Download active fire products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (MCD14DL) and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) 375 m (VNP14IMGTDL_NRT and VJ114IMGTDL_NRT) for the last 24 and 48 hours and for the last 7 days in shapefile, KML, WMS, or text file formats. Data older than seven days can be obtained using the Archive Download Tool. NRT data are replaced with data extracted from the standard MODIS and VIIRS active fire products. Users intending to perform scientific analysis are advised to download the standard (science quality) data.

February 2022: 

Work has continued over the past year to improve Version 2 of the Fire INventory from NCAR (FINN2) and emissions files for version 2.5 for 2002-2021 are available here. This version will be documented in an upcoming publication (Wiedinmyer et al., 2022). FINNv2.5 addresses issues we identified with grassland fire emissions in FINNv2.4. 

Emissions are provided for several common VOC speciations (MOZART-T1, GEOS-Chem and SAPRC99). FINNv2 is based on fire counts detected by MODIS and VIIRS satellite instruments, and has improvements in the estimation of fire size and burned area, as well as fuel loadings, over FINNv1 and FINNv1.5. Emission factors and mapping of the VOCs to the MOZART-T1 mechanism have also been updated. Emissions from MODIS-only fires are available for 2002-2021, and from MODIS+VIIRS fires for 2012-2021. 

When using FINN2, please make sure that you include the version, date of download, and whether you apply the MODIS-only or MODIS+VIIRS version in your description of the emissions.

Gridded (0.1x0.1 degree) emissions files will be available soon from theUCAR Geoscience Data Exchange. Emissions for 2021 will be available after finalized MODIS and VIIRS fire detections are made available.

Issues with the FINNv1.6 files (allowed for download from this site in December 2017) were discovered recently, and it is recommended that these files are NOT used.As of April 20, 2018, the FINNv1.5 files are available to download now.

Maps that have been digitized and placed on the Library's website are in the public domain and can be downloaded directly to a computer or flash drive. If you look underneath the thumbnail image in the individual catalog record, you will see a download menu with various scans available to download at no cost. The TIFF file is the highest resolution scan.

Depending on the age of your computer and default programs, it can be difficult to download TIFF files without a TIFF viewer. A search of the internet will provide links to many free TIFF viewers. The Library of Congress uses Irfanview on its computers for this purpose.

The Geography and Map Division is beginning a series of Jupyter Notebooks exploring how to computationally access, retrieve, and analyze cartographic materials in the digitized collections. These notebooks include instructions and demonstration Python code that lead you through the process of downloading and analyzing images and metadata in bulk from the Library's website, specifically geared towards maps. These notebooks are designed to be downloaded to your computer and opened with Jupyter Notebook, an open-source web application that allows you to create and share documents that contain live code, equations, visualizations and narrative text.

ADB is available on your computer when you install Android Studio. If you don't already have Android Studio, download and install Android Studio. If you're not using Android Studio, you need to download and install Android SDK platform tools.

The MODIS burned area product is available for download in either HDF, GeoTIFF, or Shapefile format from the University of Maryland s server.

For downloading the product files, you can use your current web browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, or the command-line ftp and lftp utilities. For those desiring more flexibility, we recommend using special FTP software when downloading large amounts of data. You can use freely available software such as FileZillaClient3 or SmartFTP4 , both of which allow you to schedule the download to start at a later time.

 The Enterprise Data Warehouse Team tested exporting out to KML/KMZ files as a deliverable and due to the complexity and size of the datasets this has been unsuccessful. To obtain a KML file for any EDW dataset, go to the Geospatial Data Discovery Tool and search for the dataset. An option to download to KML is available from that website. The threat zone estimates are shown on a grid in ALOHA, and they can also be plotted on maps in MARPLOT (Mapping Application for Response, Planning, and Local Operational Tasks), Esri's ArcMap, Google Earth, and Google Maps.
