cardi", he wrote that "the song does exude supreme self-confidence, and with Cardi that's often half the victory".[10] Charles Holmes of MTV News wrote: "If 'Be Careful' was Cardi at her most vulnerable, then 'Drip' finds the rapper reclaiming her confidence."[18]

The Drifters released the original version of the song as a single in 1958. It reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] The Drifters' version was produced by Leiber & Stoller and arranged by Ray Ellis.

Dion's version of the song reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963.[2] The back-up group on the song is the Del-Satins, and the guitarist was Al Caiola. The song was produced and arranged by Robert Mersey.[3]

Does anyone else remember a song from their childhood (23 over here) where the tune sounds exactly like the beginning of 'Drip Like Me' by Kenndog? I've tried using the Google 'What Song Is This' feature and only came up with the Knife Game Song and We're Going to Kentucky but neither of those seem exactly right! I've asked a couple of friends this and they're all experiencing the same thing, does anybody else recognize where this tune could have come from??

The song is the third track on 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Boomin's collaborative studio album Without Warning, which was released in October 2017.[12] It was ranked the 44th best song of 2017 by Complex Media.[13] It was the 10th most streamed track of 2018 on Apple Music.[14]

On February 4, 2018, the track was certified platinum before even being released as a single, marking Offset's first platinum song as a lead artist. Almost half a year after its initial release, the song peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, following months of gradual ascension from its number 71 debut.[15] The song ultimately spent 31 total weeks on the Hot 100, and was ranked number 38th on Billboard's annual year end chart for 2018.[16][17] It has since been certified 6 platinum by the RIAA,[18] and is both the best-selling, and highest-charting song from any solo Migos member as a lead artist.[citation needed]

In late February 2018, Ric Flair posted a photo to his personal Twitter account of himself and Offset in sequin robes reminiscent of those famously worn by Flair during his WWE career, suggesting that a music video was in the works.[19] A music video was released a week later on March 1, and was directed by Bengali-American director Shomi Patwary. It was published on 21 Savage's official Vevo channel despite him not being present on the audio of the song.

The visual primarily takes place in a luxury mansion and features appearances from song namesake Ric Flair, fellow Migos members Quavo and Takeoff as well as album-mates, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin.[20][21][22] Patwary described the video's flagrant portrayal of opulence as a parody of the "outlandish" nature of many contemporary hip-hop music videos.[23] The audio cuts midway for an interlude in which Flair delivers his signature "Limousine-Ridin', Jet-Flyin' Son of a Gun" WWE monologue.[24] Throughout the video, Offset can be seen wearing a chain based on Ric Flair's likeness. The $70,000 medallion was originally gifted to Offset by Quality Control Music CEO Pierre "Pee" Thomas for his 26th birthday, and was approved by Ric Flair himself.[25]

Ric Flair selected the song for the WWE 2K19 soundtrack,[29] and has used the track as his personal ringtone,[30] as well as entrance music for his own wedding.[31] Various "Ric Flair Drip"-inspired t-shirts and sweatshirts depicting lyrics were also made available for purchase on Ric Flair's official online merchandise shop.[32]
